I was completely self taught. I suppose it was lucky for me that my favourite bands at the time I first started playing were doing bare basics simple beats but solid as a rock. I used to listen to their tunes on my walkman and deconstruct the beat in my head. I'd know which hands were flying where and when. Then when I got on my kit I would kick it off with a few of these riffs I'd heard, and just play. See what happened.
Darren Jesse from Ben Folds Five has been a big influence on me. He plays pretty much any style you name.
