I forget the rules. What do I do if nobody guesses? Hand it on to someone else?

No, just ask a new question.

God of Thunder 01-30-2006 12:01 PM

You forgot the part where we pat you on the back for asking a stumper.

The rules, the Cliff Notes® version:
Answer a question correctly, you get to ask a new one.
The current question is alive for 24 hours, then it is a stumper.
Guess as many time as you want.
No cheating. (your conscious will guide you through this one)
Have fun
Wipe hands on pants

Derwood 01-30-2006 12:21 PM

anyone? anyone? i'm waiting for a question i can answer so i can ask my stupid hard one

balderdash111 01-30-2006 05:16 PM

Ok, thanks for the refresher.

The answers were:

Dire Straits
Mark Knopfler
The Notting Hillbillies

And the Bonus Question?

the group: Voices that Care
the cause: the first Iraq war
the song: also "Voices that care"

New question - a gimme for the crowd:

Name all 5 Beatles (not counting Sir George Martin)

The_Jazz 01-30-2006 07:43 PM

John Lennon
Paul McCartney
George Harrison
Ringo Starr
and either Stuart Sutcliffe or Pete Best depending on what kind of mood you're in.

Who wrote "Crazy" made famous by Patsy Cline?

Martian 01-30-2006 08:09 PM

Just an off-hand guess, I'm going to go with Willy Nelson.. I know he did some song writing before he landed his own contract and it seems like about the right time.

The_Jazz 01-31-2006 05:30 AM

Correct.

Your turn.

Martian 01-31-2006 05:44 AM

Okay.. hmm, lessee.

The Foo Fighters song is thought by a great many people to be Dave's tribute to Kurt Cobain. Mr. Grohl has, however, revealed the truth of the matter in interviews.

Who is the song about?

EDIT - Whoops.. this is why early morning posting is bad. The song is question is My Hero.

Derwood 01-31-2006 06:10 AM

which foo foghters song?

I was thinking Pete Best, but you are right about Sutcliffe. Brain fart

His father?

Martian 01-31-2006 10:57 PM

No.

I'm probably not going to be around tomorrow, so I'll post the answer and give the next question as a toss-up.

It's actually a trick question. Grohl credits the song as being a tribute to a variety of sources; his father is one, Cobain is another; it's not actually about any one specific person, but rather a whole host of people who have served as guide or inspiration to him.

EDIT - Nobody has a question? What is this?

I'm still leaving this as a toss-up. Somebody ask something.

gboz 02-02-2006 12:07 PM

An easy one to get things rollin'
Janis Joplin's hometown is......

The_Jazz 02-02-2006 12:50 PM

That would be the lovely town of Port Arthur, TX.

A little bit harder now -

Black Francis of The Pixies is known as Frank Black for all of this solo stuff. What is his real name?

The_Jazz 02-04-2006 08:21 AM

OK, no answers in over 36 hours, so here it is - Charles Thompson.

I'll let someone else pick this up since I can't think of anything at the moment.

Martian 02-04-2006 04:55 PM

In the interest of keeping things moving...

Echo and the Bunnymen were pretty big in the punk scene of the late seventies and early eighties. They're still around today, even though we don't hear all that much about them.

It's a three piece band, but none of the band members are named or go by Echo.

So just who is Echo?

Fly 02-04-2006 06:17 PM

echo was that fucking drum machine no?

Martian 02-04-2006 06:41 PM

Echo was that fucking drum machine, yes. The band thought it'd be 'punk' to give a machine top billing.

You're up.

Fly 02-05-2006 07:06 AM

aww hell Martian........too busy today to play.......someone can have my Q............

Martian 02-05-2006 12:49 PM

Alright, let's here's a nice easy one to (hopefully) get things moving.

Nirvana's album Nevermind is actually named after a prior album, produced by another group. Kurt liked the group and liked the name, so he named his album Nevermind in tribute.

What was the group and album?

Martian 02-06-2006 08:19 PM

I refuse to believe that nobody knows the answer to this.

The album in question is Nevermind the Bollocks. The group is the Sex Pistols.

Eh. Another toss-up. Let's see if anyone's interested in continuing this thread.

The_Jazz 02-07-2006 06:12 AM

Hopefully this will get a response - One of the best selling albums of all times, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" almost wasn't released because of some occult themes that went against the church teachings that Jackson and his siblings were raised with. He quit that church in 1987. Which denomination was Mr. Never-Proven-In-Court?

gboz 02-07-2006 09:14 AM

Was he a Jehovah's Witness?

The_Jazz 02-07-2006 09:24 AM

Correct! And that makes it your turn to keep this going!

gboz 02-07-2006 12:04 PM

What was the relationship of Marvin Gaye to his killer?

The_Jazz 02-07-2006 01:09 PM

The shooter was his father.

What was the name of the nearby town where the plane carrying Ritchie Vallens, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly crashed? Bonus points if you can name the person that gave up their seat to the Big Bopper (part of Buddy's backing band and a star later in his own right).

God of Thunder 02-07-2006 01:22 PM

Good to see some new blood in here. I'm glad to see this thread moving again.

I'll hold up answering the current question to keep the current players active.

God of Thunder 02-08-2006 04:09 PM

Seeing no one else is stepping in, the town is Mason City, Iowa. They had just left a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa.

The band member who gave up his seat was Waylon Jennings.

