Many years ago as a newlywed, I'd bought into this whole Valentine's Day thing and the spouse bought me a dozen roses with the declaration: 'Do you know how much they charge for these things????? You could grow your own rose garden for that!' So I did....
Haven't done Valentine's since. I don't think a 'day' should be made strictly for a commerciallizing of how one feels about another.

Do you mean that your SO *expects* you to give her something, and not give you anything in return? If so, that's total bullshit, and I say she should get a lump of coal for V-Day.

Then again, it's my habit to get cards for 3 people on V-Day (husband, mom, dad), which would be a lot of card-making on my own. Sometimes it's just better to buy it and be done.

I've bought the g/f some lingerie, and then i ran outa money after i bought a card. With a weekend away it is looking to be veeeery expensive, but oh so much fun.

I always considered valentines day to be the formalities before sex, i give you things, you give me things, we profess everydying love over dinner then hot-foot it to bed.

This is something i never see over here, but my auntie and uncle in the states seemed to do, sending valentines cards to people who arn't their SO (or crush). Is there any reason, or just being nice?

Those cute emails can go a long way.

Yes, I will be buying my SO a gift and he hasn't said but I think he'll probably buy one for me, too. We won't actually see each other until the 16th, though.

And I will also buy something little-ish for my three girls.

Yes, I will be giving my SO a gift. In fact, I gave him his gift last night so he could start thinking about how to get it. The gift: Permission to use his tax return on a Wii. I will probably also get him some chocolates or something for around the house that he wants.

Yes, I will be getting a gift in return. Last year he got me a box of chocolates from the local chocolatier, which was wonderful.

Yes, we will be going out to dinner. Yes, it's a place of my choosing (Mongolian grill) but I will be paying. Yes, I will be getting him a card and I anticipate he will do the same.

Yes, I will be getting cards for my parents as well. In my family, Valentines Day isn't just about showing your significant other how much you love them--it's about showing ALL the people you love how much you love them and how much you cherish the special relationship you have with them. Growing up, we always got special gifts and cards on Valentines Day. I still honor that tradition by sending friends cards and sending my parents cards. I am encouraging the young children I care for to do the same. In fact, today we are going to make about 15 Valentines for family and friends that the kids can give away.

Yup, as I mentioned above, same with me and my family. I didn't even know V-Day was a "lover's" thing until I got a boyfriend, lol. Of course, I bought my parents' cards awhile back and still haven't sent them to Seattle so I'm gonna do that NOW.

I grew up getting valentines stuff from my parents and I do the same for my daughter. I give those little 94 cent hearts with chocolate in them to all my guys at work and I get cards for my parents and inlaws and my best friend
