Gym Clothes
First of all Im male
Alright, Ive been going to the gym fairly often recently, probably 3-4 times a week. My gym clothes are good ones, but i only have one outfit. Of course I dont wash this everyday (maybe once a week) but am I breaking any fashion rules with this? I dont believe that I stink too bad w/ this clothes, I do sweat, but when i first put them on they dont bother me. Im just wondering if im getting labled as that guy in the "blue pants and grey shirt" or something. Would it be wise that I invest in some more outfits? Personnally I dont realize what others are wearing all the time, but I do want to look good @ the gym, because they're ladies there, and it is also my schools gym. |

I go everyday, so....
I own 3 pairs of shorts/pants and a bunch of t-shirts. I usually wear my shirts for 2 straight days and my shorts 3-4 days. If I get really sweaty then that may change, but I don't sweat a lot either.. Oh, and i really don't care what I look like (married), I just don't want to offend.. I do see some folks that are regulars in the exact same outfit every day, the fact I notice -- that says something... |

I'm at the gym five or six times a week. I'll wear shorts for three or four trips apiece, but t-shirts only get one day's worth of wear.
It's probably the sort of thing people notice, but I doubt they discuss it. That sort of thing tends to stop when you graduate from high school. |

I do the same thing.
I go to my university gym about 3-5 times/week depending on if I have time or not. Your post made me realize that every single time i have gone this semester I have worn my red high school gym shorts and a white undershirt. Maybe I should change my clothes lineup a bit as well.

So it seems most people DO wear the same thing most of the time. Im going to have to see if I can pay attention to specific people more often.
Oh and it isnt about people discussing it, but i was just curious about gym ettitque and the norm. whole different subject, I have been finding gum & bandaids inside the cup holders on some machines! GROSS!!!! |

I own 3 pairs of black yoga pants, and 1 pair of navy, and several pairs of capri pants in different colors. I go to the gym 5 days a week. I wear something different almost every time but since it's winter I've been sticking with pants so I look the same 3 days a week. However, I always wear wifebeaters (men's A-shirts if you want to be pc about it) that are white. Personally I don't care what I look like at the gym and I'm a single 20 year old female. I wear clean clothes every time I go because I feel dirty if I don't.
I think there's too my emphasis, espically in college gyms on looking "good" and not actually working out. I go there to sweat and be gross, so I don't wear makeup, I don't wear shorts or shirts that don't cover my body (so I can be oogled by the guys, like lots of women). Girls and guys who clearly go to the gym and make a fashion statement or to find a date drive me nuts.

I wear the same shorts four to five times before I wash them. I wear a different shirt every day though, because when I run I sweat a lot. As long as you don't smell I don't see the problem. I don't really pay attention to what other people wear either, unless it's some chick in some incredibly short shorts (happens a lot in the Oceanside 24 hour fitness). Then it's only to ask what the hell she's doing in the gym with that on? Normally I'm the guy with the headphones on who doesn't really talk to any one.

If you don't smell, why should you care?
I wear the same shorts most of the time. But I make sure that none of my clothes smell bad.

I go to the gym 3 times a week, i have three outfits. I wash my clothes on Sundays, ready for another week. Maybe my clothes don't stink and I could get away with wearing them twice, but I just feel better if I'm always wearing clean. Plus, I always end my workout with cardio and sweat quit a bit.

The sexiest olive drab t-shirt the government ever made. My yoga pants and Capri's get a few strange looks, but hey, they are clean!

i wear the same thing every time i go to the gym (4ish times a week), and wash them every week (or whatever day i decide to do laundry). i think most people have "workout clothes" or whatever that they wear all the time.
i do notice other ppl's clothes, and observe that they do the same as i do. so majority rules - i'm sure it's fine...

If you don't know what others are wearing and have to remember to look at what others are wearing, then others are not likely looking at you either. Just think about how often you think about what others are wearing. This is about how often others are thinking about what you are wearing.
My opinion is as long as you are not stinking, wear the same thing. Who cares? Men usually smell their clothes after taking them off, whether it's from work or working out, we always smell our clothes. My wife thinks it's disgusting to smell your clothes. I say, how will you be able to tell if they are worth wearing another day if you don't smell your clothes?

Gee.
I'm not one for dressing up... but I sure would recommend wearing clean clothes to each session. I reckon that women would care about the smell, particularly as they tend to sweat less than us guys. And if that doesn't bother them - they're generally strong on the principle of washing stuff. |

Most people wear roughly the same thing; I know I do. I wear the same sweat pants time after time, but I do not wear cardio and soak 'em through. And they're loose, so they don't contact my body that much. I wash 'em every couple of weeks; and even the day before the wash you'd have to stick your nose up against them to smell anything. And then I'd have to ask you what the hell you thought you were doing :-).
T-shirts are different every time. I wear colored tees under my shirt each day; so when I work out at the end of the day, I just take off the shirt and work out in the day's tee. But yeah, a vast number of people wear more or less the same thing time after time. |

^^ same as above. Have shoes/socks/black nike shorts in my car so that I can go to the gym anytime I'm nearby. I always wear the same shorts, but I wear colored t-shirts under my shirts too, so I just take off the overshirt. Provides variety with no extra work..

