This relates a bit. In psychology, I learned about the "spotlight" effect that someone mentioned above. We think that other's notice ourselves more often then they actually do. As if there was a "spotlight" on us. In reality, how often do you remember what other people are wearing? You may right afterwards, but if someone wore the same outfit, would you notice?
On another note, I don't mind the girls who wear short shorts and a sports bra. Eye candy is always nice when you are at the gym.... I don't go there to pick up chicks but having hot girls there makes the gym a better experience and in some cases can give you some extra motivation.
