training for a 10K

I have worked out for years but I have decided that my cardio needs more focus to make it fun. I would love to run a 10K at some point [figure either the spring or fall of next year] but I know very little about this type of training.

Anyone know a good site for programs or have some training ideas?

Thanks!

not sure about sites, but do a google for the marine marathon that's held in the DC area. if it has a web site, might tell you how they train.

easiest way to train for running is to just run. Find a race, maybe a month or two from now, and just start out small. Run a mile or two a day for a week or two. The next week add a single longer run, maybe 10 more minutes than the rest.

Every 2 weeks add a little bit to your average. Maybe 5 minutes more.

If you want specific workout plans, go to www.runnersworld.com. Not my favorite publication, but they're alright for beginners.

start out small- about a 5k, runing normal pace, do that for 2 days, move to 6k, do that for 2 days, move to 7k, and so forth until reaching 10k, then you continue running the 10k running a little harder each time, and youll time will shoot up.

Just like SSJ said. Start small. Be sure to eat right too. Lots of carbs. Don't block out protein though. Stay extremely hydrated, like 8 glasses of H20 (and not juice or sports drinks) a day. Run every day, but not far every day. Run far (5k to 10k depending on where you are in your training) like every other day and short (1k to 5k depending) in between to give your body time to recover.
