Music trivia
Man.... I've been gone a long time... I didn't think my music trivia post would die! Where's my buddy God of Thunder? Anyways... lets see if we can get it going again....
Name the singer who is currently fronting Queen on tour. |
What's the name of that tune adopted by the GOLF Association that
you hear before every Golf tournament on TV? Lots of violins and strings swirling in a instrumental "Spring-day-in-Nature" sound. |
Quote:
paul rogers........ name 2 bands that paul rogers fronted. |
Free & Bad Company
Name the other band he fronted. (hint: It was with Jimmy Page) I think what happened with the old was was that it just ran it's course. I tried to revive it a couple of times and Flyman helped, but it fell by the side. Glad to see it back again. You may want to re-post the rules from the original. Glad to see it back. Let the stumping begin. |
Quote:
What band was Jimmy page with in mid 60s for a year or three. |
The Yard Birds
What band performs the song "Eat Steak", currently heard in Boston Market comercials? |
Quote:
What British glam-rockers was forced to retitle a single in 1971 that was about to bring his band international fame when an American group called Chase charted with a song by the same name? Edit: Forgot to ask a question. :o |
The question on the board is a stumper... we need a new, easier question Anxst.
|
Or a new question???
How, or should I say, from who, did the Ramones get that name? |
Quote:
The Ramones got their name from Paul McCartney, who used to call himself Paul Ramone when playing with his brother. New Question: What fictional member of the band Gorillaz supposedly fed-exed themselves to the audition for the band according to the band's backstory? |
Noodle, the Japanese guitarist.
From what movie did Duran Duran get their name from? |
DAMN!!!!!
i freakin' know this too............. i'll be back |
Quote:
Since we're on band names... Question: Jethro Tull is not a member of the band Jethro Tull. From whence did they get their name? |
Jethro Tull was a 16th? Century English Inventor. Not entirely sure if it was an improved plough or seed drill that he invented.
As long as we're on Jethro Tull, they've put out two albums that are each one long song. Name one to go forward, both to get a cookie. |
Jethro Tull was the inventor of the seed drill, if I remember rightly.
The two albums are Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play. Cookies for me! Question: The Cure, formerly named The Easy Cure, was originally formed in the late 70's in Crawley, England, with what band name? |
what is the name of Elton John's former boyfriend/songwriter?
|
jaymes, you have to answer the previous question before posting another.
BTW, Anxst, the answer to yours is "Obelisks", although they switched to "Malice" a few years after. At its smallest, Belle and Sebastian boasted how many members? |
Just to answer jaymes' question, it is Bernie Taupin.
But, per the rules, Bob Biter's question is currently the live one. For those of you not aware of them, they are: From version 1 of this thread. Quote:
|
Quote:
Good call knowing they were originally Obelisks, though! |
Belle and Sebastian, a British band that is credited for the entire soundtrack to the film "Storytelling" had 7 members originally, but now only has 5.
Next question: Which of David Bowie's albums contains his first #1 US hit? |
Quote:
|
You are correct, Anxst! Fire away.
|
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin used to often play two guitar songs (White Summer/Black Mountainside) that were listed as written by him. They are actually sped up versions of two old folk songs with the words removed. What were the two folk songs?
|
Oh Susanna and Camptown Races?
|
Quote:
The correct answer is She Moves Through the Fair and Blackwater Side. So, new question: Led Zeppelin also played a song entitled "Boogie with Stu". Who was Stu? |
"Stu" was Ian Stewart, tour manager for the Rolling Stones.
ZZ Top was formed by members of which two bands? |
Billy Gibbons was in the "Moving Sidewalks" as far as I can remember, but I'm not sure after that.
|

Sorry for the delay, I was at my sister's for the holidays.
Paul Young's big hit in the 80's was "Everytime You Go Away" was originally writen and recorded by what Philedelphia artist? |
Philly artist....... hmmmm I'll go with Chubby Checker.....lol just a guess.
|
kay........i found either.....Daryl Hall
or Brian Mcknight. |
I believe it was originally wrtten by Darryl Hall, of Hall and Oates.
|
Darryl Hall is correct. Flyman had it first.
|
brain freeze this mornin' fellas........i'll let someone else ask the next one.
|
I think Anxst should get the honors.
|
Thank you, gentlefolk. Okay, we'll go for a tough one and see what happens.
At the time of his death, Jeff Buckley was working on an album, of which the unfinished tracks were released as "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk". This album began life as a writing contest between Jeff and what other famous musician to see who could write the best song? |
Seems I've posted another thread killer.
Someone else take the helm! |
I'll toss out a softball question.......
The Who and the KINKS have a very common thread (musically). The early success of both was due to a US producer. He produced the KINKS until Ray Davies pushed him out and he went onto produce the Who...... Who was this producer? Extra points if you can tell me what else these 2 bands had in common once they began working with this producer. |
The producer was Shel Talmy, but, for the life of me, I don't know what they had in common! Tell me!
|
Both groups changed their name to their popular one after they started recording with Talmy.
