britney and boring artistic songs
from this week's Entertainment Weekly:
<blockquote> ''Anyone can sit down and write some boring artistic song,'' says Britney Spears. ''Pop music is the hardest s--- to write.''</blockquote> i have NO idea what she means by that. is she debating the merits of sitting down to write a boring artistic song vs. standing up to write a (hopefully not boring) artistic song? or is she just inviting everyone to write a boring artistic song? um, while sitting down. if pop music is the hardest s--- to write, maybe that explains why there are so many really bad pop songs. written while sitting down. OTOH there is that barry manilow song that starts out with that classical piece, which is kind of artistic because it is based on classical music. but barry manilow is such a manly man that me probably stood up to write his boring artistic song. anyway, i dunno how britney feels about non-boring artistic songs.

maybe it's because she's thinking now that she's no longer blonde...
and how there are 12 writers on JLo's Jenny from the block.. I'll never understand because there's like what 15 words in the whole song?

What a dumb bitch. I don't even think she writes her songs and it's not because it's hard. It's because she fucking brain dead. She has no talent. She a smokin hot piece of ass that every guy wants to fuck! She has zero musical talent. She couldn't plant any instrument to save her life. What a stupid ass.

If you think about it though pop music IS hard to write when you consider how many songs are wrote with the goal of being popular. Not to side with her or anything because the comment is pretty stupid but she does have a point. Although I'm not sure why she's so worried about writing songs since I doubt she wrote any of her own music.

Good God.
I nearly had a seizure after reading that. And I'm not even joking. My jaw dropped, eyes widened, I threw my hands in the air, lost control of them and started shaking them, and finally screamed "WHAT?!" My heart pounded out of shock at the sheer stupidity of that statement as I digested it, reading the rest of this thread. I'm still full of raw emotion from reading it in fact. That has got to be the dumbest, most insulting statement pertaining to music that I have ever read in my entire life. You want to know why she perceives pop music as being so hard to write? I'll tell you why. It's because there is no creativity involved in it. Zero. Zilch. Nada. And I'm serious when I say that's hard to write, because it really is difficult to come up with something new that sounds just like everything else. HOWEVER, she obviously (and, what a shocker here) has never written any "artistic" music and certainly hasn't written any successful "artistic" music. Creation is much harder than imitation. In fact, it's possible to be creatively imitative - it was done for centuries in music, especially during the middle ages. If/when I listen to Britney Spears I hear a voice that reminds me of a hot girl whom I wouldn't mind seeing naked and I hear catchy beats that are just like every other pop song that do little more than provide a nice background to other things I happen to be doing. I feel little more emotion from the music beyond the general catchiness of the beat. When I listen to "boring artistic" music such as Dvorak, or Chopin, or Beethoven, I feel EMOTION. I can be calmed and suddenly jarred to life at the will of the composer through "boring artistic" music. I'd like to see Britney Spears even ATTEMPT to do that.

I believe the hugely talented and heavily marketed Britney summed it up very nicely. Pop music is "shit." /s

Five bucks says she confused artistic with autistic.
Seriously though, pop music is pretty hard to write. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to rehash the same beats over and over again, and come out with something that doesn't sound like every other song before it? Not easy.

Truth be told, many "pop" songs actually aren't badly written, just poorly produced. When you hear a rock group cover a pop song (ie Fountains of Wayne covering "Baby, one more time") you can see some of the merits of the songwriting. Problem is, that decent songs are ruined by shoddy producers whose musical talent lies solely in knowing how to use Pro Tools.
And btw, Sgt. Pepper may be considered "pop" now, but it certainly wasn't when it came out. I think what Britney is trying to say is that ANYONE can write "OK Computer" or "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots", but a song like "Lucky" comes around once in a lifetime....

2. it is easy to forget thingies like that, Sgt. Pepper was not considered pop, but there are artistic songs on it, and maybe they were sitting down. 3. yeah, imagine trying to write another song like the Spice Girls did. i really really really wanna zig-ah-zig-ah. they do NOT write 'em like that anymore!

You picked an extreme example with that Spice Girls song, though I could argue that in the right artist's hands, a Spice Girls song like "Goodbye" would be quite beautiful. Same with "I am Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera
