What exactly does hearing voices in your head sound like?
Last week or so I kinda down. Not feeling well, but not really sick. I'd go to bed and it was like every sound was amplified. Every now and again I'd hear what sounded like a friend scream my name into my head. It was really loud, but it didn't effect my ears like a real noise would.. Anyway, it got me thinking how a schizophrenic hears voices. Do they converse with the person, or are the voices Quick bursts of noise in their head that they just interpret to be words?
Sorry if this post is slighty incoherent I am sleepy..

I've only ever heard them like you, when sleeping (usually in sleep paralysis). Very bizarre to say the least, and very realistic - hearing them as vividly in full conciousness would be an experience indeed.

I remember as a little kid, about 4 or 5 years old, walking down the street to a friends house. I very clearly heard my mother calling my name, but inside my head, not through my ears. I turned around and ran home, but she was at work. Strange thing that I still think about 25 years later...

Check out this National Public Radio link. There's a schizophrenia simulator that is supposed to be incredibly accurate. I'm lucky enough not to have had these symptoms, so I can't compare it to anything.

My brother had this a year or so ago. Our granfather died and he had troubles with his job and gf.
He heard me calling his name several times but I wasn't. This lasted for a few weeks and never happened again.

The best way to explain it is the way that you say words in your head as you type messages on the computer but imagine you not saying it in your head. It's like a little mouth is in there pushing words into your consciousness.
I know it's sounds crazy but I guess it does because it is |

There are times where I can hear things in my head that are real sounds, but aren't happening. You know, like you can imagine hearing them, but its really random and I can like, HEAR them. I dunno why, but like most said, its usually as im falling asleep or right when I wake up from a dream. Its pretty weird, but I think its pretty cool.

I've heard voices ONCE and only once. Hard to describe, but i distinctly heard another voice in my noggin that wasn't on my own. I mean even when you think.. there is still a "voice" there. I didn't hear that 'voice' and it freaked me out, as it told me to do something I would never do. The voice was trying to tell me to commit an act of murder on my english teacher. Yeah sounds funny, but it still said what it said. It didn't quite end there, I also was "drawing" (in quote cause i suck at drawing) pictures of ways for her to die. Truely evil experience.
Thing is, I've had songs in my head.. and they weren't voices singing the song.. I was just simply "playing" the song in my head.

I heard something on npr recently that said it would go something like this.
The person would be in a grocery store and it would sound like a person was on the intercom saying "Everyone's looking at you. They all hate you. They all think you're fat." etc. etc. |

Sometimes.. really late at night.. i hear dueling banjos playing in my head
But seriously.. if it's just a one-time thing i dont think you have much to worry about. It could just be your subconscious playing tricks on you. Sounds like you were a little depressed and maybe stressed and also tired, that combinaton can be hard on your mind/body. Strange stuff happening under these circumstances wouldn't be unheard of. Taking a day off for a small relaxing vacation can work wonders.

I went to the NPR site, and hit the play command. My media player indicated that it was playing, but, there wasn't any sound or voices. So, I guess, if it's like the Emperor Who Has No Clothes, whatever voices I was hearing in my head were for real.

Take two hits of acid and call me in the morning...
But seriously, I've had friends who when they weren't on their medication -could carry on imaginary conversations with people who weren't there. I shouldn't name any names but *cough* Doug *cough* comes to mind. It certainly makes one happy that hearing voices isn't on my permanent disability list. It's basically hearing voices in your head, as loud as your thoughts, but in different voices. like conversing with someone 2 feet away from you

I know I've had serious problems with depression in the past, to the point where I was diagnosed as being bi-polar. There were two occasions where I could've swore I heard "voices," but there was no way anyone was around. The voices didn't come from any direction that I could tell, and weren't very clear. I must admitt I was on some fairly heavy medications at the time and they may have contributed. If you feel you might be (for lack of a better term) "losing it," by all means seek out help. There is absolutely no shame in doing so.

