Valentine's Day Poll

Just an informal poll about Valentine's day and gift giving

ShaniFaye 02-06-2007 09:28 AM

Since Dave is going to be in Israel for V-Day we have already exchanged presents. He bought me a 51 cm strand of 13 mm black pearls (I've wanted those all my life and in Korea they were cheaper than here lol) and I bought him another present he will never use, because its a "collectible".

New years we saw a car in NC that had a snitch (from harry potter) antenna ball, so I set about trying to find him one. Turns out they were made as promotional items for the first movie and never made to be "sold". So I paid a good chunck of change to buy one from a collector. It will never go on the car cause someone might steal it, so it will stay in its packaging and sit along side a miriad of other presents that collect dust....but they are still in their packaging, so the actual product isnt dusty

he was tickled to death with it

absorbentishe 02-06-2007 09:28 AM

Well, I already sort of gave her a gift, a new diamond for her wedding ring. I will buy something else, and something kinky too!

kurty[B] 02-06-2007 09:54 AM

<-- Single, will probably work late that day, and go to sleep early.

Glory's Sun 02-06-2007 09:56 AM

No idea what I'll get the wife. I just like to wing it and figure it out that day.

Grasshopper Green 02-06-2007 10:12 AM

We don't do Valentine's Day; we've only celebrated it once in the 11 years we've been together. We'd much rather save the money for vacations later in the year.

Bill O'Rights 02-06-2007 10:26 AM

Valentine's Day also just happens to be Mrs. O'Rights birthday...so I get the double whammy.
On the other hand, it's one less thing that I have to remember.

This year I'm taking her on a "Murder Mystery" on the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Dinner Train.

ShaniFaye 02-06-2007 10:31 AM

oooo I always wanted to do that.....you'll have to tell us how it was

Brewmaniac 02-06-2007 10:37 AM

After 25 years, we exchange cards, I'm more likely to get her flowers on March 13th, anniversary of our first date best Friday the 13th of my life! Who ever said it was a bad luck day was simply Wrong!

Sultana 02-06-2007 10:52 AM

I hate V-day. I always remind the hub to NOT get me anything, and to not make plans to go out to dinner--not with me, anyways.

The dinner thing is just because every single restaurant is filled to capacity all night long, and you get to wait for hours longer than normal.

If he really *must* get me anything, I prefer a rose bush that we can plant in the back yard. With all the bodies. I very much dislike how prices are jacked up and expections and pressures are running high for a meaningless calendar date. And if the hub is *romantic* to me on a hallmark-pushed day, and not at any other time of the year for any other reason, it just gets my dander up big time.

God of Thunder 02-06-2007 10:54 AM

We haven't paid that much attention to it in the past, but since the daughter was born I tend to buy something for both of them.

Since it is a Wednesday this year, we'll probably go out to dinner. Just me and my two sweethearts.:love::love:

abaya 02-06-2007 12:52 PM

This is our 3rd Valentine's Day together, and we don't have any set rules, really. If we're inspired, we might get gifts for each other, but last year we just got cards for each other and that meant more to me than any gift. (I am a sucker for ktspktsp's words of love.) :hearts:

I thought it was cool that this year I could buy him a card with the word "husband" on the front, if I wanted to (which I didn't end up doing, but oh well). :D While buying his card, I happened to find a little gift that he would like... but it's not a "Valentiney" thing (chocolate, flowers, etc). It's just something he'll enjoy.

Besides, our dating anniversary AND his birthday are in April (same day, pretty much), so I'd prefer to save up and celebrate that. And we like having special blow-out dinners on other occasions that are less "loaded," as Sultana said.

Sugar&Spice 02-06-2007 01:14 PM

I won't get to see my boyfriend on V-Day and probably not until a week or two after. But, I got him a gift anyways. It isn't romantic..more like one of those gifts that you see and immediately think of the person. I'll get a sappy card to go with it too. We'll plan our own special day/night when are actually in the same town.

Sweetpea 02-06-2007 01:28 PM

I actually usually only get him a card. But this year, I wanted to do something special. And I can't really say since he might read this :) (if you do read this, I love you!)
But yeah, some years I love to celebrate it, others years, eh. But this year, I'm excited about it and even going to make a special dinner

Xazy 02-06-2007 01:31 PM

I don't celebrate Saint V-day. But then again my wife has me celebrating this month anniversary of first date...

Willravel 02-06-2007 01:34 PM

Garbage holiday. I give my SO gifts all around the year.

