I saw a Bentley Continental GT on the way in to work this morning
http://kelston.org.uk/assets/images/...-_1024x768.jpg |
Just saw a Mercedes Benz 190E 2.3-16. Those cars are almost as cool as the original BMW M3's
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...nz190e2316.jpg They don't look fast, but 0-60 in 7.5 seconds back in 1985 was blazing and they did give BMW a run for their money in DTM racing. |
At my old work i saw:
Lambo Gallardo Aston DB7 Aston V8 Vantage (new one) Bently GT (they suck, get an Aston DB9) Rolls Royce (no clue which one) Bently Arnage Many many old Jaguar XK's A couple of new Jag XK's The above racing Merc Hard top & Convertable BMW M3's BMW M5 BMW M6 I missed the Aston DB9 because i was on the crapper (dangit) Ford Mustang (rare over here) CL600 (new one, brand spanking 2007 plate) SL55 SL63 CLS 63 (mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...sexy) Several other AMG Mercs And many others which i will update at a later date |
I just walked past a GM Suburban that said "Powered by Ethanol"
NYPD vehicle... never seen one before. |
The XJ220 Jag is very rare, so even though this one is in a local dealer's showroom (Algar - Rosemont PA, Ferrari/Alfa dealer) I'm posting it anyway ...not to mention it's sitting next to an F40 so how often do you see those next to each other? Not to mention, the Porsche Carrera GT that I reported on page three of this thread was sitting in their customer parking area:

Nice....
this afternoon in the West Village, Ferrari 430 Spyder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...manu_06_08.jpg |
a nice weekend for car spotting in NYC...
I saw a Nissan Skyline GT-R in Chinatown. |

Saw a whole semi full of VWs in Perkins, Oklahoma but what really caught my eye was the R32 sitting on top pretty badass little car.
http://www.carpages.co.uk/volkswagen...f_10_08_05.jpg There was also a Yellow Gli Fahrenheit and an Orange Gti Fahrenheit (just found out only 1200 will be made in the orange and yellow each). It was a colorful car hauler for sure. |
That yellow and orange colorful hauler comment by Cycler reminded me that I've spotted the O-so-rare Oscar Meyer Weinermobile a couple times around this area in the last two years:

What a great weekend to be car spotting....
Friday night was a great one all in the Greenwich Village standing at 6th Avenue and 3rd Street in front of the IFC Theater. Lotus Exige Aston Martin DB9 Coupe Ferrari 430 Sypder this time in blue Ford Excursion Limo Yesterday in SoHo on the way home... Lamborghini Murciélago Black almost forgot, and this morning I saw that same Nissan Skyline GT-R I saw in Chinatown the other week as I walked to the office |
Just my somewhat tilted discussion about "rare cars":
The title of this thread is "Rare Car Sightings" and I'm not trying to nitpick all the very cool car sightings reported here since I greatly enjoy checking them out on a regular basis and posting some myself. But I was thinking about how "rare" sightings depend on location and perspective. However, in the long run, rare really depends on the total number sold or still in existence. One thing that made me consider this is that the sporty car I drive is actually more "rare" than many of the exotic but not-so-rare cars reported here. In the U.S. there were about a total of 7000 Toyota Supra turbo models sold from 1993 to 1998 when sales stopped. Of those, about 4000 had the 6 speed transmission like mine, the rest were auto trans. This probably accounts for why I see more Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, etc. than Supras. For comparison, this is a production note I found about the Aston Martin DB9 comparing it to the Ferrari F430 and 911 Turbo Porsche: "...As of 2004 production is expected be up to five thousand units a year which is roughly the same as its rivals, in particular the Ferrari F430 and Porsche 911 Turbo..." I also found this statistic in a discussion about the release of the Ferrari F430, the numbers refer to the 360 model: "...Since 1999, more than 17,000 Berlinettas, Spiders and Challenge Stradales have rolled off the Maranello assembly line. So the F430, whose first-year worldwide production of 2000 cars is already spoken for, has some big Italian loafers to fill..." From what I can find, it seems that there have been over 2500 Lamborghini Murciélagos sold so far, and well over 3000 Gallardos. As for the Bentley GT, most of Bentley's current production is the GT but all I could find was this about total Bentley production: nearly 9000 units in 2006. Hey, I'm not bashing any of these other cool cars. If anybody wants to trade a "not so rare" Ferrari F430 or Bentlety GT for my "rare" Supra, please PM me real soon ;) |
Yes, the other night, I saw a rare car...
a cherry AMC Eagle Wagon... except it was blue http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...agle_wagon.jpg |
I saw a Shelby GT-H mustang today. Not the old ones, but the new ones, and this one was a droptop. Didn't know they made convertible versions of it.
This car is so rare I couldn't even Google up a picture of a droptop GT-H. |
I'm batting 2 for 2 when it comes to Shelby Mustang convertibles. This time it was a black '66 at a corner in Hoboken. I wish I had my camera for this one, it was so beautiful.

In 15 years of production, less than 9000 NSXs were brought into the country. We've been having a discussion over at NSXPrime, trying to guesstimate how many might survive today. Most agree the number is surely under 7000 now but there's no way to know for sure. It seems like equal numbers become track rats versus garage queens. |
bodypainter,
Your NSX is another example of an actual rare car, as opposed to something that some people just don't see too often. Your number crunching made me look into mine, too. My black '95 Supra turbo 6 speed with sport roof is one of 145 sold with that combination in 1995, mine is number 91. In 1995 there were a total of 526 turbo 6 speed sport roof models sold in the U.S. In the Supra community we also talk about how many are still left, how many are trashed or butchered to shame. No actual pics of the sighting, but yesterday driving with my kids a couple blocks from our home I look over in surprise and say to my older boy who's been a sort of car nut since he was 2 yrs old "do you know what that is?" and he confidently says "wow, dad, that's a Maybach!". I thought I'd stump him on that but nooooo ;) It was "just" a 57S like this ...rolling jewelry: http://images.worldcarfans.com/photo...01/1015big.jpg |
I found another goodie. A Studebaker Avanti. Pics coming this afternoon.