Kinda funny how fragile the brain is. I remeber one time I had stayed up for 40 hours on a caffiene high and the last thing I did before I crashed was to have sex with my girlfriend. The whole time I was doing it I could've sworn that she had a detatchable vagina and was giving it to other people while I wasn't looking so it wouldn't seem like she was cheating. I'm all better now, and I'm never giong to stay up like that again.

Every once in awhile I'll hear stuff, the only one that I converse with on a regular basis is one that I've come to think of as sorta my guardian angel (after it physically kept me from doing something retarded and getting hit by a car).
There have been a few times when I thought I'd heard someone calling my name-- once it sounded like my little brother and once like my mome, but both times there was nobody there. When I mentioned it to a wiccan friend of mine she described it as being "fairy-led". And yellowgowild is right, going to long without sleep does some messed up stuff to you. I went 4 days once, and I was seeing some crazy things after the 3rd day. ^_^

Rarely before i go to sleep i hear something random like
"Yes" "No" "Anthony". I have never had anytihng dramitic happen to me lately,I guess its just something, its nothing that bothers me but its not like when I hear the voice they are beside me,They are inside me from all directions talking clear. Its not like thinking where you dont really hear words, the words are being heard. Its actually quite common from what I've found, sorta a pre-sleep thing. |

I work at a large mental health company so here goes...That NPR bit is from a tape that most MH providers have to educate police officers, clinicians, family members, etc. It's about 45 minutes long and you wear headphones and it is fucking scary to hear. By the end you actually think that people are talking about you right in front of your face. Scary as hell.
The people I see expireince Auditory Hallucinations lasting from 1 week on the minimal side to more than 6 months. Most being in the 2-3 month range. At first it starts off with subtle background noise like someone using a vaccum in another room. After a while the constant sound in your head causes a gradual loss of normal functions such as speech, perception, cognative thought. What's fucked up is that people go to one extreme or the other. Some loose speech and become catatonic others uncontrolable laughing. When that progresses the person begins to have delusions, which simply are false beliefs normally involving misinterpretation of events/experiences. Most common are 1) persecutory - they're being tricked, spied on, laughed at. 2) referential - gestures, books, songs, etc are specificaly about them. 3) religious - grandiose beliefs Those were the mild effects of auditory hallucinations. Here are the more serious ones. 1) thought withdrawl - someone or something has taking their thoughts out of thier mind. 2) thought insertion - an outside force is placing thoughts into thier mind. 3) delusions of control - body and actions are now in the control of another. These all manifest several ways. Sometimes the person hears a running comentary of all thier thoughts and actions. Sometimes there are 2 or more voices having a conversation. This usually is followed by the voices yelling and threating the person. In the end people either go into a catatonic state because they have simply shut down as a last ditch effort. They may being to speak 'word salad' babble with no form or function. Extreme agitation and violence can occur. Wayward sexual behavior, acting like a child, shouting mixed with excessive motor behavoir. Then for no apparent reason or cause, the people come out of it and are 'perfectly normal' again. They may not experience another relapse for 10-15 years. I hope that this can help you sort of see how it starts and how it progresses. It's really sad to see these people over an extended period. And I hate to say it but most people that suffer from this are for the most part abandoned by thier families. Fucked up world ain't it?

One time when I went without sleep for a couple of days I could have sworn that there was something behind me when I was on the computer, and when I turned around to see where it was it felt like it was behind me again. Was like this for about 5-10 minutes. Freaky stuff.

Once in a long while I hear someone who is dear to me call me or say a sentence - and they are no where around at all. It has never tied in with any event they or I was involved with - so it is both a rare and completely random event.
The inner dialogue voice that runs all the time is something we have that most people are not awake to - and when they notice it for the first time it is often amusing or disconcerting. That dialogue voice is important in that it can be whiney or talk trash or whatever - if you listen as if it was real thoughts instead of just an expression of your selfish id you will often stay upset or unhappy or locked into a negative mindset.
