A thread about Prince - or about nowdays music
Hello,
I'm a Prince fan. I still follow his works and I think he is one of the greatest performers. Anyway, I know he is a "strange" guy. And I really understand people that lost his albums since early 90's, because the Symbol, the Tafkap stuffs and all the problems with Warner/Mtv... But I think he can still give a lot to world and American music in the world (I'm Italian) that's why I ask to you: what should he do to come back in the mind/soul/heart of the people that used to listen to his music ? what's wrong in his attitude ? Thank you. Simo

Pick one:
A. I think he should listen to Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' album, then write songs like that. B. Change his name back to the one his momma gave him, not 'symbol', not 'Prince'. C. Just be a man and not hide behind marketing gimmickery (This could apply to a lot of performers).

A. Interestin - I will listen to Powerslave, thank you for your tip. B. His name is "Prince Roger Nelson". C. I think he is now a man more than before the problem is that doesn't care about marketing gimmickery, he makes album without videos, talking against warner, he share his music on napster and he is for peer2peer.

Ha! every band should play songs that sound like the Powerslave album....imagine Prince singing Rime of the Ancient Mariner! Prince is cool in that he doesn't put up with all the corporate bullshit. He changed his moniker to that symbol, so he could produce more albums with different record companies, Warner Bros., don't own the rights to that "symbol".

I thought he was only contractually bound with the name Prince? I coulda swore he changed it, so he didn't have the obligation....hey, I've been wrong in the past. Now I'm interested....

No. He did it to upset Warner Brothers, but he was still contractually bound to them. You can't just go make albums with another company because you change your name. I thought he was only contractually bound with the name Prince? I coulda swore he changed it, so he didn't have the obligation....hey, I've been wrong in the past. Now I'm interested.... ---------------------------------------------------- I think this is the story. In his contract with warner, that they signed in the early 90's, he had to put out 8 albums. He changed his name in that symbol in the middle '90, but he was still working with Warner Bros. At the end of the 8th album, he was "free" to decide with who work. Then he let Emi - Arista to distribute albums, with that name "The Artist formerly known as Prince" - with the Symbol. At the end of the 1999, warner didn't own the rights about the name "PRINCE", so he was back to be "Prince".

I guess you think he is still writing in the 80's style. I don't think it's true. He is still funky, but timberlake is funky too, this doesn't mean justin doens't sell. Latest album was "The rainbow children" - a jazzy style album. Please, can you name a couple of those horrible 80's hair band ? thank you

Prince changed his name to the symbol, and changed it back to Prince when he was let out of his Warner's contract in 1996. His first album (Emancipation) was still credited by the Symbol. He changed it in 1999, saying in a press conference saying that he no longer needed it.
I'm not a huge Prince fan, but just a click check of AMG All Music proves that he didn't make an album for any company other than Warner Brothers (except for his own company, but he was still under Warner's I think) during his time there. |

In the 1999, in the album "Rave un2 the joy fantastic", made by Npg Records and distibuted by Arista, the producer was Prince, but still "created" by Tafkap. In that link you suggest ushttp://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...=Bumf6zffheh2k you can read: Emancipation Npg/Emi, Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic Npg/Arista and The Rainbow children Redline. So that link proves something a little bit different, I think. In the 2000, as you can read here: Rolling stones Prince's biography "The vexing question of what to call a man whose name is an unpronouncable symbol came to an official end in May 2000, when The Artist Formerly Known As Prince announced that since his Warner/Chappell publishing contract expired on Dec. 31, 1999 he would formally be taking back the name Prince. " Anyway, thank you l_o_c, because I didn't know allmusic.com

Hi folks,
I don't care about his name, or lack thereof. I'm not a huge fan, although, my wife is. I just think the most important thing is that he can perform. I bought my wife the Rave DVD and we watched it. I'm going to tell you what, the man can perform! He is without a doubt an excellent guitar player and excellent showman. He has the respect of his peers and mine also. It's much like the fact that I can't stand Michael Jackson or his music, but he too is an excellent performer.

I used to be a huge Prince fan, lets say back in 85 and earlier. His songs then were risky and not what you would hear anywhere else. Purple Rain hit the screens and life was complete.
But then I don't know, well first I stoped roller skating on a weekly basis so that probably had a lot to do with it. And then Breakin' came out and i couldn't do back spins to little red corvette. Then I drove out to the farm he bought his mother and was sickened by the security around the place... windmills in the middle of a minnesota field...... open and shut the car door and the place lights up like vegas.... DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!! I do however respect what he has done, he doesn't bow to the record industry and that in my book is worth more than a multi platnimum britney spears regurgitated crap album

I agree with all your words. He is a very good performer, maybe the best one. Most of the nowdays artists have inspired by him and his music: Lenny Kravitz - No doubt - Sheryl Crow - Beck - Norah Jones - Alicia Keys - Eve - Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (oops !) As guitar player is great in anyway: electric guitar, electric bass or acoustic. About MJ, I have never seen him play a piano or a guitar, that's very strange for an European guy like me. I (we) think a musician is a musician when he/she plays an instrument.

I really believe record industry sucks. And he is fighting his own battle against them, that's why we all should support him, regardless our opinion about his music. What you think about this ?

I'm not a big fan, though not in the sense that I dislike him.As a musician,he is world class as is the musicians who make up the band. In a lot of ways he's very similar to Sting in his professionalism.Of course he could always change and be commercial and popular again but then he'd have to write shit music, load up the skanks in his videos and I dunno..wear a bandaid on his face and syntactically de-evolve the english language.