It's hard for me to imagine not having 50 gym t-shirts that I picked up over the years, from races, college, vitamin stores, bars, strip clubs, etc. Most I got for free. Really though, I got most of my workout stuff from TJ Maxx, 5.99 for shorts 9.99 for New Balance shirts, etc. They have Under Armor pretty cheap too, sometimes. Unless you're really broke, I would head to a discount store and get a couple new pieces of workout wear.

This relates a bit. In psychology, I learned about the "spotlight" effect that someone mentioned above. We think that other's notice ourselves more often then they actually do. As if there was a "spotlight" on us. In reality, how often do you remember what other people are wearing? You may right afterwards, but if someone wore the same outfit, would you notice?
On another note, I don't mind the girls who wear short shorts and a sports bra. Eye candy is always nice when you are at the gym.... I don't go there to pick up chicks but having hot girls there makes the gym a better experience and in some cases can give you some extra motivation.

I don't get it. If I do a cardio workout (2 or 3 times a week) my shirt stinks, there is no way I could wear it again without washing it. Sounds like I'm working out too hard http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/newreply.php# . Lifting weights I sometimes re-use for two days but not always.

Umm, I workout all the time, and wear change my clothes each and every single time--And I work out at home. Workout wear is not expensive (Target! Wal-Mart!), and that way you don't even have to *think* about if you're stinky, repetitive, etc. Just invest in a few more outfits, K?
If you don't care, then you prolly give off the "I don't care" vibe, which isn't...fashionable. Hey. You were asking for fashion advice...it doesn't take much effort or money to look a bit more polished, even at the gym.

I have five pairs of bike shorts (I spin a lot) and 5-6 pairs of gym shorts. I wear anything once and it's in the wash. I can't imagine wearing the same thing twice without washing. On another note, most of my shirts and sshorts are the same or similar. I don't want to waste time matching workout clothes. You may not think your clothes stink but others sure notice. I notice stinky people in the gym - and there are quite a few - much more than what people are wearing day-to-day. I'm too busy with my workout but smells spill over!! I also can't understand how someone gets sweaty and then just gets in their car and drives away. It's to the showers for me.

pants/shorts I'll wear usually 3 or 4 times unless I've worked up a particular sweat. Shirts I usually change each workout unless I know it will be brief or the previous wasn't that sweaty. Mostly though I just go with how it feels, if it feels gross then I don't wear it. Smell has never been a problem as I seem to have a good natural scent.

The thing I don't get is how people work out and don't sweat. If your body doesn't heat up enough through activity and effort to sweat is that really working out? Guess my last thought is how often people that don't change workout clothes change their underwear!!

Heh. I've asked people, and I can tell when I smell bad, I do occationally but I rarely get BO in that sense. It just smells like clean sweat, with whatever that scent is that each person has that you can't wash away. So if you don't like the smell of sweat, sure then maybe you consider me as smelling bad (when I'm sweaty...I still take showers daily, sometimes twice a day after I work out though it has more to do with feeling clean rather than smell) but I rarely get that BO smell or whatever it is that is nasty, I can't describe it but I can tell when I get that.
Secondly, I change my underwear every day, regardless of if I worked out. And I don't get how some people feel the need to change their shorts/pants every day...mine just don't get that dirty/sweaty. Oh and not all sweat produces bacteria, there are several conditions that prevent bacterial growth, pH levels being one of them. |

I can't agree on that "...not all sweat produces bacteria." Nearly everything produces that stuff, especially sweat, which is a way for your body to cool itself and also remove waste products. Plus, if your skin isn't sterile, it has dirt - which, when mixed with sweat produces...well, you know what.
Clean sweat? That's an oxymoron. Give it a few hours and that bacteria begins to develop and grow. Sorry, it's just science.

I wear the same pair of pants every time, and rotate through about 7 or 8 T-shirts each workout. On days when I don't do cardio, I can usually wear the T-shirt once more, but on cardio days I am soaked with sweat and smell disgusting!.
Fiancee wears a pair of black yoga pants and a random t-shirt... but she never smells and doesn't usually sweat in the gym (trying to help her up the intensity a bit - but the TV's in front of the treadmills/bikes distract her!) I do get a kick out of the girls in ultra-tight and ultra-sexy workout clothes Add in the guys that keep checking out their own biceps in the mirror and it's always good for a chuckle

Found this information when searching on the benefits of a streem room. Provides even more reasons to change your workout clothes after each workout. And if you don't sweat when working out, you probably aren't really working out!
"As the pores open up and millions of sweat glands start to excrete, the body rids itself of metabolic and other waste products. Sweat contains almost the same elements as urine, and for this reason, the skin is sometimes called the third kidney. It is estimated that as much as 30 % of bodily wastes are eliminated by way of perspiration. The skin's more than 2 million eccrine glands respond to rising body temperatures by excreting sweat to cool the skin and the blood in the skin's capillary vessels. According to Dr. J. Perasalo of the Finnish Student Health Services in Helsinki, sweat emulsifies the fat of the sebaceous glands far more effectively than water and clears them of sebum and the bacterial flora they usually contain.
