have YOU ever encountered a ghost?
not has some guy you saw on tv that you believe is 100% trustworthy, not the best friend of your neighbor's sister's cousin twice removed on her father's side. have you?either just a sighting or an actual interaction (conversation or touch).
my first experience with ghosts was actually a mistake on my part (and everyone thought i was insane when i first told them). at the time, i lived with my husband, my dog, my best friend and her two young children (a boy and a girl). i was sitting in the living room watching tv and happened to notice some movement on the stairs out of the corner of my eye. i looked over and saw the kids playing on the stairs. it was late so i yelled up at them (from my chair) to go back to bed. i thought nothing of it until a few minutes later when i remembered that the kids were out of town with their mother. i wasn't scared, but i was a little freaked out by it. i told my husband and my best friend about it, but neither of them believed me. in fact, they made fun of me for a couple of weeks, till they started having ghostly encounters of their own. i've had a few others (all while living in that house) but that was my first. just curious what kinds of experiences other people have had. |

when i got back to the hallway the figure was gone. |

One time I encountered what I took to be the spirit of my family's dead dog. It was pretty trippy. I was in my bedroom looking out the window at night when I saw him trotting up the sidewalk. I called his name and he turned to look at me for a moment, then continued up the street. There was no way he could have heard me, the window was closed and I was on the second floor. And it wsn't just some other dog, it was my dog, who died because of my negligence many years ago.

I used to work at a movie theater many years ago that was supposedly haunted. A lot of strange things happened there, including my hubby hearing footsteps behind him when no one was in the theater but me (I was upstairs, he was downstairs in one of the hallways beside the screen). The theater was old and had one very large screen with two hallways on each side of the screen. The hallways were curved. The airconditioner was located behind the screen and I had gone back there to turn it on. The side it was on didn't have a working light, so I went back there in the semi dark (the movie screen somewhat illuminated the area). As I was walking back to the theater itself, I came around the bend and saw the upper half of a shadowy figure walking towards me. It seemed to be male due to the height. I don't think many people believed me and thought I was just seeing things, but I know what I saw. I screamed and ran right through it and ran, still screaming, through the theater and into the lobby. I never went down that hallway by myself ever again.

At the college I went to we had a Theatre ghost. Everyone who spent any time in the theatre at night knew what they could expect. As many of you may or may not know most significant work in a theatre gets done late at night, with the buiding of sets and setting up of lights, costume design so on and so forth. Many times late at night we would have lights turn on and off by themselves. Tools would just vanish, only to be found somewhere completely bizarre, doors would be open, that had been closed minutes earlier. Most of these things happened when you were alone, so it became really difficult to pass it off as a prank or coincidence. We never actually "saw" a ghost, but there were definately some wierd things going on in that place. Nothing sinister, apparently our theatre spirit was good natured.

I used to go to a summer camp that had a ghost of a girl that had died falling down a waterfall on the camp property. The story goes that she wanders the area around it (most of the camp), but is more of a protector type ghost than malicious. The story went that she was 'felt' especially strong in the outdoor chapel in the woods that is at most 50 yards from the falls. The chapel consists of a small alter and pulpit (sp?) in front made out of stone, with rows of wooden benches up to the entrance with a main aisle in the middle. The whole thing is surrounded by a wooden fence. There aren't any lights in chapel itself, but with the light from other parts of the camp close by over a ridge and the stars you can see pretty well at night (its not pitch black, you can easily see the fence and benches when you are in it at night). One night we decided to sit out and see if we would see or 'feel' anything. We waited til after midnight and a group of about 10 of us went down the chapel and sat on one of the rows of benches about halfway down the aisle. Lucky me, I got the one on the end next to the main aisle. We waited about 10 minutes with our flashlights off, and suddenly it started getting cold. It was August in Ohio and already late at night, and this was a definite change. Everyone got that hair on the back of the neck standing up feeling. Then, at the top of the main aisle we heard a sound like someone walking down towards us (the path was gravel, kind of a light crunching sound like someone small walking on it). It came right down the aisle right by us (it got a lot colder for a moment when it was closest) and stopped at the alter. We waited about 10 more minutes and nothing happened so we went back out of the chapel. Once we cleared the woods out into the clearing outside the chapel entrance it was warm again. Nothing too spooky, but definitely a big we're-not-in-kansas-anymore-toto feeling.

