I believe it.
Cliff Floyd is made of glass.
I've never seen someone more prone to stupid injuries. He injured himself tonight, jogging into 3rd base. He was just walking along and his ankle just gave out. Ow. Also up for the "Glass" award.. Ken Griffey Jr. |
Hey now don't be jinxing my JR...... the REDS are on a very RED-HOT streak right now and don't need JR hurt.
|
How about the trio of Burnett, Prior, and Wood? Those guys are never healthy.
|
I think it's more in the way players train today than anything else. All the weight lifting and focusing on muscles and being in shape is good but there is a point when you can do too much in one area and hurt the rest of your body.
|
It's funny, back in the day, pitchers' schedules were not as rigid as they are now. They didn't have the same pitch counts, and they threw more innings. How did these guys work 300 innings/season and not blow out their arms?
Guys were throwing the same types of pitches, were they just not throwing as hard? |
I don't know. Today, a complete game is so rare, but back in the day, players would pitch up to 150 pitches.
I think someone hinted at one reason in another thread -- steroids break down the body as much as they built it up. |

But look at guys like Prior and Wood. Ever since the 03 season when Dusty used them deep in games, with high pitch counts, time and time again, they've been hurt, or underwhelming. I have a hunch that Prior is just afraid to pitch with a sore arm. But Wood is a gamer. I think it seriously just tore up his arm. But what do I know? :D BTW - Not a Cubs' fan, actually a ChiSox fan. |

Wood and Prior's careers were ruined by the man known as Dusty Baker. In 2003 throwing 100+ pitches, sometimes on 3 days rest. Jim Rome had Steve Stone on in the summer of 2004 and Steve Stone hit it right on the head. He said these 2 possibly great careers would be a farce after the 2003 NLCS. He called it. |
