He has a drum set, but needs some work. Anyone recomend any books? Any websites?

I handed him a Led Zepp cd with moby dick on it,. and told him to listen to it but....

Simple set, bass, two Tom-Toms?, and a snare. Oh and a cymbol.

Hes been on em a lot lately, and I need something better to listen too.

Best way to get someone to learn an instrument....have him meet a friend of yours that plays drums too..if he has an idol that will work the best.

Regardless, I think he could be pretty good based on what Im hearing. Needs some work though.

um, buy him some lessons? 6 months worth should be enough. after that, if he has any real talent, he'll be able to learn on his own just by playing along with cds/mp3s.

at first, its best to give him easy stuff to play with, like say, most Stones tunes. or bad company. very basic rhythm in those as well.

later, as he improves you could give him the more complicated stuff, like Zep, the Who, Rush, etc.

I dont believe in books..the best way to learn to play drums is to meet up with someone who knows the drums and get hands on.

Yeah, a lot of Zeppelin stuff is rather hard to play. John Bonham was a damn good drummer, and some of his beats are quite difficult. Find something easy for him to play, and let him tool around with that for a while.

I've found that the best way to learn an instrument is to just play it....lessons are good for learning the basics....but if you're serious about becoming really good, with a style all your own....you just have to sit down a play...a lot.....and don't give up....be patient...and everything will work out

Good point about Bonzo. I didnt really think of that.

When I played trumpet, I had a few Loui Srmstrong cds, from which I would play snipets till I got them right.

Never got a whole song, but thats where I was comming from.

Bad co. and CCR huh? Never really listened to the drums in those. Ill let him know.

Ahhh, my older brother is a drummer, i offer my condolences, krwlz.

Playing along to cd's really helped my bro, as well as being in like 5 bands, he just got thrown right in and had to figure it all out by trial and error. He took lessons, but Sion is right, 6 months is fine. And just messing around for fun is usually helpful,

What YOU should do though, if he really gets into it, is buy earmuffs.

And learn drummer jokes. Those are good.

Speaking as a drummer, get some lessons. If you learn from someone else you learn the same basic washout rythems they know then everything you play is just a variation of the same pattern over and over. That does not equal talent, it equals repitition. You don't neccessairly have to get books but I recommend fundamental books to get the basics down, I.E just snare drum books. Learn concert techniques first, then switch over to Jazz, cause if you can play Jazz you can play anything.

I was completely self taught. I suppose it was lucky for me that my favourite bands at the time I first started playing were doing bare basics simple beats but solid as a rock. I used to listen to their tunes on my walkman and deconstruct the beat in my head. I'd know which hands were flying where and when. Then when I got on my kit I would kick it off with a few of these riffs I'd heard, and just play. See what happened.

Darren Jesse from Ben Folds Five has been a big influence on me. He plays pretty much any style you name.

When I first got my drumset, the neighbors who lived just outside my bedroom window bought central AC (after not having it for the entire...15 years I'd lived there) and never opened their windows again...


I found the best way to learn was one on one lessons, as everyone else has pretty much said. Check it out, ask around at music instrument shops etc, there will be some local drummers somewhere offering lessons.