Was this a ghost?
When I was in high school, I used to baby sit for this family that lived in this big old house, set quite far back from the road. The house had three stories, and the third floor was a playroom for the girls. One night I was babysitting, and I had put the girls to bed (they were 4 and 7 I think) and was downstairs watching television, doing homework. I went upstairs to check on them (because that's what a good babysitter does ![]() I went upstairs, and the light was on, and all the toys were out on the floor. Window was closed and locked, there were no closets in the room, just an old couch and some chairs. NO idea what caused the noise, I put all the toys away (Which I swore I did before) turned out the light, and went back downstairs. Bout an hour later, I checked on the girls again, and saw light coming from the third floor, I went back upstairs again (I was a brave teenager, who apparently didn't see enough horror movies) and the lights were on again, and all the toys were out again. Now, officially creeped out, I put all the toys away again, turned out the light, and sat on the second floor stairs, with a wiffle ball bat, for the rest of the night. I mentioned it to the parents when they got home, they got very quiet, and said that it has happened before. NO explainations.... I never babysat for them again. They moved about 6 months later.

This could be as much psychological as real; but maybe many "ghosts" are:
We had a cat die of cancer, an old calico. It was my wife's cat but I liked her a lot, and she grew to like me. My wife was sick, so I did much of the nursing of the cat for the last month or so and grew very close to her, and her to me. I knew she was dying, and gave her lots of quality time. She finally gives up the ghost. A couple of weeks later, I'm waking up in the morning and I hear the cat yowling and running back and forth along the bed on my wife's side, as was her custom when she wanted to be fed. I raised up on my elbows, and there she was -- but young again, and very slightly transparent. At that point a voice popped into my head -- my wife's voice, although she was sound asleep beside me. The voice said, very clearly, "She came back because she loves us." I felt a real moment of peace at that point. Then the cat was gone, although I liked to think that I could feel her presence around for a few months afterward. It might be psychology; might be the half-awake dream state in action. Might be a combination of both. Might have been a ghost. Who knows? |

I teach a martial arts class in our city's old armory. One day before class, by fiance saw a man hanging from the ceiling (as in suicide) in one of the bathrooms. He was there for a split second and then vanished.
About 2 months later, while I was teaching I looked to my left and observed a man walking past me in an adjacent hallway. He turned and looked at me and as he looked forward again, he vanished. He was semi-transparent and completely transparent below the thighs. I just stood and stared at him walking by. One of the students commented, "You see a ghost?" I responded, "I think so." When I got home, I told my fiance about the encounter. When we swapped descriptions, it was the same man. Middle-aged man, very pale skin and dark hair, black glasses and wearing a blue janitor like jumpsuit. When I quit teaching there, I plan on asking my employer (the city) about the building. Until then, I don't want them thinking their instructor is nuts. |

My wife related this story from her childhood. Her and her sister were in their early teens; one day they both stayed home from school. Not long after the bus had left (they lived in the country) and they were watching TV, suddenly the front door opened and closed on its own; that is no visible person was there. They could hear the sound of footsteps walking across the floor and into another room but still could not see any thing. Almost immediately, whatever it was, retraced its steps and once again the front door opened and closed on its own. They were so frightened they called their uncle to come and take them to school. To this day, they both swear the story is true as I've described it.

I've never actually seen a ghost, but I sure have felt a presence. I remember looking for houses with my parents one time. The realtor drove us around a few properties and we got to a house, went inside and started walking around.
I started going into one of the rooms by myself and literally got pushed right back out. I walked my ass right back outside. With in a couple of minutes my Mom and My sister joined me. They both felt the same presence I did. My dad didn’t feel a thing and thought we were all crazy. Needless to say we ruled that house right out.

anybody messed around with an ouija board i would say has encountered a ghost...
i used one once in college with some friends at a party away from the action in a quiet room... it started out kinda fun until i realized that neither of us touching it was controlling what it was doing it was very creepy - the 'spirit' we were 'communicating' with was way to converstional for us to be controlling the answers it scared the shit out of me & I had terrible nightmares afterwards - i would never use one again anybody else have ouija board stories?

I Really don't know if this was a ghost, but it’s the only name for the experience I've had
I was staying at my sister’s house in DC, It was about10:30 at night. And everyone was in bed but me. I was downstairs watching TV. I got up to fix a snack. I was in the kitchen (which faced the living room) when I looked up for a second. To see an outline of a large dark cat lying on top of the couch, looking at me right at me. Its eyes reflecting the light in the kitchen (the only light on in the house at the time). I have two cats at home, and my sister and I where raised around them, so I didn't think anything about it at first. And went back to fixing my sandwich. The I remember that she didn't have any cats or any other pets for that matter. I looked back up. And the figure was gone. But there was an impression on couch pillow where it was. My sister says that she hasn't seen anything, But she has uneasy feelings in that room before.

I have never actually seen a ghost, but I have heard things that were very hard to explain. I used to live in this back house that used to be a garage. It was a small place, but it suited my needs at the time. The owner lived in the house up front by himself. Every night as I laid in bed trying to fall asleep, I would hear a tapping at the window right next to my bed. I would get up to look out the window, but no one would be there. After laying back down, I would here the tapping again. I finally got up and went outside. I searched the whole backyard, but found no one. I went back inside to go to sleep, but as soon as I pulled the covers over me, "tap tap tap". I got up again and went to the front house and explained to the owner what was happening. Together we searched the whole property, but found no one.
The next night I was woken up by the noise of someone walking back and forth from the front house to the backyard, opening and closing the gate. It sounded as though someone was dragging something, and remembering grunting noises as thought someone was straining from carrying something heavy. I fell asleep thinking was the owner just moving stuff to the shed in the back. That morning I found the owner and said I would have helped him moving his stuff last night, but that I was dead tired. The owner just stared at me confused. He said he didn't know what I was talking about. He had been gone all night, as he spent the evening at his brother's house and hadn't got back till right now. We immeaditly thought that someone had broken into his house, but after searching his house we found nothing missing. The tapping and sound of someone dragging something from the front house to back continued night after night. It finally got so bad that I just had to move. |

i have had a few experiance, mainly from my younger childhood, the first one to go, was my mother and i were sleeping in a twin sized bed on my aunts farm, it was right after my parents split and my mom was really needing a place to stay. Next to the bed was a window. Well, i heard some noises inside the house and i was like what in the world, so i sat up and my mom was sleeping, and i was like its probably just my aunt getting a glass or water or something. I layed back down but as i was laying down i glanced out the window which didn't have a curtain, and i saw this white figure standing in the yard, kinda creeped me out, so i was like wow. I woke up my mom and told her of my sighting and she turned white, then told me it was nothing and made me go back to sleep, later after we left my aunts house, my mom told me of how she used to see that lady all the time when she stayed the night there, and how she had gone to meet the lady but the lady never stayed long enough to talk...and she also mentioned that she would see puddles of blood at the bottom of the stairs, needless to say i don't like going there anymore. well later on, my aunt ended up moving for financial reasons and so forth. by this time i have a little sister and a dad, well we all go to my aunts new house and i am sleeping in my cousins room, and my parents are in my aunts big bed with my sister all laying with their heads at the top of the bed, well i woke up in the middle of the night and got a bad feeling and so i decided to lay back down and hope the feeling went away, then i dozed off and as i did i woke up to hearing a crash like glass shattering, so i was like ah i bet my uncle went to get a glass of water and dropped the glass, so i went back to sleep, well inleast tried to, then i heard this really loud scream and my mom yelling to my dad to call 911, and i jumped up and no one would let me see what happened, to find out a saucer (the ones you set a coffee cup on) was broke on my moms face in her sleep, later to find out, my mom had woke up earlier that evening and got a bad feeling and moved my sister from next to her to the foot of the bed, and went back to sleep before the fixture fell on her head, also a few weeks later at my aunts house i was sitting in the living room with my cousin watching the color purple when all the plates in the cabinents flew out, they didn't fall out, they all flew out, that was freaky, i've never stayed there since

