Birds have nested themselves in my chimney

How the hell do you get rid of birds? They are so loud my livingroom sounds like a jungle.

the_marq 07-08-2004 12:52 PM

That depends, are you willing to kill the birds?

pinkie 07-08-2004 12:52 PM

As long as they don't end up stinking.

07-08-2004 02:54 PM

smoke em out?

KMA-628 07-08-2004 03:33 PM

Smoke works great. Use leafy (sp?) branches, green stuff. Lots of smoke, very little fire. The only concern is if there is baby birds because they won't be able to escape.

Once you get rid of them cover the top of your chimney with chicken wire, etc., so they don't come back.

I have a pellet stove in my fireplace, and a frozen birds next blocked the pathway of the piping to the chimney, causing the fire to die and the smoke fill the stove.

Since the birds were already gone, I dont have any advice on getting rid of them.

However, to prevent any birds from setting up shop again, get a little chimney cap for the top of your chimney. Call any place that services fireplaces, and they will be able to order and install it for you.

The fireplace is non functional. The flew is rusted out, so it's just open. Because of that, we have it boarded up. The birds seem to have made a nest somewhere close to the bottom. If we take off the boards, the birds might fly out onto the house. That would suck.

Jam 07-09-2004 12:57 AM

we used to hanve the birds come down the chimney into the fireplace, the fireplace was cast iron and had a door on it.

when we first moved in i told my parents "something is in the fireplace" they didnt beleive me...

anyways until we took the fireplace out we had a few occasions where we'd open the fireplace door then the birds would run/fly around our house and we'd hace to chase them out... good times

Nisses 07-09-2004 01:34 AM

pinkie: why would that suck? Open doors and windows and let them fly out on their own?

pinkie 07-09-2004 01:12 PM

There are no windows high enough for them to find. I'm afraid of them flying and getting stuck in the ceiling of the stairwell. The floor plan of my house is not conducive to birds. They’ll get trapped. That would suck.

Jam: It wouldn't be a problem if they weren't so loud.

Moobie 07-09-2004 01:47 PM

Yeah, all the windows have screens on them, that are really hard if not impossible to remove, and there's only one door that they could go out. More than likely they'd get stuck upstairs.

Although telling the landlord that we're infested with baby birds was really funny.

pinkie 07-09-2004 01:53 PM

Not to mention, holding the phone up to fireplace and letting him actually hear them! :D

I'm not sure what they're called, but there are people you can call to take care of this for you. Chimney sweeps, or some such.

maleficent 07-10-2004 10:34 AM

Call the Audobon society - and ask them for advice...

Hey, Thank you maleficent!

That's a great idea. I was just thinking last night as I listened to the baby birds chirp, that I really don't want to hurt them and if nothing else, I'll just leave them be.

You can try sliding in mothballs behind the boards to scare them out. They won't be hurt, but the smell drives them crazy.

pinkie 07-11-2004 11:32 AM

There's a nest full of baby birds that will die without their mother though. :(

SinisterMotives 07-11-2004 04:58 PM

You'll probably have to wait a couple of months until the chicks are old enough to fly away before you evict them. I've always heard that birds will abandon their young if a human handles them. That may be an old wive's tale, but I'm not going to be the one to recommend that you experiment to find out.

Not at all true. Quite the opposite, really. Mother ducks get really mad when you touch their kids.
