Bill Clinton to slam Limbaugh, O'Reilly
Former president hits talkers for not criticizing reality shows on Fox

Former President Bill Clinton will take a shot at top-rated talk-show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly this weekend on his "60 Minutes" debate segment with former Sen. Bob Dole, reports World magazine.

According to a transcript of the previously taped segment obtained by the magazine, Clinton hammers the hosts for not criticizing the Fox TV network for airing what Dole calls "degrading" reality programs.

Addressing Dole, Clinton says, "Fox, the network full of conservative Republicans, has reality shows. You and Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh haven't attacked them."

Clinton is responding to Dole's criticism of "The Osbournes" and other television programming.

Bill O'Reilly hosts the cable news show "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News Channel. Rush Limbaugh is longtime host of his own widely popular talk-radio program.

Clinton and Dole agreed in March to tape 10 debate segments for the popular Sunday show on CBS.

Here is a transcript of the exchange:

BOB DOLE: Does Hollywood still think Ozzy Osbourne is funny now that he's shipped his underage son off to drug rehab? America is awash in reality TV. The reality is it's debasing and degrading.
Mr. President, don't your show biz pals realize the consequences? They package dysfunctional people like the Osbournes, giggle at the coarseness and the crimes, and sink lower for higher rating. For eight years you treated Hollywood like your own piggy bank. Now how about joining me in demanding a little responsibility? Ask those entertainment executives who wrote you those big, big checks: Isn't there some way to reach the most viewers without appealing to the worst in viewers?

Reality exacts a price – sadly, from Ozzy's son today. Maybe from other kids tomorrow. President Clinton, how low can things go?

BILL CLINTON: I've never watched "The Osbournes," but 10 years ago did challenge the entertainment industry to take violence and other things harmful to kids out of their programming. I pushed for the first TV ratings system and the V chip to give parents more control over what their kids watched.

Reality TV makes money because adults watch it. Fox, the network full of conservative Republicans, has reality shows. You and Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh haven't attacked them.

As for kids and drugs, the Republican budget gives a tax cut to you and me paid for by cutting $50 million (each) from the Safe and Drug Free School Program and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and worst of all by taking half a million kids out of after-school programs, which we know helps kids stay off the streets and away from drugs.

The administration's budget will hurt our efforts to keep kids drug free a lot more than "The Osbournes." That's reality.

First of all, Dole is so fucking dumb he's still calling Clinton the president. Second, reality TV is not a problem. TV isn't a problem period. I bet you couldn't find someone who watched more killing and fucking on TV than me while I was growing up. I never did drugs and I never got in trouble, and that fact remains even now that I'm 26. Why is it that all these liberals want to blame Hollywood for kids problems? Parents have to teach kids the difference between what's right and wrong and take a little responsibility for the environment that their kids are raised in. Kids wouldn't need afterschool programs if their parents gave a fuck about them and spent time with them. Lastly, why the fuck do people still listen to what Clinton has to say? He's not the president, he's a lying fuck. I'm suppose to listen to a man talking about what's morally wrong about Hollywood when this stupid ass cheats on his wife and then lied to them and all of the American people? Wait, I know why he did it. He's a weak fuck and Hollywood made him do it!

I was always told that Presidents are never "ex-Presidents", out of respect for the office when you're referring to them in an official manner. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I disagree with Dole's criticism of TV. Society is the way it is because parents are becoming more lax in discipline and have less time overall to spend with their children, for one reason. There are many contributing factors to the way society is today. But really, society has been the same throughout most of history, in terms of sex and drugs, it's only more visible today.

The fact that Dole didn't criticize Fox for its reality shows is unimportant. He only brought up one show, the Osbournes. It may have been different if he had brought up shows from many different networks, and still ignored Fox. I haven't paid much attention to the reality show scene lately, but if I remember correctly, Fox's reality shows are no worse than the other crud coming from other networks.

I feel that Dole had no political reasons behind not bringing up Fox's reality shows, but that Clinton did, in insinuating that Dole was trying to protect his "conservative" friends at Fox. It should have been a moot point, in my opinion.

frenik is right. Ford, Carter, etc. are all "President" out repect for the position. It's going to make it confusing after Bush is out of the office at family reunions. Unless we all get to use "41" and "43".

As usual, I completely agree with sixate.

My experience has been that this is a bigger issue for the Republicans than the Democrats. That's why Dole started the conversation. Clinton did all the "v" chip crap, because he was so adept at stealing the Republicans issues and making them his own. He was Slick W illie, you know.

I imagine Hollywood will stop giving Democrats money when the Kenneth Lays of the world stop giving money to the Republicans.

Why do people ask this? Did you not get any sense of what drives the man during the 8 years he was in office? Attention, power, desire to influence, etc. Plus, he's young! If he got out of office at 75, he might be behaving differently.

And why does Dole not go quietly into the night? Isn't it the same?

Dole wasn't a President he was a Senator.

yes, i know that what drives Pres. Clinton. It had been customary prior to Mr. Clinton for past presidents to not comment nor "take spotlight" away from current administration. He's annoying that's all, His wife as well, but that's a whle different thread.

Clinton will never go quietly anywhere - he would probably prefer to be preceded by "Hail to the Chief" before entering the bathroom. I know Bob Dole personally. He's really a great guy but he too has a bit of the "hey look at me" still going. This will probably last until they close the box and cover it with dirt. We create these people by the heights we allow them to rise to in politics and few if any ever go quietly into the night. Bob Dole's personna has been enhanced through the years by TV using him for various things and they still are giving him constant exposure. The prominence that his wife has achieved also keeos him in the spotlight. Between the two (Clinton/Dole) Bob has a much better taste in women.