I saw a creature... something that hovered outside my window one night. I saw it only because of a dream I had a some time before it where a man gave me a startling message.

That kind of sounds like the mothman. I'm not too sure though, as I don't know very much about story that goes along with mothmen. I do know that they come to people with warnings about the future and taht they appear humanlike, but have wings that allow them to fly. A movie was made about them starring Richard Gere. Maybe someone around here might know about them though. |

I worked in an old pub, that used to be a court house. I use to dance around, and whenever I did that , I always thought someone was behind me, but there never was.
On my last night of work there, when I was locking up for the last time, I felt like.... it was like someone was yelling at me, without the yelling. You could pass it off on nerves , I guess, but I felt a presence. |

well, i have always had my suspicions about my house, when im home alone...of course, my bedroom door will slam shut, seems explainable by a breeze or something else but my door opens by pushin in so there couldnt be a breeze from my room and my door is a bitch to open and close. Then i was chillin watchin some tv with i think my mom maybe, and we heard somethin break upstairs, i went upstairs to check it out and couldnt find anything, a week or so later i was movin stuff out of my room and found that my window by my bed had been shattered out from the inside, completely shattered out. That when i really started to believe it. Then not too long ago i got up to go to the bathroom and stood about 5 feet from a figure, completely white, not glowy like most ghosts people see, just distinctly white. I was thoroughly freaked after that encounter.

Ok, there's a lot here about people seeing ghosts. this is rather timely because just last night my hubby and I were postulating about what exactly is a ghost.
Aside from seeing ghosts, can anybody articulate just what exactly a ghost is? In our discussion, we started to differentiate between spirits, ghosts and latent memory. My hubby said that if ghosts are the thoughts of people who have died, but don't realize it, (a la 6th sense) then how do the memories retain their integrity? because memory is linked to neural/chemical processes in the physical brain. Once a person dies, the physical connection is severed, therefore ghosts cannot exists. I countered that ghosts are in fact spirits, which means that they are much more than mere memories. But if that is the case, why again can they be manifested in our presence? any ideas anybody? Perhaps there is another thread that this question should be in, but I didn't want to split it out of this discussion. |

Well, when I was young living in this 100+ year old house that had at least one person die while insane in it, and a couple of others go the cancer death at home route, I would hear people having a dinner party and playing the old radio and stuff. I was always home alone when this happened and I got into the habit of closing my attic bedroom door and playing my albums and reading a very interesting book. That showed them! Inconsiderate spectres!

I believe in them but don't think I'm sensitive enough to see them. The only time something's happened when I was around was when I was with a buddy of mine who sees and hears things all the time. He's not the type that believes anything without seeing it either- he's a no-bullshit type of guy. However, it turns out that he's sensitive to alot of unexplainable things. Which is funny, because he gets really freaked out because of it. Anyways...
He and I were over at his grandfathers house. His grandmother had passed away, and he had had numerous encounters of feeling her presence (feeling a certain way, smelling her perfume, etc.). Well, his grandfather was out of town, and we went over to have a few beers and chill in his hot tub. The house was closed up and dark, and there wasn't a need to go inside, we just went around back. We sat in the tub, just relaxing and talking. Everything was fine for about a half an hour or so, and then we looked up at the house and a light INSIDE had been turned on (celing light- not one on a timer). Well, we got a little spooked. We decided to wrap it up and head back to the car. We walked a little faster than normal, got to the front driveway where his car was, and I looked at the front window, to see one part of the blinds open. Remember, his grandfather was out of town- and the blinds had been completely drawn when we pulled up. And it felt like someone was watching us. We flipped out, got in his car, and took off. Turns out, his grandmother had pretty much hated his grandfather, and nothing ever happened when his grandfather was around- only when he was alone (or apparently with me :-( ) I haven't thought about that in years- and when I remembered the part about the blinds I got chills until I was done typing it. I know, it's not as dramatic as some- but when you've never before and never since encountered something like that, it's pretty freaky.