Yesterday on my way home from work ~5:30pm on the PA Turnpike westbound around Ft. Washington, I see a car carrier truck ahead of me in the center lane with some suspiciously interesting looking lights on a couple cars loaded on it. So I suddenly remember that my digital camera is in the car and I'm fantasizing what a great post this would be at TFP and I'm fumbling for the cam, get it out and turn it on, didn't go on so I turn it on again, just then the truck pulls into the right hand lane and with all the traffic around I didn't want to slow down too much so I just had to pass it. Soooo.... you'll just have to take my word for it but the top car on back was a Ferrari Testarossa of the more recent variety exactly like this:
http://www.fantasycars.com/derek/car...starossa_1.jpg Under the TR was a more common but still quite nice and interesting Ferrari 360 Modena in an interesting blue/gray color. Also on the trailer was a Viper GTS, a BMW Z3 of some sort, some kind of moded looking Honda S2000, and an older Corvette. |

I also saw a Bentley Continental GT the other day and I almost threw up. No car exists that is worse than a Bentley, imho.
|
I don't know what to make of your comment, willravel, because I like the Bentley GT's. I can see getting one someday when they depreciate to my budget ...which I think they actually have a good chance of doing, since there are so many around and they get a bad rap for being so popular with sports, rap, and other "stars". But once that image problem blows over, I'd drive one with pleasure. Of course I like the big 4 door Bentleys and RR's too so maybe we're just on different pages with these cars.
|
Like I said, imho. A lot of people love Bentleys, and I respect that. I personally think they are the Escalade of the ultra luxury car world. They're too common, they aren't worth a fraction of what they cost, and they're cheesy. If you're throwing $170,000 down for a car, I'm getting something that has subtle elegance and class. I don't want something that commonly gets Giovanni rims and leopard print. You can get a DB9 or a fully loaded CL Class with that kind of cash, and you'll be getting a much better car. Again, imho.

these are what I call rare cars,if you missed my post.....

A couple days ago I saw another Amphicar driving thru our neighborhood ...it's one of those strangely cute/odd little cars with propellers on back that can drive right into the water and boat-around. I hear they are quite rare but due to a local collection of Amphicar collectors around Philadelphia there seems to be a larger number here than in most areas.

^^ Boy that brings back some memories. When I was a kid, my parents had a vacation place on a lake and the family next door had one of those cars. That used to be the highlight of the trip when we'd get to cross the lake in the car. Good times!
|
Well, no pics of the Avanti, unfortunately, the one shot I took didn't come out right.
But I did see a '64 Corvette convertible cruising top down along the New Jersey Turnpike. I think those 'vettes are the epitome of automotive coolness. |
QM,
do you know if it was an "original" Avanti or one of the later versions? Unless you really know the car, it's kind of hard to tell. Here's a pic of an original and a nice page showing the chronology of the Avanti: http://www.theavanti.com/services_chronology.htm http://www.theavanti.com/images/optional.jpg |
I bet there's not a lot of these driving around. Philadelphia has a couple that are used for sightseeing tours around town.

saw the weiner mobile a week or so ago on the highway, see ford gt's almost every day (very popular with the ballers in augusta), saw a gallardo a few days ago, went to the this female friend of mine's house today, she has a '93 Cobra R and a '95 Cobra R, both of which are NHRA Super Stock cars

there's a ton of those in Boston, they used them for the parade when the Red Sox won the World Series, or the "Rolling Rally." supposedly they made over 20,000 of them. In a way you're right, compared to how many were made there can't be many remaining, but I guess the same can be said for any WWII era vehicle. |

maybe like this? |
saw a nice Lotus Esprit today, like this one, but black. Pulled up next to it at a stoplight and it sounded a lot better than i expected, but still not a "supercar sound." I think they look better in person, more exotic somehow.

I'm not so sure how rare it is but a buddy of mine owns this 80 Lotus Esprit - kinda cool.

Hi Guy's Some Great Car's,
How do I post an image of a car too ? ..Do I just click and drag the image over ? |
KKB,
as far as I know, you have to either save the pic to your own online photo storage site (free at places like photobucket or imagestation) and then you can include it in a post, or if the pic is already somplace online, you can just imbed the link to the pic in your post to show the pic, using that little square icon in the "quick reply" window below; if you run your cursor over that icon, it should show "insert image", so if you click it, a window will open where you can insert the link to the pic. |
sounds a bit complex
|
Nice Lotus Esprit...great looking, odd color. Lamborghini diablo or gallardo or something else 1st below. You have to be a moron to drive something like this on these crappy, potholed michigan roads.

I haven't gotten the pics off my boy's cell phone camera yet, but we were on vacation in Ocean City MD last week and in addition to all the normal pesky gulls we saw, we also saw other gulls, like a Lambo Countach that was pretty much just like this one:
http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-19...n-Doors-st.jpg Then a few yards away outside a little "car museum" on Rt. 50 we saw a DeLorean DMC-12 just like this one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...3/IMG_9979.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...3/IMG_9992.jpg Also parked outside the little museum was an early '60's Corvair like this one: http://www.corvair.org/images/60sedan.gif and we also saw a real cool antique fire truck and a great looking old passenger bus that looked something like one of those old Airstream trailers, but I can't remember the name on front of the bus. |
