Sinus rinse kits
Has anyone here ever used one? I seem to be having an awful time with my sinuses the last several months and I now have a cold I cant get rid off completely (I've had this one since december 12th) it goes from my head to my chest and now its back to my head....Im so congested even my teeth hurt and makes eating a nightmare cause of the pain.
My mother swears by these things, she had to use one after her sinus surgery last year, and says that it even helps with cold congestion. Right now the grocery store pharmacy is holding one for me to come pick up but I was wondering if anyone here has used them and is as in love with them as my mother is.

I was looking at them in the drug store yesterday -- in between coughing spells, sneezing, sweating and shivering... and decided that I couldn't intentionally push liquid up my nose.. I'm with ya on the teeth aching thing...
however.. thera flu and alka seltzer plus aren't doing the job..

Blech. I tried to use them, but I ended up without any help and in worse pain afterwards because of how it affected my ears.
I know I say this a lot, but if you've having constant sinus issues you should see an allergist or an ear-nose-and-throat doctor who may be able to help. I wasn't actually helped with my problems (I had constant sinusitis) until I saw an allergist and had some CT scans of my sinuses and all. Personally using the sinus rinse kits, it would work in cleaning some stuff out of my nose, but the fact that it would get into my ea rs and cause me intense pain made it pointless for me. Honestly, though, they're fairly inexpensive so trying it for a few days may be worth it for you.

yes the directions state specifically not to use it if you are having ear problems, which Im not
I cant use nasal sprays cause they make me gag and throw up, (neither can my mother) but since this doesnt go down your throat (you squirt it up one nostril and it drips out the other) she says its not hard to bear doing it. Her ENT is the one that has had her doing it so Im taking his advice to her as my own since it wont really hurt anything (so long as I dont develop an ear infection)

Im so tired of taking medicine I could scream...daytime stuff doesnt do jack crap for me...it only works if its the drowsy formula, which of course I cant take and work. Im desperate for anything at the moment so squirting this up my nose cant be any worse than what Im going thru now, specially since it drains OUT not down the back of my throat

Well, I wasn't having ear problems at the time; that unfortunately developed after using the sinus rinse.
Like most people when I first did it I was a little bit weirded out about spraying water up into my nostrils, and it's oddly not that bad (except for my ear problem), but all you're doing is leaning over and tilting your head back which closes the sinuses from your throat and it's oddly cleansing to feel your sinuses filling up with water and then having it come out the other nostril. It's especially fun when you're in front of a mirror.

My wife uses a nettie pot. You don't squirt water; rather, you actually pour a saline solution in one nostril and it runs out the other. she swears by it. And no ear problems, either, I guess because there is no pressure going on.

I just want to say 24 hours later....this thing still kicks ass...my ears have not clogged up again...I STILL have not sneezed one time...my teeth (with the exception of the one I have to have pulled friday because of pain) DONT hurt, my eyes dont feel like they are bugging out of my head, and my cheeks dont hurt. Still have an awful sore throat but the pain from the congestion pressure is completely gone (and I only used it yesterday)
Mal if your'e still feeling bad I highly suggest you getting one...it feels a little wierd the first time since you dont know what to expect but it doesnt make you feel like you're drowning like I thought it would

Tilted
|
I tried it also and it seemed to help at first. But then I started using it more and more because it unclogged my ears. I even turned my head way back and got some stuff way into my ear canal, or so it seemed. The pain was excruciating. My head and ears crackled and I stopped using it. I have found a nasal spray called SinoFresh. I use it ONLY to get rid of moldy dust that I sometimes inhale accidentally. It works really well. It's different that Afrin in that you just use it til you get that stuff out of your sinuses. To me it beats going to an ENT because they always want to do sinus surgery. Blah

just cause IM stupid Im gonna ask...why would you have tilted your head back when the instructions specifically tell you not to do that so that it stays away from your ears and to make sure your head is tilted as far forward as is comfortable?

Well, i was diagnosed with sinusitis about 6 years ago...
Something i use on a daily basis is a home remedy i got from Dr. Weil's webpage http://www.drweil.com/u/Home/index.html I use about 1 cup lukewarm tap water with about half table spoon of salt (like the kind you use for cooking, normal table salt) I rise with it by cupping my hands and sucking it through my nose etc. I usually get about 3-4 rinses for each cup of water/salt mixture. It helps me quite a bit ... give that a whirl when you don't feel like using the rinse anymore sweetpea

ehhh...no thanks lol I like having the salt and baking soda in pre measured packets to put in a bottle that I can force up my nose.....sucking it out of my hands sounds a lot messier lol besides its only 10 bucks for the whole starter kit with comes with 50 premeasured salt packets and the refills are even cheaper than that

Neti pots are awesome. Although they say for the salt solution you should use kosher salt or sea salt instead of regular table salt, since table salt contains iodine and other additives that probably aren't the best for your sinuses.