The Ravens became the Kinks and the High Numbers became the Who. (I don't know about the Who but Talmy didn't have anything to do with the Kinks name change.) Just a little trivia..... Good show Bob your turn. |
Quick one to keep it going: What sex is The Reflex, in the song of the same name?
|
The Reflex, "is a only child, he's waiting in the park."
/me knows his Duran Duran :D Speaking of Duran Duran, when Warren Cuccurullo replaced Andy Taylor on guitar, which band did he come from? |
missing persons????
|
Quote:
|
3/5's of pearl jam were in a band before they formed...........
stone, mike and jeff............can you name the band? |
temple of the dog???
|
I believe they all came from Mother Love Bone.
|
Quote:
BINGO!!!!!!!!! damn fine band too........... you're up my friend |
Monty Python's zany classic 'Sit on my Face' is sung to the tune of what 1930's hit musical song?
|
Quote:
We all know Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. What is his given name? And for bonus, what band did he play in prior to RHCP? |
Flea's real name is Michael Balzary. I know in the early 80's he was the bassist for Fear. And, I know he went to Juilliard for his skills....on the trumpet.
|
*bump*
someone ask a Q........we can't let this thread die again fellas. |
anyone?????????
|
Quote:
Hint: It wasn't Cliff Burton. |
Ron McGovney played two shows with them.
and was on the Demo "No life til leather" i think it was called. |
Quote:
|
who was the guitarist to replace Ace Frehley in kiss.
the first one. |
That was Vinnie Vincent, who I believe lasted an entire two years with the band before being replaced (again) by Bruce Kulick, who in turn was replaced by Ace Frehly. See, it's all a bit circle.
Kurt Cobain is famous for starting Nirvana with Krist Novoselic, but they went through several drummers before finding one that worked in Dave Grohl. Name one of those drummers. Or all of them, if you can. And for bonus points : Dave played drums and Kurt had the limelight as the singer and guitarist. However, Dave provided vocals on exactly one Nirvana song. Name the song and the single it was a b-side for. |
Quote:
sorry, no answer here, but your Q now has me thinking of my favourite lyric over and over: "I love to hear you o-ra-lise When I'm between your thighs You blow me away" |
i got chad channing....and dale crover........still tryin to dial in the tune Dave sang
|
Quote:
Quote:
Actually, it was Bob Kulick (Bruce's big brother). He appeared on the studio songs on side 4 of Alive II (except "Rocket Ride"). But since KISS hid that fact until much later, Vinnie is the correct answer. Not trying to bust your chops here martian, I'm sure the populous of this thread would have been dissapointed if I didn't chime in on this :D The line is succession goes as follows: Ace Frehely Bob Kulick (temp) Ace Frehley Vinne Vincent Mark St. John (only lasted the Animalize album and tour) Bruce Kulick Ace Frehley (reunion, Pyscho Circus and Farewell tours) Tommy Thayer (all the rest) |
well hell GOT........i even forgot about Bob Kulick.
nice sluething. |
I'll admit to only having a passing familiarity with KISS, so I wasn't aware that Bob Kulick filled in before Vinnie. I also forgot about Mark St. John (I knew this beforehand but didn't remember when writing the above post) but seeing as the question was about the first replacement and not the subsequent ones, I reckon that doesn't matter.
Anyone up to speed on Nirvana trivia and want to take a crack at mine, or should I try something a little easier? EDIT - Sorry, flyman, I missed that previous post. Both of those answers are acceptable. Nirvana was officially created in '88; Kurt and Krist played prior to that together under a variety of names (such as Pen Cap Chew and the ever-charming Fecal Matter) with a man by the name of Aaron Burkhard on drums. They did a bit of work with Dale Crover here as well; he did the drumming for their first demos, including the Love Buzz demo. Finally, they settled on the name Nirvana and quickly got rid of Burkhard after he got drunk one night and ended up getting Kurt's car impounded. They briefly used a man by the name of Dave Foster here, although he's rarely mentioned. Fact is, he hardly played with them. He was hired as their second drummer in '88, but didn't even make it to the Love Buzz recordings before they sacked him (Crover filled in on that demo). After that fiasco, they settled on Chad Channing, who played drums for them from '88-'90. In 1990 they decided that Chad just wasn't right for the band, so they fired him. Crover filled in for some of their demos again, before a man by the name of Dave Grohl was referred to them. And we all know how that turned out. So, in summary, the acceptable answers (in order) are Aaron Burkhard, Dave Foster, Chad Channing and Dale Crover. As to Grohl's song, I'll give you a bit longer to see if you can dig it up. As a hint, the song Spoiler: appears only on one single as the B-Side to one specific track of the In Utero album. |
dooood.............i tried the nirvana a couple posts up
Quote:
|
Looks like you're up then Flyman.
Astound and amaze us with you question. If that doesn't work, then just confuse the hell out of us  |
I'm going to assume that nobody's going to get the Grohl song, so in the interest of keeping things moving (and since it was a bonus question anyway), I'll give up the answer.
