If the internet itself is the brainchild of Army Intelligence then it just makes sense ,to any really paranoid individual, that any information gathering sites would be monitored by or even created for intelligence gathering agencies, like the CIA.... but for that matter, what makes TFP any safer?? How do I know I'm not being monitored here? Do you know where your pictures go?

Meh. Anyone who expects privacy in a public domain is an idiot. Anyone who expects privacy on the internet is delusional. Hell, even those who expect 100% privacy on a home computer that's connected to the internet kid themselves.

Any info you put out on the internet can be viewed by millions of others and used for whatever purposes. Even pictures in the Exhibition forum here can be used against the person who posted them - which is why I never post there. Who knows if any of the people I know are part of this community.

Bottom line is that if anyone wants to know more about you, they can find out tons of information quite easily. Case in point: college directories. For example, University of Illinois directory is open for anyone to look through and lists every student's phone number, name and address. Using that data, you can find out even more info about them (Facebook & MySpace anyone?).

While she may be "right" it still doesn't avoid the hassle and time it takes. I have the freedoms to do lots of things, but that doesn't mean I do them because I'd rather not have the hassle.

There's a very simple way to avoid all this, don't put anything about yourself on the net, use fake addresses, fake pics of people and say they are you, in a place like this never include anything so personal it might throw a bone in your direction.

On the other side, you can use the net to get even with people, pass off their phone numbers, pics, addresses in gay or pedophile or swapping sites.

My point is, ANYONE can get the information on you regardless of whether you put it on the net or not. Our lives are not so private, we have government files on us, credit files on us, and so on. It's why it is so easy for these "web detective" sites to find people, and we won't even talk about the background check sites.

I remember when this video first came out and not long afterwards I read some responses which called its accuracy into question (more specifically, whether or not it is accurately interpreting what it references). Furthermore, I find it sort of amusing that they need to play a convoluted "six degrees of separation" game in order to create this conspiracy theory.

I suppose I might have considered this video to be more credible if it didn't sound like it was made by a 14 year old.

(That said, of course one should be thoughtful regarding what kind of personal info they put on the net.)

Slight threadjack of my own thread here. Time and time again, the courts have rightly upheld the jurisdiction of local school boards and communities in determining the boundaries of moral terpitude and ethical behavior of its professionals. Teachers are expected to be legally bound by the ethics and mores of the communities they serve, and if she's a recent teacher ed student then she should have learned this in school.

Her photos wouldn't have caused so much as an eye-blink in many communities across this nation. However, there are other communities where her judgement would be seriously undermined by the contents of those photos. It is not rare at all for teachers to be fired in small towns for having extra-marital affairs, because it ruins their credibility with the community.

According to Mrs. O'Rights, who happens to be in Human Resources, more and more companies are taking a close look at things like myspace and facebook, before making the final determinations on hiring.
So, in other words, if you're neck and neck with the "other guy" for the dream job, and your myspace has pictures of you in a drunken stuper...guess what...the "other guy" may have just won out. Unless, of course, his myspace has a picture of him feeling up the CEO's daughter.
But...you get my drift.

From what I read it wasn't the community she was going to teach in, it was the university she was going to that refused to give her her credentials. And that is wrong, no school should be able to withhold your graduation and degree because of a picture and caption, unless it has a morals clause and is a private college.

i can't believe that picture stopped someone getting to graduate!!! where is the proof that she was actually drunk? i have a picture of myself on holiday when i'm 12 drinking irn bru and i look hammered - but i can assure you i wasn't (two years later mibee, but not at 12...)

i wonder what'll happen to future lawyers and doctors if people start seeing pics from their nights out...

I've read a lot about MySpace and Facebook profiles hurting one's chances at getting a job, but I've often wondered if it can help them.

If someone were to create a MySpace profile that had a professional layout that was serious in nature, I suspect it could ultimately serve as a virtual extension of one's resume, with the key difference being that it would present the canidate in a positive light instead of a negative one.

The fact that human resources and recruiters do scour MySpace and other social sites seems like it would be a worthwhile task in increasing one's value to a company.

I'll admit that this video had me intrigued at first, although it gets a bit weaker as it goes on. However, I think a more complete quote of the privacy policy is in order :

So, Facebook collects anonymous usage statistics. Well, christ, they have to pay the overhead somehow. I thought everybody knew by now that you never get something for nothing. A service that has no monetary cost is going to require some form of remuneration. Personally, I see nothing wrong with that.

Also, everything that has been said above. A small bit of knowledge goes a long way in ferreting out information online. The solution, of course, is to not post information online that you don't want to be publicly available.

Wow, scary. I had an account there briefly, and the cliques there are more exclusive than MySpace. People in Facebook aren't as eager to add strangers. I deleted my account without ever having added anyone. Glad I did...

Most people here know my real name and could probably find me prettily easily if they wanted to... I dont see what difference it makes.

I get junk mail all the time and marketing calls all the time anyway and did before I ever went online, I cant see what else Facebook is gonna do to me.

POINT: Do a Google (TM) search of your name, your email address, etc. Scary what comes back sometimes. Anybody can do it and anybody can see it. I've found ancient exgirlfriends that way. Tell me THAT isn't creepy.

Nobody is anonymous on a long enough timeline.

It is just a matter of who and why someone is scoping you out.
