strange sleeping problem...
i don't know why...but i never seem to get tired or sleepy. i have a busy schedule - i wake up at 5am, commute, work for 9 hours, commute back, head straight to the gym after work, play madden for an hour, then talk to my gf on the phone for an hour but i usually can't sleep until about midnight. i eat well (6 meals a day, lots of water, good balance of p/c/f's) and i'm not taking any medications. the only time i feel tired is when i'm waking up in the morning. wanking doesn't even work...it actually has the opposite effect by keeping me up longer! i mean, i feel just fine cuz i'm being productive but shouldn't i be getting more than 5 hours of sleep a night?

I'm not a doctor, but I remember reading this in my Neuro-Psychology book, so take that as you will. As I understand it, you don't feel tired for the majority of the day. If you feel fine on 5 hours of sleep, thats the amount that works for you. I normally only want 6, if I do 8, most of the time I don't feel any better.
Or did I miss the point and you do feel tired for the majority of the day?

Some people tell me that they only sleep for a few hours a night, personally I can't imagine living like this - I like to get about 10 hours when possible, but everyone's different. There's still a lot we don't know about sleep, but you sound like you're still living a healthy lifestyle and are in good health already. Perhaps you just find it hard to wake up, I know I do, that's the worst part!

5 hours is fine. Your body will tell you if you need more...ie you will be tired all day, you'll crash as soon as you hit the bed, etc. If you do begin feeling tired all day, try to decrease the amount of stimulus you receive at night that could increase the adrenaline near bedtime, like Madden or whatever.

I was like this for a while and was advised to avoid any caffinated drinks or high in sugar foods at least 6 hours before bed. It's weird the way you don't even realize what you're taking in before bed until someone points it out to you. You could also try drinking an decaffinated tea or something. All that warm, soothing business seems to work.

Addition: I've also noticed that I am less tired if i wake up earlier. I'd be more sleepy during the day if I awoke at 9:00 than at 6:00. I supposed this is due to the fact that my body has had more time to come online. But on another note, I'd be less tired if I pulled an all nighter than if I slept for two or three hours.
