Adult ADD

Alright, I've seen this commercial recently and I'm curious. I took the test at their site
Adult ADD Test

The results came up mixed positive that I have this condition.

Has anyone on this board (over the age of 18) been diagnosed with this? What medication do you take?

I'm concerned about this because I have a lot of trouble maintaining my focus in many situations.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to be more knowledgable before I go speak to my doctor.

Thanks

I have had experience as an educator working with students with ADD. Also my Dad was officially diagnosed with it. The "test" given you at this site is VERY brief and an answer of "often" to any or all of the things mentioned can be a result of a number of learning problems. To be really sure you should see a Dr who deals with ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Hyperkinesis, and other types of problems. My suggestion - UNLESS you cannot complete any task at all and this is so severe that it has caused a lot of problems in your life for you - look for someone that can teach you coping strategies before you start any medication. From what I know, most of the medications that are around for ADD can cause some pretty undesirable side effects. If you can cope without drugs try to do that first. There is another thread that talks about the drugs used for ADD and from there I know there are a number of people here who have been diagnosed with ADHD. I can't used the search engine here right now but I will see if I can find it for you. There is a good bit of useful information there.

Edit:Found the thread - Here ya go.

I was diagnosed with ADD and dyslexia as well but I have an extreme aversion to all types of medication. What helped me the most was a strong exercize routine. Burning off my excess energy and tiring my body out helps my mind to slow down and focus. Ive tried starting a meditation routine but I find it nearly impossible to sit still for that long. Im trying to get into Tai Chi and slow motion meditations as well as Zen and Tae Kwon Do kata to calm my mind and increase focus.

Diet is said to play a major role too but one thing at a time for me.

Who doesn't have ADD or ADHD or Adult ADD? One of our generations' ridiculous diagnoses. It's amazing how many people are just now finding out they have it. It's amazing how many kids have it. I think it is a great way for everyone to have an excuse for everything.

Did I mention I think it is a joke!!!

It is a result of the electronic generation. TV, Video Games, Movies, etc have made our minds respond to such faced paced stimulation that real life is just too slow and doesnt stimulate our brains enough. All we need to do is unplug and keep our kids from in front of the tv and the problem will take care of itself.

I'm glad you think taht my very real illness is a joke. Maybe in your country they prescribe Ritalin to everyone who casues trouble as a kid, but in mine they don't.

Sometimes kids who are just troublesome and hyper are diagnosed with ADHD when they aren't. It can be overdiagnosed.

Those who truely have the problem though will respond to Ritalin and other similar drugs. Ritalin is essentially a stimulant. If the child/adult isn't ADHD and just hyper he'll become more hyper when given Ritalin.

It isn't a made up problem. Sadly the overdiagnosis has caused some of the general public to view it as bogus when it isn't.

There is a very real difference in the average person and someone with ADHD - there's a chemical difference in the brain and in the way the person thinks. Just because of some people's mistakes we shouldn't laugh at all people with ADHD as being fakes. There are MANY more real cases than fakes.

There's a big difference between ADD and just not being able to concentrate. Practically everyone has some trouble with concentration, with all the distractions of modern life. All my friends had a hard time writing papers in college, or sitting though a long meeting, or filling out forms. That's just how life is. That's not ADD.

I was diagnosed with ADD a couple of years ago, and I might be an extreme case, but I see a pretty big disparity in my ability to focus compared to most others. For instance, when I would write a paper in college, I could sit down and write a five page essay on King Akhenaten's reformation of the Egyptian religion, but I had to do it straight through because I can't organise my thoughts into an outline. It would still be a really good paper, but I get an F because I couldn't read the half-page's worth of instructions on how the essay should be formatted.

There are a lot of little things, too. I don't watch movies very often because of the effort it takes to pay attention for an hour and a half. When I have to do normal work, like on the computer or something, I often give myself migraines with the effort involved in paying attention to a single thing for 15 minutes. The only way I could get anything done in college was by overloading myself with classes, since if class was going too slowly, I'd just phase out and miss everything. I'd forget about midterms, etc. I spent a whole trig class entering waveforms into my graphing calculator. It's not even like I lose interest. I'm paying attention to one thing, then suddenly my attention slides in a completely different direction and I forget what I was doing in the first place. I'll be in a conversation with someone, then suddenly my attention shifts and I miss the last three sentences they said. It can get really annoying.

For another example, my car was recently in an accident, where someone ran into me while I was waiting for the red light at an intersection. It was the other person's fault, there was no argument, and would pay for any damages. All I had to do was get an estimate and sent it over. But I kept forgetting. After about a month, I got around to doing it, and it turned out that there were a few more steps involed. I had to fill out some forms, talk to the guy on the phone, and work out what to do. Just thinking about it I got totally confused. I couldn't pay attention to it or remember what I had to do next. I basically decided to pay the $1000 bill myself because I couldn't follow the steps necessary to work through it. Finally, my girlfriend and some relatives had to help me out and tell me to do each thing individually. Everything sounds incredibly easy, but I just can't work it out.

I find that when I'm on medication, everything changes. Getting up to take out the garbage doesn't completely disrupt my train of thought, leaving me confused and disoriented. I don't scream and punch the walls when the phone rings. I don't sit and stare into space for long periods without realizing it. There are a few side effects, but it's quite helpful overall.

Responding to the individual that thinks ADD is a joke.... all you need is a kid with problems and no answer to understand this is real. My son was diagnosed before it was popular. That explained a lot and helped us cope. Unfortunately, many kids are diagnosed ADD when they are really bipolar or something else that is just beginning to bloom.

It is no joke and unless you are a professional, you only have a half baked opinion.