Of course I have. Ghosts are everywhere. A few "lived" in the basement of my childhood house, they were all real pissers. I think they had been killed in bad ways, cause they were always mad that me and my family were alive and they weren't. Now I have one that "lives" in my office space where I am currently sitting. If it doesn't want to go to sleep when we do, It moves the mouse to turn the computer on from stand-by mode; it's even turned the light on in the office when we ignore the computer. My wife and I think it's a kid, cause it kinda throws a tantrum when we don't pay attention.

My dad is a computer geek so he's always on the computer in the basement. Everytime he gets up for a cup of coffee and you are in the living room you can here his chair scrape across the floor. I would always hear his chair even if I was in the house alone or he had already gone to bed. It was just one of those psychological things - I expected to hear it every so often and so I did. It was more than a little freaky when I was younger - though.

i live in a house build in 1903, so it has its fair share of history.. i've never actually seen anything, but sometimes in various places in the house the hair on my neck will stand on end, and i'll get invisible sound barriers quite frequently.. as if somebody had walked between me and the television, how you can definetly tell theres somebody there just by that alone.. very bizarre, but never uncomfortable

Waaaaah, I don't like this thread very much, but I can't stop reading it!! Never had ghostly experiences myself, but my highly superstitious mother swears by them (just realized she's also experienced an Old Hag, but neither of us knew what those were). I can credit a lot of these stories to psychological stuff (at least to make myself feel better), but the stuff that really gets me is when some of you have seen ghosts of people you'd never met before, who obviously exist in and of themselves.
But why the cliches?... that's where my social scientist side steps up... women in wedding dresses, people carrying heavy burdens, little kids... it's sorta like aliens. If ghosts exist, why do they all look/act like the ghosts we see in the movies?

When I was 15 I was dating a girl whose boyfriend had died a few months earlier. Poor kid dropped dead of an aneurysm in gym class. Anyhow, she used to talk to him from time to time, which was a little odd, but didn't bother me terribly. One afternoon her parents went out and we were fooling around on the couch and the television started turning on and off repeatedly. The remote was on top of the TV - nowhere near where we were rolling around. She yelled at him to stop. Not sure it was his ghost, but it was frickin weird.

Brief backstory.
When my parents got married they moved in with my mom's parents. My father's parents lived right across the street over a bridge. When my sister and I was born, we were looking for another, bigger place to live at since we were still living with my grandparents. My dad's father liked never liked my mom's side of the family and denied our presence in their house (they had two extra rooms that were empty). The only person he liked from mom's side of the family was me. When he died, we moved across the street to live my dad's mother. I guess all the negative feelings that he's had for us, acumulated in the house overtime. Not to mention it wasn't a very friendly family. Oftentimes, at night, when my sister and I would be getting ready for bed noises similar to a chair being dragged accross the floor would be heard in our room. It was pretty loud, and would be scary if my mother hadn't told us that it was the neighbors moving furniture around. That lasted for as long as we lived there and could happen anywhere from once every day to once every few months. Things would dissapear and then reappear a few days later in the same place where we would last see them. Dad's father left me his watch before he died and specifically instructed that they were meant only for me. When I put on the watch, everything is fine. When my dad tried it wear it a few times, he got severe headaches and felt lightheaded until he took them off. Right now the watch is in my drawer. Creepy stuff.
