who digs the bluegrass?
just curious...i think there was some tangential discussion of this focusing primarily on nickel creek about a year ago...but i re-found this earlier this morning and wanted to share it....which led to a general curiosity about how many other tfp'ers have the bluegrass bug?
Kenny Smith, Wyatt Rice, and David Grier. holy shit.

fly: search youtube for 'david grier' if you dig that bill cheatum cut...that dude can fucking play. i'm kind of hoping to use this thread to share different shit...i can't get enough of it. then again, i sort of grew up with it.
non traditional from david grier live cut from tony rice, mark o'connor, jerry douglass and sam bush same players, different live venue fly, i don't know if you know sam bush or not; he's the mando player in these last two. he's up your alley as far as character and so forth. do you have any of the acoustic stuff up on bluefly trio page? edit: missed bbtb's post: i can't even relate to that 'right setting' thing i can listen to bluegrass round the clock. wait, i pretty much do. i admit it, i'm a bluegrass whore.

just for you supple
quick things: if you're into yonder mountain, don't settle for less the live mountain tracks series. fucking amazing - they are definitely better live than on recording. if you're into nickel creek, you have to own chris thile's new 'solo' album (with noam pickelny on banjo...jesus that kid can play) and his previous solo album...can't recall the name of it, but you can tell it was a bunch of songs that nickel creek just wasn't appropriate for. now, since you asked: Dan Crary bryan sutton (w/ thile) a little more sutton / thile Tony Furtado fingerpicking slide but wait, he's really known as a banjo player. asshole! being so good. his album 'swamped' is out of control. ok, that's enough for now...i'll flood this thing. i heart youtube. edit: fuck it, i just found this: thought it was interesting.

i wouldn't really call brian setzer 'bluegrass,' so to speak...at least not the stuff of his i'm familiar with. i've usually heard it referred to as rockabilly / swing - regardless, i agree that dude can seriously play. totally badass...all the way from the stray cats and up. i'm sure he could put together some bluegrass work if he wanted to.

I grew up playing bluegrass fiddle. I don't play much anymore ... but I do enjoy translating a lot of the stuff I played on fiddle to piano.
My neighbor across the street used to play bass for John Hartford. His record collection is amazing. I love traditional bluegrass, and I love the new stuff coming out too. I also love the jazzy bluegrass that was hip for a while. Real ... reel? ... music. |

My exposure so far has been Nickel Creek and Strength in Numbers. I'll probably fill out my Watkins/Thile collection before looking onto other artists... though I'm wondering if there are any other 'impure' bluegrass acts that blend in folk and pop like Nickel Creek.

fta, yep deceiver is the one i was thinking of.
for other 'non-traditional' artists, off the top of my head i'd say: bela fleck and the flecktones tony furtado pyschograss leftover salmon old and in the way (jerry garcia, peter rowan, dave grisman, john kahn, and vasser clements) this sounds more traditional, but its a take on an old and in the way tune by psychograss: i can't say enough about tony rice...more traditional in his days with j.d. crowe circa the new south, all the way up to his more 'progressive' stuff like his album measure of time...now he's playing with peter rowan. tony more recently showing up some skill but doing this shit is why he became well known back in the 70's better link to some old tony

I get a little burned out on too much bluegrass, but I must say that I really enjoyed the Blueground Undergrass show that I went to a few months ago. Does that count? We get more into the Codetalkers and the like... that's more jam band stuff, I think.

for you elph:
which is [ youtube]g6LqX2v3lvY[ /youtube] where there's no spaces in the brackets, and the original link was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6LqX2v3lvY jet you're more than welcome. i'm also being selfish in that i get some new links, and i have a place to archive what i find so i don't have to look for it again. ok, another hero of mine: john hartford. w/ johnny cash on the grand ole opry. i think vasser clements in on the fiddle. he wrote gentle on my mind, which glen campbell made huge live version of his song steam powered aero plane, off the album of the same name. great fucking album. edit i'm adding these too so i won't have to look for them later

thanks to comrade pigglet, i think i can do this embedding operation.
i'm not really a bluegrass fan at all--i grew up with it, though, so i've listened to alot of it--but i also avoid it when i can. it's a string player music and i am not one. but once i was away from it for a while, i got to appreciate the care that the players who do it put into it. here are some of the things i kinda like... seldom scene back in the day, with john duffy. there's not much footage about of them, but there is this old chestnut: here's another old chestnut: stéphane grappelli with david grisman. i liked earlier grisman stuff quite alot--less and less as time went on. last things i heard had a truly miserable flute player. i dont this that jazz is as easy as some of these cats seem to think it is--but whatever, this stuff is grand: and for sentimental reasons, here's a clip of the horseflies. they are very very ithaca ny. and they only get to me live. so this:

hey roach...that's pretty sweet shit for a non bluegrass affectionado. good calls all the way around.
i sort of found a few more that i guess i'll post up here...but i think i'm going to overwhelm it soon. well, y'all can pick and choose. however, maybe you're thinking bluegrass is all about a bunch of misogynistic rednecks who beat their wimmens. well, maybe it is, but them wimmens also play some mighty fine music. first up, michelle shocked. these aren't so bluegrassy..but couldn't find that material on youtube. how about alison brown? rhonda vincent? and if mixed ever gets in here, she'd hurt me if i didn't include the oh my god awesome alison krauss.

ok so here are a few more treats:
earl scruggs & the byrds: flying burrito brothers: sin city ok so it's not bluegrass... this should make up for it: the stanley brothers and i figured the bluegrass guitarist light like ralph towner. this has nothing to do with anything--but he is a great player. give it a minute to get by the head, which is a little wimpy.

shit, i didn't know that about split lip derwood...like i said, i haven't been really following them. that sucks donkey balls.
as for the other...i hear you on the hayseed dixie. as for the gourds...they have mostly original material...i think they did that gin & juice cover as part of their live shows a long time ago as a funny crowd gimmick...and it just fucking caught on. i wouldn't really call their material bluegrass, actually - more along the lines of folk / acoustic rock that frequently features a mando. the first time i heard that cover, it was brilliant to me. now...its sometimes hard to listen to. ok, usually. ps and btw: you ever listen to the asylum street spankers? you might like them if you like split lip rayfield.

edit: ps, he's not bluegrass so i'm not linking him here, but have you checked out michael hedges?

I was neve a huge fan as a kid cuz it was "stupid country stuff". But as I started to actually play music, I realized the talent it took, and appreciated it more. Great links.
It's kinda funny because just the day I was poking around Borders and came across "Picking on Green Day" which is simply some Green Day songs made bluegrass. http://www.amazon.com/Green-Day-Blue.../dp/B0002MPQBE There are some samples on that page, and definitely worth the listen. I ended up picking up the CD and have been playing it non stop in my car =) |
