Just moved to Austin, TX
Well, i graduated college and wanted to get away from South Carolina. (where I knew everyone). Wanted a little adventure and heard Austin was a great place to live.
So I got a job and and an apartment, however I know only 2 people here. However they are either married or in a serious relationship. what's a good way about goin' to meet friends so that i can go down to 6th street and pick up the ladies. (try goin' by myself but can't get drunk cause i have to drive). I start training on monday, hopefully I'll be able to meet people there, any other suggestions besides work? |

This is all second-hand, of course, but check out the clubs and see how the dance scene works. If it works like I've been told, start dancin', or learn. |

Welcome to Austin.
Go to the Deep Eddy on Lake Austin Blvd and just sit at the bar... also, I noticed that if a guy knows how to do that 2-stepping crap here, he can dance with anyone in the bar whenever he wants. I think Dallas nightclub has free lessons...give it a try... |

Austin is cool. I go to school i austin. Yay UT
Some things i've learnd about austin. HEB owns the city. You're usually hard pressed to find any other grocery store around. 6th street is cool, but i myself am always scared off by the parking situations there. Coffee places close by campus are always full of people. Mozarts by lake austin and enfield rd is pretty popular. a good way to meet people is to get your two existing friends to gather up a bunch of friends and head off to Saltlick for some BBQ. That place accommodates every big crowds, and even though its pretty far away (30min drive at least from downtown) its well worth the trip. its known to be possibly the best bbq in texas, which translates of course to best BBQ in USA. Or try to get your co-workers to go to that RPM raceway up in Round Rock. Its pretty fun to go racing those indoor go-karts with each other. i've hit about 22mhp on those things and for those who think thats not too much... without a windshield or wide highways, if feels like 80 or 90mph. The best way to meet people is to first get good with some co-workers, then meet their friends, etc. If you want to pick up chicks... the closer you hang out by UT campus, the more you'll run into. Once you meet a girl, there are plenty of parks and restaruants to take a girl out to. Austin is a great town. The only thing i can say it is lacking of is good or even decent chinese food. |

It really depends on what you are looking for, young ladies 18-25, 6th is where you want to be. But austin always has stuff going on, go to the lake , drive south to Grune Hall (said Green Hall) oldest bar in texas , and a great crowd there, you also get some San Antoino mix of women as well. Not to mention that Austin has tons of clubs and bars for every taste.

Plenty of agreement with wlcm. (and he is right about the lack of chinese food).
I can't believe I forgot to mention Salt Lick in my post. It would be best to go at a busy time on a busy day. The food is great, but the best part is waiting for a seat. It is in a dry county, so it is BYOB. So pack a cooler of beer and head there. Once you park, you put your name in and they have a huge courtyard where everyone hangs our and drinks there own beer while waiting for their name to be called.... the more crouded it is, the longer you wait, and the more mingling you get to do !!! |

just mentioning salt lick makes me want to go now. That family plate (the all you can eat plate) is just so tempting. And no kidding about the BYOB. i've seen tables with empty cardboard cases all over. If you come on the right day, they'll have live music in the waiting area too. And if you go at night, bring a jacket because that place gets really cold at night even if it is Texas.

I live in a suburb right north of Austin. It totally depends what you are looking for before I would recommend anywhere to you. Alot of the younger and more liberal crowd hangs around campus and downtown. 4th street has some great bars for the more "mature" folks. West Austin and northwest Austin tend to be more conservative. There are a million parks and festivals going on all the time. Go pick up a Chronical and find a type of music you like. I guarantee that with one of the 100+ live bands playing on any given night you can find something to do. Go from there....

another note about Salt Lick... toward the end of the night, I have "donated" my last couple beers to the waiter (I think they pool beers they collect and party after close) in exchange for tons of extra "all you can eat" food, conveniently packed to go... enough for 3 or 4 more meals at home......

for people who don't live on campus, they still gotta park on campus--which is near impossible unless you pay park in one of the garages--in order to get to the e-bus.
West austin is really cool looking when you go really far out into the hills. Barton springs area is also quite pretty. i stay mostly close to campus myself though, so i don't know whats up there in pflugerville or roundrock except for the go kart race track up in round rock or the dell diamond for that minor leauge baseball team round rock express. There's also that hockey team the Ice Bats, but their mascot was really stingy with the free stuff that one time i went. Mega 93.3 fm has cool music |

I actually live in Pflugerville. It is a really quite little suburb with not a lot going on. People are really friendly, though. I know all of my neighbors and have even met the mayor at the local bar. If you are ever up there, go to the downtown area and go to Hanovers. It is a cool little bar that always has live music. Vallejo and alot of other local bands go up there and play. It is an old lumber store and the whole place is made of wood. You can ever bring kids in for the concerts, which is cool if you want you kids to see some live music.

Oh, My God, this place is overrun with Texans! Can you tell I'm from Colorado? Actually, my best man at my wedding is from Shiner (Shiner Bock, yum) and now lives outside Houston.
I think it's great that someone can post a thread like this here and receive so many cool ideas. Enjoy!

Next time they come back home to play, check out the Riddlin Kids. Great Austin band. You should find lots of hotties there, just some may be a little young.
