Rare Car Sightings

So, I was driving on the 405 yesterday, and I came upon a car that I had neer seen before.. I got closer to look at the emblem..

Maybach!

I trailed it for several miles.. it had no other markings. I looked it up just now.. it's a Maybach 57. The model right below the famed executive Maybach 62.

On a side note, not-so-rare car sighting, I also drove by Cedric The Entertainer while we were in a traffic jam. He was driving a G35 Sedan.

Seen a couple ferraris. Nice, but not all that impressive just to see on the road.

Not the best car, but looks pretty sweet. The other day me and my brother chased around a DeTomaso Pantera. Definately a sexy beast.

Except it didn't have hte wing, and the engine/air cleaner stuck up and took up almost the entire rear window.

this may sound crazy, but i had a neighbor who lived just a few houses down from me that had TWO of those. both were a bright yellow. i often heard him start them up, but never take them out on the road. and then one day, they were both just gone, and he had a brand new Stang Cobra and a BMW Z3.

My mom's cousin drives his Bentley to work, and I drive past his house on the way to work, so I see it every so often. I also saw 2 Dodge Vipers on Saturday, though they'd classify as semi-rare.

I got a lift home from the Kitchen nightclub in the back of Bono's Bristol Blenheim 3 once. Long story... Does that count? They're pretty expensive, hand-built luxury cars from the UK. Around US$220,000 for current model I think.

If not, then a few Lambourghini Countachs and more Ferraris than you can shake a stick at. And of course, the usual Aussie classic grunt cars (the old style Ford V8 GTO's, Torannas etc).

Finally, my XR-6 Turbo is not exactly rare, but it's a big powerful car that not many people seem to have here in Sydney.

Didn't Bart Simpson once steal Hitler's car? Heh...

Vipers only qualify as sem-rare if you live in Cali and actually SEE Maybachs on the road. In the midwest, things are different.

Saw a new Viper yesterday, first new one I've seen on the road. Damn H2s are everywhere though.

Since I live by Ford World HQ I see quite a few rare cars on the road. Recently I have been seeing the new Ford GT. It looks awesome but surprisingly small.

Yeah, at least in southern california, you hardly even look twice if you see a viper. Head down to an autocross event and you see a half dozen or so of them sometimes, Porsches out the wazoo, NSXs ( usually 2 down there), and the odd ferrari, and i think once there was a lambo.

As for luxory cars, many rolls-royce are to be seen, bentleys are rarer, but still on occasion you can catch one.

Then you ought to ask the DeTomaso designers to come on down for a slapping. It is my understanding that the GT5 came stock with those.

"The GT5 model was introduced in 1980, and it featured much-revised "ground effects" bodywork, including a deep front air dam with integral driving lights, rocker panel extensions, flared wheel arches and a deck lid-mounted "delta" wing spoiler. The GT5 was augmented in 1985 with the introduction of the GT5-S. The GT5-S represented the first significant body redesign of the Pantera since its introduction, which included new, wider flared front and rear fenders, side air intake grilles and a further revised front fascia." - from PanteraClub.com

When I went down to Destin for spring break I probably saw approximately 20-30 H2s or more. They were everywhere. Although I did see 1 H1 down there and then an H1 back up in St. Louie a few days ago.

A rather new viper pulled up to Pizza Hut a couple nights back.
Down my street is a 56 or 57 chevy something, very nice looking and I imagine rather rare.

On a nice day you can drive to DC and see people out cruising in their cars: Ferraris, SL 55s, M5s, 911 Turbos, Maseratis, etc. I went to a club downtown last year and two friends were hanging out in the parking lot with their twin NSX's, one red and one yellow. Saw another NSX a couple weeks ago near Tyson's Corner, for those familiar with NoVA. My last Ferrari was about a month ago, a 575M. A friend of mine whose dad is a cardiologist just last summer sold his Testarossa so he could buy an SL55 AMG. The friend himself had a Camaro SS 30th Anniversary Edition and a Trans Am 30th Anniversary Edition. A Lotus Esprit lives down the street from my house. There was a Viper RT/10 on campus last week.
You can see pretty much any kind of sports car around here, but you don't see the rare luxury cars like Rolls or Bentley. But sports cars, yes. The abundance is thanks to the Ferrari/Maserati dealership and the Porsche dealership at Tyson's, which got one of the first new 911 Turbos.
Hal, your TL was everywhere here as soon as it hit the U.S. How common are they where you are?

Perhaps the funniest Ferrari sighting I saw was a Ferrari 355 parked on the lawn in front of a hardware store with a "For Sale" sign on it. Only in the Hamptons....

TL's are common even in Alaska, it's a mainstream car. Going to be pretty common everywhere, nice nontheless..

We don't have alot of rare cars around up here, but about a month ago the Bentley Continental GT's were up here for cold weather testing. Which happens pretty often.

Coolest car I've seen up here, would probably be a 660HP Lingenfelter Vette, and yes, it's the real deal. The rarest car, I've seen a TVR 440 R. Most amazing car I've ever seen.

I have not seen this one yet and probably never will, due to the fact that Maserati is only making 12 of them in 2004.

A person in my parent's neighborhood has an ultima gtr. It has a roughly 450 hp 350 v8. The car looked great. Autocrosses are fun places to see different cars. for instance, an old dodge omni glhs turbo with about 330 hp that was used for the one lap of america years ago. Also a couple of super sevens modeled off the old lotus. A lotus europe(the handling on that car is incredible). My wife's uncle went from a porsche 911 to a dodge viper for two years to an audi tt when they just came out, to a bmw m5. His workshop had an old wood framed mg that he was going to restore for the retired executive of Aetna.

Damn that Alaska pipeline. The 04 TL is still pretty rare around where I live despite it being a rather upscale area, but I remember seeing a few of them when I went to Long Beach. I know of only one within a mile of me, so I'm still happy.

There are 2 NSX owners that live in my neighborhood... at a side glance, I always mistake them for corvettes for some reason.

God I hated that about the small town in Maryland where I grew up. You couldn't spit without hitting a Grand Am or a Cavalier. And everyone thought they were the most badass cars to ever exist. A brand new Grand Am was regarded as a status symbol, much like a Lexus would be in civilized areas.

There are a lot of neat cars here in Florida. I see Vettes all the time, the occasional Viper, a lot of old restored convertibles, the occasional Ferrari, etc.

The ultimate, though, was when I worked in Northern Virgnia near Tysons Corner. That place was just nuts. I commonly saw Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Porsches, Ferraris, etc. BMWs and Benzes were as common as Fords and Toyotas elsewhere.

I actually saw a crappy Ferrari 308 this morning on the way to school. As far as rare because they're new, I saw a Chevy SSR and the new BMW 545 yesterday, that beemer looks awesome, and the SSR looked a little bigger than I was expecting.

castex - ditto, the 308 is gorgeous.

The older Ferraris are sexy in a way the new ones can't even begin to be (currently ones don't have the curves that a sexy italian car needs).

I'd love to have one of the Italian market-only 208s - its similar to the 308/328, but with a 2 liter V8 turbo (300+ brake, designed to fit into some tax bracket).

rareties I've seen here in the south of England :

New Bentley GT coupe (awesome - looks like a solid slab of metal)
Various lambos
New SL500 (very nice ride)
Plenty of RX8s - nice, but the RX7 is still one of the best looking cars out of Japan (looks much better than the NSX IMHO).

And a few Suzuki Capuccinos (cute, but way too small).