The song in question is called Marigold. It's rarely heard and was released as a B-side to Heart Shaped Box, behind Milk It. The song is notable because it features Dave singing and drumming, with Kurt playing guitar and providing back-up vocals. This is the only Nirvana song that was not written and sung by Cobain. Your turn, flyman. |
okay easy one.......
what is Randy Rhoads full name. i want the middle name here too. |
|
nicely done bro.........
you're up. and yes it is a good bio isn't it? |
Thinking of Randy Rhoads got me thinking of Quiet Riot.
So what two Slade songs did Quiet Riot remake? |
i only got one........
come on feel the noise. the other slips my mind at the moment. *starts listening to his Quiet Riot records for inspiration* |
Quote:
got that album in mp3 and cassette I've got the other (hint) album on vinyl |
gonna guess with
momma were all crazy now? |
There it is
Mama Weer All Crazee Now Cum On Feel The Noize Quiet Riot thought Cum On Feel The Noize sucked! their producer made them record it. They intentionally played it crappy out of protest turned out the "punk" feel just made it a bigger hit. tag your it! |
who replaced Keith Moon of The Who (1979-1982) after his death.
|
Kenney Jones did.
While recording The Joshua Tree, Bono forgot his wife Ali's birthday, or simply failed to return home depending on who you hear it from. In any case, he was in the doghouse in a big way; to make it up to her, he wrote her a song that was reviled by his band mates and producer alike. Presumably it worked, since he's still with the same woman more than two decades later. Name that tune. |
tough one Martian............working on it
|
"With or Without You"
|
pan - Sorry, no.
Okay, let's make it a bit easier. Spoiler: At the time, the band and producer all hated the song and it didn't make the cut for the Joshua Tree, being relegated to B-Side status. However, the song was re-recordrd and released about ten years later and ended up being a single in it's own right. The video to this song is also a shameless apology to Ali. The phrase 'I'm sorry' can be seen several times and it includes some of Ali's favourite things, such as the Chippendale dancers and the band Boyzone. |
The Sweetest Thing.
/me is a huge U2 fan Along the same lines as Martian's question: The song "One Tree Hill" off of Joshua Tree is named after an actual place. Where is "One Tree Hill"? |
It's down in New Zealand.
Let's leave the U2 behind for a bit. How about one for the folks in the T-Dot... Back in the summer of 2003 several big name acts got together to perform a benefit concert to promote tourism in Toronto. This was right after the big SARS scare, so the concert was aptly titled Sarstock. The show included quite the list of performers, including AC/DC, The Guess Who, Rush and the Rolling Stones. One performer, however, was famously bood off the stage after being pelted with water bottles. Who was it? |
gotta be that justin timberlake dude.......
|
That it was.
I don't really get what the guy expected. I remember when the line-up was announced and it was AC/DC, Rush, The Stones, The Guess Who, Blue Rodeo, The Flaming Lips and... Justin Timberlake? One of these things is not like the other... Anyway, you're up flyman. |
i got nothin' at the moment man.........
i'll let you toss a Q out there. and thanks for helping keep this thread goin'. |
No problem my wacky tabaccy toking friend. I got so much music trivia in this old skull of mine, I could do one of these just to myself.
Next question : The Eagles had a modest hit with the song Ol' 55. However, Don Henley did not write this tune. In fact, he once said of the original singer 'he hated our cover, that is until the royalty cheque came.' Who did it first? |
tom waits
no time right now---maybe i'll think of a q and post later. in the mean time, carry on... |
Quote:
Alright, 'nother one then. And I'm gonna make this one harder, since the last two were gimmes. Keeping with Don Henley for now... Before Don Henley played in the Eagles, he had a smaller Texas band called Shiloh. This band was backed financially by another famous Texan. Name that man. |
ross perot?
|
Good guess.
It's wrong, but still a good guess. |
Stevie Ray Vaughn??
|
Also wrong. Maybe this one is a bit too challenging.
I'll leave it up for today, then replace it with something easier if nobody gets it. |
I'll say drayton mcclane but the guy who owned the Cowboys Tex Schram? seems to ring a bell...... nope I'm wrong
|
Kenny Rogers?
|
EDIT : Finally! flstf takes it.
You're up. |
Which artist performed her Oscar-winning song at the ceremony accompanied by a group of deaf kids but complaints that their signing was completely incomprehensible led to an admission that they were in fact rounded up from a local school and could all hear perfectly well. This was also the number one song that year, a one hit wonder.
|
Debby Boone, "You Light Up My Life"?
Man, I'm sad to even know that song. |
Yep, you got it God of Thunder.
Incidentally, I really hate that song. :) |
what's not to hate, really?
trivial groundrule question: are the topics here restricted to pop music? so if i were to ask which synth/tape music composer began her career as an assistant to pierre henry, would that be within the rules of the game? for example. |
roachboy - It's not at all restricted to pop music, as my Tom Waits question would seem to indicate (although I suppose it could be argued that's an Eagles question). So your question about Eliane Radigue would be perfectly acceptable. ;)
Just remember that the more obscure you go, the higher the chance of it being a stumper. |
bring it to us roachboy...........don't be shy man.
