I have a pellet stove in my fireplace, and a frozen birds next blocked the pathway of the piping to the chimney, causing the fire to die and the smoke fill the stove.
Since the birds were already gone, I dont have any advice on getting rid of them.
However, to prevent any birds from setting up shop again, get a little chimney cap for the top of your chimney. Call any place that services fireplaces, and they will be able to order and install it for you.
