quick things: if you're into yonder mountain, don't settle for less the live mountain tracks series. fucking amazing - they are definitely better live than on recording.

if you're into nickel creek, you have to own chris thile's new 'solo' album (with noam pickelny on banjo...jesus that kid can play) and his previous solo album...can't recall the name of it, but you can tell it was a bunch of songs that nickel creek just wasn't appropriate for.

i wouldn't really call brian setzer 'bluegrass,' so to speak...at least not the stuff of his i'm familiar with. i've usually heard it referred to as rockabilly / swing - regardless, i agree that dude can seriously play. totally badass...all the way from the stray cats and up. i'm sure he could put together some bluegrass work if he wanted to.

I grew up playing bluegrass fiddle. I don't play much anymore ... but I do enjoy translating a lot of the stuff I played on fiddle to piano.

My neighbor across the street used to play bass for John Hartford. His record collection is amazing.

I love traditional bluegrass, and I love the new stuff coming out too. I also love the jazzy bluegrass that was hip for a while.

My exposure so far has been Nickel Creek and Strength in Numbers. I'll probably fill out my Watkins/Thile collection before looking onto other artists... though I'm wondering if there are any other 'impure' bluegrass acts that blend in folk and pop like Nickel Creek.

for other 'non-traditional' artists, off the top of my head i'd say:

bela fleck and the flecktones
tony furtado
pyschograss
leftover salmon
old and in the way (jerry garcia, peter rowan, dave grisman, john kahn, and vasser clements)

this sounds more traditional, but its a take on an old and in the way tune by psychograss:




i can't say enough about tony rice...more traditional in his days with j.d. crowe circa the new south, all the way up to his more 'progressive' stuff like his album measure of time...now he's playing with peter rowan.

i'm not really a bluegrass fan at all--i grew up with it, though, so i've listened to alot of it--but i also avoid it when i can. it's a string player music and i am not one. but once i was away from it for a while, i got to appreciate the care that the players who do it put into it.

as for the other...i hear you on the hayseed dixie. as for the gourds...they have mostly original material...i think they did that gin & juice cover as part of their live shows a long time ago as a funny crowd gimmick...and it just fucking caught on. i wouldn't really call their material bluegrass, actually - more along the lines of folk / acoustic rock that frequently features a mando. the first time i heard that cover, it was brilliant to me. now...its sometimes hard to listen to. ok, usually.

ps and btw: you ever listen to the asylum street spankers? you might like them if you like split lip rayfield.

I was neve a huge fan as a kid cuz it was "stupid country stuff". But as I started to actually play music, I realized the talent it took, and appreciated it more. Great links.

It's kinda funny because just the day I was poking around Borders and came across "Picking on Green Day" which is simply some Green Day songs made bluegrass.
