Dodge

What do you think of Dodge? I don't care if you love it or hate it. I'm actually a Honda/Toyota guy but now finding myself in a career selling Dodge.

Personally I'm pissed that they don't offer green for every vehicle. What do you think?

Well.. the Magnum *concept* looked good. That's about the only positive thought I have for the entire Daimler-Chrysler company.

I wasn't happy when they sold out to Daimler. I was even less happy when all their designers quit after the sellout. For awhile there, Chrysler was coming out with some kick ASS designs - the PT Cruiser (reliable or not, the design is a major hit), the 300M, even their minivans looked good for a minivan. Now their cars are getting ugly again and the reliability isn't any better. You can get away with ugly if it's reliable (see: Corolla) and you can get away with unreliable if it's great looking (see: older Jaguars) but you can't get away with an ugly AND unreliable car.

The new Magnum + new headlights and a small front fascia adjustment = Magnum concept. Heck, if they changed the headlights alone I'd be pretty darn happy with it.
As for the rest of their lineup, their R/T packages, especially for the Stratus Coupe, look great. And the SRT-4 and Viper are amazingly cars IMHO.
However, their normal lineup is a bit bland for my tastes, and the reliability can be a bit spotty by what I've seen.

I have my opinions of Dodge with my Dodge "The Disaster" Dakota. The truck was traded in, and hopefully destroyed. I had problems from the get-go with the keyless entry, all the way to walking outside and the truck woulden't start with 13,000 miles on it. Computer in the truck died, I'll stop my rant.

Bottom line. Dodge sucks, reliability and build quality is crappy, and dealing with they're policies and warrenties proved to be a bigger task then going to the proctologist. Never again will I buy a Dodge, unless I need a truck to tow somthing. But I'm not towing any skyscrapers anytime soon, so I don't need a Cummings Diesel.

IMO - You can make good money selling the third rate machines. The quality and reliability are not even close to a Toyota/Honda/etc...

The Cummins engine and the new RAM are huge sellers here.

They'd be a lot more reliable if they would get their trannys sorted out, particularly the automatics in their neons and PT's.

Other than that, their concept cars are decent and a lot of people seem to be favoring their styling lately.

I've owned 3 Dodge cars, and knock on wood, all have been fine. My brand new shadow lasted 140000, replaced tires once, and brakes twice. The head gasket blew, but that was under warranty. My Intrepid has been fine. I love the Magnum's look, and the new 300M. Not that I would buy them, I think my next car will be a honda.

I'm not a big fan of them. My first experience with one was one of their Aries models. My sister bought it brand new and the quality was terrible. Certainly you don't expect world class quality from a cheap car but to have the moldings coming off after less than 20k miles, dashboard and other coverings peeling from weak glue, etc, etc, etc it doesn't inspire confidence. The car only lasted about 75k miles before it needed major work and was gotten rid of.

My next experience was with a Dodge Avenger. It was the first new car I bought completely on my own. I loved the style and the reviews of it at the time (second year of production) were still good. This car also lasted only about 80k miles. In less than 2k miles the car began randomly dying while driving. In the shop several times with no explanation. Finally it left me stranded at about 3k miles in the worst snow storm of the last 8 years when the computer died. At 40k miles the transmission blew with some rod flying through the side of the case leaving me without transmission fluid. At about 60k miles the head gasket went. I got rid of the car at about the 70k mile mark and it wasn't worth shit in the used car market.

I now own a Dodge Ram 1500. Bought it used with 136k miles on it because it was relatively cheap. It's serving me well as a second vehicle used mostly to plow my driveway.

With Daimler now owning them I don't think I'll be buying a new Dodge anytime soon.

I've got a Honda as my primary car and will likely stick with them as the resale and quality are way too favorable when compared to American cars.

I'm not the biggest fan of them....i've worked on many older small block dodges, 318's, 340's, 360's....Back then in the 70's and 60's dodge was really quirky about having thousands of different bracket combinations.......I do vouch against there transmissions. My dad owns a 1994 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and we are on our 5th transmission. (we finally got a transmission that would finally last a good jasper remanufactured one ) I know alot of the intrepids have had tranny problems and my friends first gen eclipse has had some problems. Like any brand of car they have their high and their lows.

