Smoke works great. Use leafy (sp?) branches, green stuff. Lots of smoke, very little fire. The only concern is if there is baby birds because they won't be able to escape.
Once you get rid of them cover the top of your chimney with chicken wire, etc., so they don't come back.

I have a pellet stove in my fireplace, and a frozen birds next blocked the pathway of the piping to the chimney, causing the fire to die and the smoke fill the stove.
Since the birds were already gone, I dont have any advice on getting rid of them. However, to prevent any birds from setting up shop again, get a little chimney cap for the top of your chimney. Call any place that services fireplaces, and they will be able to order and install it for you. |

The fireplace is non functional. The flew is rusted out, so it's just open. Because of that, we have it boarded up. The birds seem to have made a nest somewhere close to the bottom. If we take off the boards, the birds might fly out onto the house. That would suck.

we used to hanve the birds come down the chimney into the fireplace, the fireplace was cast iron and had a door on it.
when we first moved in i told my parents "something is in the fireplace" they didnt beleive me... anyways until we took the fireplace out we had a few occasions where we'd open the fireplace door then the birds would run/fly around our house and we'd hace to chase them out... good times |

There are no windows high enough for them to find. I'm afraid of them flying and getting stuck in the ceiling of the stairwell. The floor plan of my house is not conducive to birds. They’ll get trapped. That would suck.
Jam: It wouldn't be a problem if they weren't so loud. |

Yeah, all the windows have screens on them, that are really hard if not impossible to remove, and there's only one door that they could go out. More than likely they'd get stuck upstairs.
Although telling the landlord that we're infested with baby birds was really funny.

You'll probably have to wait a couple of months until the chicks are old enough to fly away before you evict them. I've always heard that birds will abandon their young if a human handles them. That may be an old wive's tale, but I'm not going to be the one to recommend that you experiment to find out.