Speaking of Waylon, he was in a band "The Highwaymen" Who were the other country superstar members of that group?

The_Jazz 02-08-2006 04:16 PM

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristopherson.

What nationally prestigious academic award did Kristopherson win while a student? Bonus points if you can name where he got his undergrad degree.

pan6467 02-11-2006 09:15 AM

I'll give this a bump.

What famed group in 1967-68 took Warner Bros. records to court and made it so that the copyright holders of songs NOT the record companies were able to decide where the songs were published?

In other words If K-Tel wanted to do a collage of hits the song writer and band (or holder of the intellectual copyright) had the right to say "OK" and collect money.... not the record companies.

Fly 02-17-2006 05:32 PM

****hello****

Fly 02-27-2006 07:17 PM

okay............

fuck this.....i'm gonna kick start this fucker again

give me the day, month and year, that John Henry Bonham passed away........

sunkssd 02-28-2006 06:30 AM

09/25/1980. I believe he died of asphyxiation.

What state is the Grand Funk Railroad from?

Sage 02-28-2006 12:06 PM

Michigan

Hrm.... *reaches deep into her memory banks...*

ON the Smashing Pumpkin's album Adore, there's a song called "For Martha." Who is Martha?

Derwood 02-28-2006 02:09 PM

Billy Corgan's mother

Here is one that you should be ashamed for knowing without doing research:

Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice was a member of what one-and-done hair metal band in the late 80's?

Fly 02-28-2006 06:12 PM

whitesnake..........?

Derwood 03-01-2006 06:36 AM

nope. This band literally had one album (though one or two videos on MTV)

God of Thunder 03-01-2006 06:55 AM

You would be talking about Blue Murder.

I actually have that album. /hangs heads in shame.

How did I miss the Grand Funk question?? I went to school with Mel Schacher's cousin!!

New question:

/me reaches down into the "Grab Bag O' Trivia"

Billy Idol was in punk band before going solo, what was the name of that band?

The_Jazz 03-01-2006 07:04 AM

Wasn't he in "X"?

Don't feel bad. I went out of my way to find the mp3 for "In the Valley of the Kings"

Martian 03-02-2006 12:53 AM

GoT, I probably would've given that one to him.

The band in question was actually called Generation X.

Next up :

Allow me to paint a picture. The band is Radiohead. The scene: a recording studio in their earlist days.

Thom Yorke brought a song to the band to be recorded and the producer liked it very much. Guitarist Johnny Greenwood had a differing opinion on the work however and attempted to show his displeasure by sabotaging the recording session. The producer, on hearing Greenwood's efforts, decided that they added just the right amount of tension to the song and kept them in. The track later went on to be a huge hit.

What was the song and what did Greenwood do to ruin it?

I'm sorry I dropped out. I've been very, very busy lately. In the event that this ends up being a stumper and if I am unable to return in time to post a replacement question, I'd like to nominate The_Jazz to post a replacement in my stead, since I sort of stole his thunder on that last one.

I considered it, but there was a punk band called X that came out of LA. They released a few albums and had some MTV airplay, so that's probably who the_jazz was referring to.

Derwood 03-02-2006 05:20 AM

I'm guessing the song is Creep and Greenwood added that big crunchy guitar pre-chorus.

I probably asked this one on the first Trivia thread, and it's an easy one, but it'll keep the ball rolling until I find a better question:

Who is the only member of Pink Floyd to appear on every Floyd studio release?

balderdash111 03-02-2006 12:16 PM

Floyd answer: Nick Mason.

(cue inane argument as to whether PF without Waters is really PF)

I guess that means I need a question...

The Police had two recurring lyrical/vocal motifs in their songs (put more simply, there are two lyrics/vocal things that show up in more than one song). Name at least one.

A good guess. There's not much more to be said on the subject; Greenwood tried to ruin it and the idea kind of backfired.

As to the Police question, I know I know it but I can't think of anything right now. I hate it when that happens..

God of Thunder 03-03-2006 03:34 AM

"It's a big enough umbrella, but it's always me who ends up getting wet" shows up in two songs , but I'm too tired to remember which ones right now.

I'll ask a question when I get to work.

balderdash111 03-03-2006 08:24 AM

That's right. It shows up in "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" and "Oh My God"

The full lyric is:

Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days
Since we first met?
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet.

FYI, the other thing I was thinking of is how they like to repeat the word "Cha!" in a bunch of songs.

Booray 03-23-2006 04:31 PM

Seeing as there's been no activity on this thread for 20 days, here's a new question (hopefully hasn't been asked before):

What British guitarist played the lead guitar (during his time as a session guitarist) in the original Tom Jones recording of "It's Not Unusual"?

gboz 03-24-2006 07:08 AM

Jeff Beck? Just a guess.

I do believe that was jimmy page, right?

If that was right, I'd like to put a new question. It's kinda hard I think, so I can give hints.

I can think of two albums within the past 10 years whos album title is not the name of a song but rather appears in a song on the album, and shortly after the album's namesake is said, the phrase "I apologize" is said (no more than 3 words between the album title and the phrase)

I hope that's clear, if not tell me and I'll reword.

I know its random and wierd and maybe kinda lame, just some weird coincidence I noticed one day. It will probably take a while to answer, so by all means someone can ask another question in the meantime too, to keep the thread alive.
