Evanescence at Billboard
SO BAD! How in god's name do you play that poorly at THE BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS. This was a pretty big gig for them and they totally choked. For those of you who dont know what I'm talking about, Evanescence was on stage playing "My Immortal" and once the full band came in, one of the guitarists was terribly out of tune. The whole time. It's kind of a shame really... all Amy Lee could say at the end of the song was "WOW" and then looked back at her bandmates with such a dissapointment in her eyes.

At least they weren't lipsynching.
Since the original version was just Amy, a piano, and the Symphony, the other band members pobably felt left out and threw together that piss-poor extra bit so it would be a "band" performance. |

Alright, so they choked. Give 'em a break, everybody screws up. Granted, not everybody screws up that bad, and everybody certainly doesn't screw up that badly at the billboard music awards, but they're only human.... Except in that one video.

Wow, that was pretty bad. There were some hard core wrong notes being played there. Even Amy Lee was amazed by the badness. Sucks.

Wow..just....wow. You guys really weren't kidding, were you? I mean, Amy Lee went a little outta tune, but..that's kinda understandable when you're on stage I guess. But that guitarist, wtf?
On a different note (haha had to do it), I think Amy Lee has a nice voice. And she's hott.

Well, that guitarist was way, way, way out of tune or something.
But really, I felt like those violinists and celloists were debasing themselves by playing for this song. That was an extraordinarily bland song, punctuated by moments of true crap. Just because a band utilizes a slow melody and a piano doesn't mean it deserves an orchestra. I didn't have an opinion on Evanescence before now, but wow, that was a bad song, even if the guitarist would have done fine.

Since they were using a real orchestra they had to transpose the song to accomodate certain instruments. The guitar player either didn't get the memo or didn't know how to transpose. -or- Amy Lee had a cold and the entire song had to be transposed to accomodate her inability to hit the higher notes for this performanace. The guitar player either didn't get the memo or didn't know how to transpose. -or- The guitar player was in standard tuning and the song is in an alternate tuning or the other way around. -or- The guitar player was miffed because he was playing with Evanescence (or something) and sabotaged the performance. In any case the guitar player came across as very unprofessional. I for one REFUSE to cut anyone slack for playing like that. He should have just dropped out. There is no excuse for it if you are a professional. Doug |

Ok, so I watched this...It was bad, but not horrible, I think the sound man must have recognised the problem and turned down the guitarist, because he comes in strong at the beginning and then is less audible towards the end....He was definitely playing in the wrong key...
It's a good thing that Amy has a nice voice and can play the piano, otherwise there would have been no redeeming qualities of the performance. Either way, the music is too whiny and formulaic for my tastes.

Reminds me of a White Zombie perfomance about 10 years ago, I think it was on an MTV award show. I don't recall what the specific problem was, but I think it was the guitar that was playing at least a beat off from the rest of the group. And I don't think that "More Human Than Human" is that challenging of a piece to play. I distinctly remember people cheering at the end, and the really cute bass player looking at the audience like "Are you serious? Were you even listening?"

Yeah, that was awful. I don't understand how the guitarist didn't prepare for this or why he didn't stop when he realized he sucked the bag.
Is it just me, or is the 'grand piano' Amy Lee is playing just a keyboard with a 'Baldwin' grand piano mock-up around it? |

-edit- Nevermind. I just watched it in it's entirety that is not a ConcertMaster. Anyway, there were more problems than just the guitar here. It sounded like some of the strings were out too. Amy Lee was flat throughout the entire thing. I'm thinking she had a cold and they had to transpose the song. Her vocal was obviously auto-tuned, but auto-tune only corrects to the NEAREST pitch so if she was horribly out of tune it will correct incorrectly. Does that make sense? Since she was playing a "keyboard" instead of a real piano I am going to assume that she did not know how to transpose the song on her own. You can transpose an entire keyboard so that the player just plays it normally but the notes are transposed. She also said, "Sorry" in the very beginning to the conductor. What was that all about? This is a classic example of a group of people (excluding the orchestra) with very little performing experience. Doug Last edited by vanblah; 12-10-2004 at 03:51 PM.. |

God dammit I hate this fucking Mac! Does anyone have this shit in another format that I can actually view?(There is no application available to open the document "Evanescence-My Immortal-BBMA 12") n Like mpg, or mov, maybe even wmv or rm? Either way their original guitarist Ben Moody was part of the big orchestral re-make of the song (Shit so didn't fuckin need it) and he left the band. I'm not sure if they've really found a suitable replacement for the guy yet. He was pretty good. From what it sounds like though they had more problems than just the guitarist. And as far as I've heard from both bands the only similarity between them and Lacuna Coil is that both bands have a female vocalist...they don't write the same kind of material, they don't play the same kind of material as far as I know, people should really just leave em alone already with that shit. Just like Bush was ripping off Nirvana and Silverchair were ripping off Pearl Jam, etc. etc.

That was simply bad. There is no excuse for that, tuning a guitar is not a difficult procedure. Playing in tune is one of the most important aspects of a performance and that was awful. He should have flipped his volume off and just faked it, it sounds better without his part anyway. Amy sounded like she was having some intonation problems as well in the beginning when she was trying to sing softer but when she was belting it out it had that beautiful quality that always gets me. I love her. Screw that guitar player.

I saw them in concert in cleveland, and they pretty much blew. I was in the first row, and could not hear her singing sometimes, because of how overpowering the drums and guitar were. Still, they just need more experiance on stage i guess?

Well I just listened to it against the CD. It is tuned down a note or 2 below the cd version. Plus, I don't even know why they put that whole "heavy guitar" part in to it. It's a nice piano, orchestra, amy's voice song on the CD. IMO, they screwed the real song over by adding all that crap in. The first time I heard it with the guitar was when they played it on the radio, maybe the addition of the guitar made it more mainstream playable.
Fallen is a great album though. |

Where was Mr. Sound Guy in the midst of this? I mean, someone's got to be listening and sitting at the sound board. Just drop the guitar out! It wasn't even close to the violin counterpart. Of course, moments after, her voice and the violin's don't match up at all either. I think they collectively dropped the ball on that one. Ah well, I'd be lying if I claimed I haven't fucked up like that in public a time or two myself. Fortunately, of coruse, mine aren't broadcast live on national television.

she sounded like she had a cold. The orchestra sounded fine to me the vioinist seemed to be fighting the guitarist to an extent..trying to be louder then the guitarist...either that or the sound guy amped him up to mask the guitar....
yeah the guitarist is a dead one....no instrumentalist should ever keep playing when they are playing so out of tune...either a. stop playing..or b. get on the right page. Never keep playing and hurt the group as a whole. It's too bad because Amy's singing was good. (from working with some vocalists from time to time..I've gotten to expect them to be a little out of tune....)
