gaining weight

I've been a skinny guy since the time i began walking. i went from fat, chubby, cute toddler to being lanky as an adolescent. i'm about 6', maybe 6'1". but i only weigh about 145-148 lbs. i'd like to gain some weight, not necessarily muscle, but some bulk. i'd like to weigh in at about 155 or 160. that's a lot of weight to put on, so here's my question: do i need a special diet to gain weight? i don't excersize much at all anymore, but i never gain weight. i'm thinking that i probably have a fast metabolism, so is there something different i should eat? should i actually eat less for a while then eat more to slow down my metabolism?

HAHAHAHAHA!

Funny joke. This belongs in Tilted Humour.

But seriously, if you feel like you need to gain weight, I have a solution for you:

Take a nap after every meal. About a 1 hour nap should do. This slows down the metabolism, and you start to pack on the pounds.

Eat 4 meals a day. This increases the calories, and you start to pack on the pounds.

Eat lots of Carbs. Pastas and breads. These will be converted easily into fat, and you start to pack on the pounds.

People may try to tell you different. Don't listen to them. I am the Grand-Champ-Jedi-Fucking-Master of this subject. Finally, a topic where I am the expert...

I hope that someone can ask how to properly consume vast amounts of alcohol.

Firstly, go check out Tilted health and fitness, as I'm sure there's more info there than you could possibly read about what to eat. Secondly, don't just be a lazy ass and eat McDonalds three meals a day to put on weight- that's bad weight. That's "clog your arteries and give you colon cancer when you're 30" weight.

Start going to the gym and working out. Eat lots of protein, lots of veggies, drink lots of water. Give your body healthy food and make sure you're exercising, that way your body will have all the right ingredients inside it in order to be healthy. Then, if you want to gain weight, start lifting. Women *love* a buff man, and you don't want to be a skinny guy with a beer gut- that's not pretty. Part of the trick of gaining weight is keeping yourself healthy while doing it- that way when you gain weight it's healthy muscle weight instead of icky fat (heart attack = bad). good luck

Well since it is quite a bit of weight to put on I'd advise visiting your doctor and constructing a plan with him.

Like Sage said eating McDonalds and junk may help you gain weight but it'll be the icky kind...that jiggles....a lot. Focus on consuming calories. 1500 calories per day is about *average*. So you'd be looking at getting more then that. Excersise is important too. Muscle does weigh more then fat. When lifting weights do fewer repetitions with a higher amount of weight to get bulkier muscles. More repetitions with a lighter weight gives long lean muscles.

One way to tell if you have a high metabolism is your body warmth, especially after a meal. My boyfriend is super hot after he eats (well, he's super hot anyways ehehehe). It has to do with your body converting energy. Those with a high metabolism convert energy from food into heat right away, whereas slower metabolisms store and stuff. (Yea I really need to start studying my Biology again).

Best of luck man.

i suppose it really depends on what you, the original poster, find as an attractive body type, and perhaps, what type of person you want to attract with that type.

+1 for don't try to gain weight with junk and lazy tho. healthy is always good.

Why do you want to just gain weight, not muscle? Fat is not really what you want to be putting on man. You wont be gaining any bone mass, and your organs hopefully will not be growing very much, so about the only way to put weight on is muscle. Hit up that gym man, if you need help designing a workout or meal plan, just post up in Health and Fitness.

Just for clarification. 1500 calories is not average, it is almost the lowest amount of calories you can consume to maintain basic functions, even 2000 is pretty low, but that's what many of the RDA allowances are calculated. you want way more than 1500 if you want to put on weight.

Also muscle does not weight more than fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. The difference is muscle is more dense and you have some control over where it is distributed--assuming you exercise regularly.

Consult some of the nutrition or bodybuilding web sites mentioned in this area of the TFP. If you want to put on weight you will still need a lot of calories, but you should look into a good balance between protien, fat and carbs. If you just want to put on sloppy weight, though you can just go on the "supersize me" diet. PM me if you have any questions.

Of course a pound of fat will weight the same as a pound of muscle, you cant compare them by WEIGHT! Muscle is far more dense than fat is, so it weighs more per amount eg: in3, cm3, cup, whatever. What you are saying is like "A pound of styrofoam peanuts weighs the same as a pound of lead" Its great that they weigh the same, but you will have a mountain of styrofoam peanuts, and a 2.5 inch square block of lead.

1500 calories a day would be about the average requirement for a 5'2" sedentary female. The RDA's are all based on 2000 calories, as that is an average number for average people looking to MAINTAIN their weight. Its differant for every person. To origional poster: You did not provide us with anything as far as age or activity level, but if you are 20+ and active, and you would like to get to your "desired" weight (which is 175lbs btw), I would recomend at least 2800 calories per day. For someone your height, unless you are completely sedentary, as in the only exercise you get is walking to your driveway, then into the office, the very LEAST you should be eating is 1800 kcals per day, anything lower than that and you will start losing muscle mass and body weight.

My experience in gaining weight

Well, when I decided to put on some weight I basically followed this simply rule: Eat as much as I can, Work out like a fiend. I spent about an hour in the weightroom (high weight low reps) and then about an hour of cardio (sprints, jump rope, ect ect) 5 days a week, and at about a 5k-6k calorie diet a day. You can eat bad stuff(you said any weight, which is how I was), just make sure you eat good stuff too or the workouts get you no where. I went from about 160 lbs at 10% body fat, to about 215 with a 15% body fat in a about 18 months. But, Huge problem when I decided I gained enough weight, I was used to eating huge amounts of food, and so if i ate less than about 3.5k calories a day I would feel hungry all the time. I'm better now, I still eat about 3k a day but I play rugby and lift weights on a semi-regular basis. But after I stopped working out hardcore - before I cut down my eating - I put on another 25 lbs of not good weight, which doesn't look good at all. Let me tell you, it's way harder lose weight than to gain it. So really watch how your body is changing very carefully, both while gaining and afterward for a while.

Also, Don't expect the same thing the whole time, as your body changes so will its needs in order to gain weight. I remember I sat at 198 lbs for almost 6 weeks before I gained another pound, switched some things around and off I went again up to 215.

I have the same problem.

I'm 21 years old, exercise everyday (either martial arts or soccer), eat 4 meals daily, but never put on weight.
I am planning on going to the gym, but am quite self conscious of my weight, so I find the idea a bit daunting.
From what I have read some people just have a really fast metabolism, so find it extremely hard to gain weight. I think the best way to gain weight is just to eat stupid amounts of (good/bad (not just bad)) food and lift weights.

But remember, most people don't care about the fact that you are skinny, so don't think that you are any less of a person. But, if you yourself can't get passed this fixation of being thin, then buff up and move onto your next problem.
