I live in a suburb right north of Austin. It totally depends what you are looking for before I would recommend anywhere to you. Alot of the younger and more liberal crowd hangs around campus and downtown. 4th street has some great bars for the more "mature" folks. West Austin and northwest Austin tend to be more conservative. There are a million parks and festivals going on all the time. Go pick up a Chronical and find a type of music you like. I guarantee that with one of the 100+ live bands playing on any given night you can find something to do. Go from there....
