, yep deceiver is the one i was thinking of.
for other 'non-traditional' artists, off the top of my head i'd say:
bela fleck and the flecktones
tony furtado
pyschograss
leftover salmon
old and in the way (jerry garcia, peter rowan, dave grisman, john kahn, and vasser clements)
this sounds more traditional, but its a take on an old and in the way tune by psychograss:
i can't say enough about tony rice...more traditional in his days with j.d. crowe circa the new south, all the way up to his more 'progressive' stuff like his album
measure of time
...now he's playing with peter rowan.
tony more recently showing up some skill
but doing this shit is why he became well known back in the 70's
