What would you do? (work shit)
If you suspected that in your job you were about to be transfered to report to a guy you really dont want to work for.
Without going into why, and the rights and wrongs of the position, would you: A - Speak to the senior guy in the company and somehow try to convey you dont want to work for the guy B - Not say anything C - Tell someone in "confidence" who you know is indiscrete and it will get back to the big boss, but their is some kind of plausible deniability. __ If it happens Im 60% sure I'll walk out. Im about to be declared bankrupt in 2 weeks time, not the best time to be walking out a job Ive been in 10 years. Then again, if I do something that can only completely undermine the working relationship at the start... (as well as it being pretty much a prick move in its own right, morallty) and it still comes off, things will be even worse if I stay And if I just say nothing, keep my head down, just wait things out... how long and I going to be in a situation I fundamentally dont want to be in?

None of the options presented sound like they would result favorably for you. You may consider talking to a senior guy and, without mentioning your issues with your soon to be supervisor, ask to be transfered to work in another area that you find "particularly interesting and have always wanted to try"....and would just so happen to place you under someone else with whom you have a great (and productive) professional relationship.
Barring that, I would say to just suck it up while you look for employment elsewhere.

I agree.
Having worked in HR for a "few" years, if it gets back to anyone that you don't want to do it, you have a problem with it, etc, you will be the one seen as the troublemaker, doesn't matter if the other guy humped your grandmothers dead kitty... Your choices are work with it or walk. |

I had a supervisor for a few years that I absolutely despised. He was manipulative, unethical, and threatened to fire me at least once a month, usually more often. I did it. I hated it, however, I did my job w/o playing into the politics. When I was pissed I told him so. When he was full of shit, I told him so. When he asked if I enjoyed working there, I told him no. I never once lied to him about how I felt, but I did my job, and did it well. The contractors (our customers) that I worked with never once heard anything negative from me, and I always tried to perform the best I possibly could. I eventually transferred out of that dept. and have earned my former bosses respect (as much as he respects anybody that is).
I tell you this because it matters not how much you dislike your new boss, you have a job to do and an obligation to your employer. Yes it would be fine to start looking for a better job, provided you continue to do the best job you can do while you are still w/ your current employer. Finding another job may be your best solution, but know that the grass isn't always greener... |

i would tell my supervisor, or whoever makes the decision to transfer you, that you would rather not work for the person for personal reasons and would be far more productive and a better asset to the company if you didn't get transferred to that guy. you could always caveat that by adding *if* you *HAD* to be transferred, you would do the best job possible and you would make it work no matter what.
that is what *I* would do. i also have the uncanny ability to make the exact wrong decision or say the exact wrong thing at the wrong time, close to 100% of the time. |

1. Find some other job to be transferred to at the company yourself
2. Find something else while dealing with what ever happens at your current company. And, I would also suggest a finance book to learn how to save at least 2 years living expenses after working for 10 years. It gives you freedom to find something else without worrying about what happens at your current job. Add in whatever unemployment benefits exist in the UK, and you would be in a different situation. |

A better question: Why haven't you been looking for another job already? A man that is sitting content at one job and not looking is just asking to get screwed by fate, luck and whatever mischievous mystical outer space superheroes are out there meddling in the affairs of those stuck drinking 4-packs of bitter beer and crunching on ketchup flavored crisps. Always have a backup plan, bro. Remember that story about the ants and grasshoppers? That.
I'm soaring through my current job like Superman but they could lay me off tomorrow. I've seen it happen. People get couched all the time. The next company already has me on file and is waiting to give me a start date. I would have zero worries about hitting the silk if it got too retarded for me. Hope the issue gets resolved favorably and you remain employed. You're an asset to TFP and without a paycheck, you wouldn't be on here as much. Last edited by Plan9; 04-07-2011 at 09:57 PM.. |