My father has a 94 dodge dakota. Bought it brand new. 260,000 miles - no engine or transmission rebuilds. Manual transmission - hasn't even needed a clutch. Oil changed regularly, but no maintenance other than necessary fluids and greased suspension fittings.

Body and interior have had no maintenance whatsoever. This vehicle has been used to tow small campers on 6000 mile road trips ( he drives from kentucky to montana every two years or so for the hell of it)

It has had the following repairs (non-maintenance)

- Alternator ( $250 )
- Catalytic converter clogged ( removed )
- 1 replacement battery ($60)
- Water pump replaced ( due to a leaking gasket, actual pump probably didn't need replaced ) $150

The only other thing he had to do was replace some front suspension components from one too many times being run into a ditch on our dangerous 1 lane rural roads.

I would not buy a Dodge unless I was looking for a Viper or Diesel Truck. If I ever get a truck, it will be a Dodge Cummings Turbo Diesel. Right now, I cannot afford a Viper, but would love to have one. The only other American cars I want are either a corvette or a Saleen S7. 2 out the 4 American Cars I would consider buying are from Dodge, not too bad.

I tested out the new Durango Limitied HEMI this weekend. I am on the fence with the looks. The power was nice, had nice acceleration for a big truck. Sheesh, the thing runs 15's in the qtr.(fastest in class) The Cayenne only beats it by .02 secs. Would def need to throw on some meats and some new wheels to make this thing look a little better..... I am curious about the Magnum as well. The 300's are different. They look money that is for sure. Are they worth the low asking price however?

Damn, you should hear me talking shit to the Caravan's transmission and torque converter. ("6000 RPM! TRANSFER SOME FUCKING POWER YOU STUPID FUCK, EVER HEARD OF STALL SPEED?." and "SHIFT UP, MOTHERFUCKER!")

I know I'll get dirty looks for this, but I love the designs Dodge has out now, with only mixed feelings for the Neon SRT-4.

I think Dodge has been really good with styling over the last 8 to 10 years. Their full size truck style redefined the truck market. The spaciousness of their cars has been very impressive. If they could get the mechanicals to match the style I'd probably buy from them again.

I know a guy that works at a Dodge Dealership and he says the 300 is damn nice car just the engine revs way to high before it shifts...like 7,000 rpm..should be shifting at 4 or 4500 rpm.

Well i have very limited experience with Dodges. But the Caravan we had, while a POS, never had any problems except for the paint ( but who didn't then?) and the auto tranny. I will never ever ever own a dodge again with an auto. Or at least a FWD auto. I think by the time we got rid of it, we had the tranny in to get fixed 8 or 9 times, and we were on our 4 or 5th physcally new/reman'd transmission. Incredibly smooth, but a pile of crap.

The engine was incredible. That 3.3L v6 just took a beating all day long and kept going. Not powerful enough for the car, but the engine was still pretty good.

I'll budge. Shit I'll give you the special TFP forum discount. The trick with dealers is two parts (I'm still learning this part):

1) Have good credit
2) Put at least 10% down.

There's something else I'm learning about... Dealership loyalty and the strive to be number one. Go to the Number One dealer in your area and tell the general manager that your (brother, sister, mom or dad) has bought from them before and that you are a referall customer because they were treated well by them. You might be able to get some sort of special deal from the dealer on a car. Keep in mind that the hot ticket items (i.e. cars that they can sell anyways for a higher price) might not be negotiable. I'll bet the Number One dealer will make a deal anyways just to move inventory.

If you are talking about your avg run-of-the-mill HDTV set for $2,500, no I don't haggle, there is not overhead in this product as a new vehicle. No comparisson between the two.

Yeah, you see -you are expecting to not pay anything and leave with a vehicle. In most states there is something called a lemon law. This means that you can just return a car within a set amount of time from it's original purpose. For all they know in the dealership -you are just some guy who wants to drive around in a new car for a week and then turn it in... "Thanks but no thanks".

You wondered why they wouldn't give you the real price which is probably 30K... It's because without any cash down you just aren't a serious buyer.
