Standing on the delegate floor watching palin talk. Speech isn't doing it for me. Maybe because the veep candidate for the party of morals has so many moral and ethical issues. Believe it or not you guys probably hear it better'n me - these delegates sure are loud
so what do you guys think? did her speech win you over? was she a good pick? |

She certainly speaks well and is no shrinking violet.
Hopefully the debates can now move beyond personality and onto the issues. I know we'll have to work through the post-convention glow but fingers crossed anyways.

I have issues with both parties, but it seems like she only cares about energy, guns, taxes and abortion. Well, she may not say a whole lot about the last one, but the party members are.
I'll wait until the debates to make up my mind. But I need to know if Palin will be like McCain if she becomes President, or if she will become some right-wing extremist. And the "Drill baby drill" thing isn't going to win over too many voters. This is what I envision ANWR and everywhere else looking like under a administration that will allow the oil addicts to do anything to get more oil: Last edited by ASU2003; 09-03-2008 at 07:59 PM.. |

How cool is that? Live from the floor! TFP at the RNC!
I haven't seen the footage of the speech yet but from what I've read, the chants of Drill Baby Drill and negative attacks on Obama are not going to stand them well. That kind of negativity is bad for anyone who uses it.

The speech didn't really do anything for me, either. I think that if you were already predisposed to like Palin, you probably thought it was a good or a great speech. Otherwise, I'm guessing it didn't really change your mind. I live-blogged it on facebook; if people are interested, I can cross-post it here.

It seems to me that some women need to overcompensate to prove themselves strong.
Her relentless Obama-bashing was a little overdone for my taste.

Oh please. When they've got nothing to say, it's the only thing they can resort to.

I'm not trying to be combative, but respectively what are they resorting to saying? I'm afraid that Obama's veneer of style over substance is thinning away and his followers are having a rude awakening as to who they really nominated.

Aren't McCain's exhibiting the same veneer (instead of style, theirs is heroism and tenacity) at the Convention?
For me, the DNC and RNC are nothing more than infomercials and political pep rallies which, I guess, is their intention. I haven't learned anything important about anyone other than how well they can speak. I so look forward to the debates, when we'll see who's truly got substance.

Clearly you heard a different speech from Obama than I did. I thought he said exactly the sorts of things I would like to hear from a politician. The sorts of things that I am hearing from the RNC are having just the opposite effect.

Well, now that I've had a chance to hole up in my hotel room and sleep for more than 5 minutes, and I have a transcript of her speech in front of me, I can say. .. Her speech still doesn't do anything for me. Not only was it full of vitriol (which is not surprising for a party who's attendees were wearing shirts saying "No BO - Biden Obama - Say No to Stinky Politics") (which struck me as being SO adult ) but it was also full of, to bastardize a phrase, lies, damn lies, and republicanisms. A friend to special needs children? Then why in the 06, 07, and 08 budgets did she cumulatively cut funding for special needs children by over 60%? Opposed to the bridge to nowhere? Then why did she in her campaign say she supported the bridge and wanted Alaska to hurry up and start the project so they could get federal money for it?
There are lots more, but others have already done the writing for me, and I'm too tired to write it out myself Oh, but Otto. . . I'm not sure what you mean by style over substance, unless it's a commentary that Obama can, unlike our current president, string more than 7 words together without stumbling or inventing a new one. Obama's been discussing the issues. Economy, war, healthcare, etc. The republicans have been rather too busy bashing Obama to give us their views on such things. |

i watched some pf the palin show, but decided that it was more stupid than project runway, so decided to watch that instead. i don't understand what's happened to me. i would have looked for you, shakran, but i wouldn't have known who to look for, and the idea of staring intently at shots of a crowd of republicans was not pleasant.
what is saw--and what i read today--made it clear that she's not a candidate who would have any appeal outside the rightwing populist base of the republican party. and the outline of her arguments, such as they were, conformed to the tidbits provided the other day by mc-cain's campaign manager concerning their strategy--not about issues, but about personalities, image---so ((i'll write this again)) what the republicans want is to make this a contest of political machine as over against political machine. they're betting that as obama's campaign drifts center and more onto television, the momentum he was able to generate in galvanizing new voters will dissipate. i think the election is obama's to loose. one thing that palin's speech made REALLY clear to me is that i hope his campaign does not fuck up and loose it. because machine vs machine, it could easily happen. ============= drill baby drill petro-inferno drill baby drill tear that mother out. o yeah. great slogan.
