How bad of an idea is this...
I am planning on turbocharging my two stroke weed whacker. It seems like just some fun project and if it worked I could kick the shit out of some weeds. What I am asking is, is it possible to get a turbo or even make one that is small enough to fit onto my weedwhacker engine? It's 22 CI's I think. I've got an extra so breaking it is not an issue.

That will be tough trying to find a turbo that small.....i'm thinking of turboing my motorcycle myself.

Don't feel crazy ickma, I have been thinking about something quite similar for a bit. Turbo charging a Toro lawnmower. I want the light weight of a 5.5hp Kawi, but with the power of the 18 horsers on the Z mowers. Biggest problem has been finding a turbo small enough. Those little engines just don't move much air.
Your weedwacker is probably 22 cc's. 22 cid would be hard to hold, thats 1/4th the size of the engine in my Toyota. |

First off you have to find a turbo. Then you have to figure out a way to cool it. Then you have to fab all the custom parts. Then you have to hope it doesn't explode. Twould be awesome if it worked, but have fun!

What would be the point? It wouldn't make it any better on the other end. It's goverened to a certain engine (and shaft) speed. All you might do is get it to full speed faster - and that's assuming turbo lag is shorter than the time it takes to get it to full speed now.

A daihatsu in Australia used a really small IHI turbo. It was a three cylinder econo-box. Start scouring google and ebay and it should turn some stuff up.
Also, there is a turbocharged barstool out there, Im pretty sure it uses a tiny turbo. That would be a good place to look. |

Yeah..pressurizing the crankcase would be a bad idea on the really cheap 2 stroke weedwhips...due that the seal some of the bottom ends with a plastic cover....

This was accomplished by creating the world's smallest turbocharger unit, boasting a scant, 2-inch-diameter turbine capable of spinning at a stratospheric 200,000 rpm to produce maximum boost of 18.5psi and goose the normally aspirated CX's peak horsepower from 50 to 82bhp at 8,000 rpm. You you need to find one of these 2" turbos off of a '82 Honda CX500 turbo. -SF Actually, I'd use this turbo on one of those 2-cycle scooters! The turbo would help you get up to max rpm faster, that'd be one hell of a little scooter! |

If you attached a drill for the "turbo" it would then be closer to a "Supercharger". One of the big problems there is regulating the speed of the drill to the motor. I have also never seen a turbocharged or supercharged two stroke. I think this may be the stoper for you. Two stroke motors are very finicky on exhaust and intake pressures. I do know that if you start messing with the exhaust on a two stroke bike you can really mess it up. Don't give up. People with difficult or impossible dreams are the sparks to great inventions.

hi im new here,
i have found this site from google and i have Built a turbocharged go kart.(almost finished and its in the Testing stages) engine type: Victa @ stroke 150cc engine (now 169cc modifications are:-bigger carburetor -oversized piston to 040" -Fule pump The turbo is from a Subaru foresta (TF035Hm) custom made manifold, here is a link to the engine two weeks ago, i will post new pick of the engine Last edited by 2-stroke turbro; 05-26-2005 at 12:27 AM.. |