ShaniFaye 02-06-2007 01:36 PM

We do "no reason" gifts all year round as well

rockzilla 02-06-2007 02:25 PM

We'll probably celebrate valentine's day the same way a chef celebrates any other holiday... the day before or the day after. We'll probably be working at opposite times on that particular day. I'm not much for gifts, but I've been planning a 3 course dinner for the occasion... dessert will be pretty "interactive".

The_Jazz 02-06-2007 02:36 PM

We'll sort of celebrate it, but the kid's birthday is the next day. It may turn out that he's saved me Valentine's Day for the rest of my life by waiting that extra 45 minutes to be born. I have no idea what I'm going to get her. I've got all his birthday stuff planned out (not like he'll make a big fuss at 1 though), but I have no idea what to get the wife.

SirLance 02-06-2007 03:26 PM

I do "no reason" gifts all year, but V-Day is flowers and a poem. SPecial for us.

spectre 02-06-2007 03:36 PM

<-- Single, will likely spend the night doing homework.

But when I am seeing someone, yes, without question.

maleficent 02-06-2007 03:38 PM

/me makes a note to send speccie cookies and a single long stemmed yellow rose :D

hagatha 02-06-2007 03:41 PM

My best friend and I started a tradition called "International Friendship Day" which is celebrated on or around Valentines day (mostly so we'll remember it). We usually eat a big meal and exchange small gifts. One year she sent me flowers.

One of my best friends has her birthday on the 14th. She has dubbed it "Birthentines". I always feel bad for her significant others, as she puts way too much emphasis on the day.

Also, I'm a male, buying a gift. But since she will be out of the province again next week, it will probably be postponed till the weekend.

Aww.. that's really cute. :)

amonkie 02-06-2007 04:19 PM

<----- Also single

I will probably spend the night watching 3 rambunctious kids so some good friends can go on the dinner/movie date I gave them for xmas.

MexicanOnABike 02-06-2007 05:08 PM

I don't. my gift giving days are the day we met, birthdays and xmas. nothing else.

cadre 02-06-2007 06:38 PM

I'm female and I'm taking my so out to dinner and then back home for a special treat. I screwed up last year so this is my attempt to make it up.

Exactly what I think (well, excluding the bit about bodies in the backyard), except I'm male :)

CaliLivChick 02-07-2007 04:59 AM

Single... dunno what I'll do. May end up in chat with the other singles. :D

Oh and Mal, I LOVE that avatar! Safe sex... so cute!

Interesting comments and results.

The reason I posted this thread was because my SO told me flat out that she won't be giving me anything for Valentine's day. I was a bit bummed and wanted to see if Valentine's day really is a day for guys to do something nice for girls.

It's supposed to be a two way street... your SO needs to grow up.

newtx 02-07-2007 07:07 AM

I usually go for a card and maybe flowers. My second Vday with my bride netted her an electric knife. Note to all, never give an electric knife for Vday. The next day I gave her a card and candy but it was too late.

LoganSnake 02-07-2007 07:30 AM

I am a male and I already bought my SO a gift. Februrary 14th also happens to be our 1 year anniversary. Cheesy, I know. :p

Heh heh. It's quite convenient. My SO and I have our 1 year on Jan 1st, making the beginning of each month another month anniversary. Not bad for the forgetful, hehe

Lady Sage 02-07-2007 08:01 AM

I dont do beheaded-priest day. I asked Pan not to bother with it last year and he honored that.

Charlatan 02-07-2007 08:13 AM

I hadn't even thought about it.

I don't know what to do given my circumstances this year. Mostly likely I will write a cute email. Maybe a phone call.

It might be best to just ignore it and hope it all goes away.

Average_Joe 02-07-2007 09:37 AM

I'll be getting my wife something. If I don't I'm sure I'll be in the doghouse. Damn greeting-card holidays.

Awww see, that's kinda sad.

I don't think it's good to get the expectations up for a certain day, it's a easy way to being disappointed.

Maybe you could go ahead and plan on doing something original, nice, sincere, and heartfelt for her (which is, I suppose, my big beef with the day), especially if that's not the only time you do something like that, and perhaps in the future she'll reconsider her stance.

I suppose I just resent it when folks (guy or gal) do something for their partner that's supposed to show singular affection and honor, but really it's just motivated by trying to stay out of trouble, doing what everyone else is doing, feeling pressured and obligated by their partner, etc.

Meditrina 02-07-2007 10:26 AM

I voted for yes, I do plan on giving him a gift. Just something small, maybe some candy and a card, and me. :suave:

I have learned the hard way about expectations and these type of card-giving holidays. I understand that cards are not really my husband's thing and he does show me he loves me in other ways (like the way he touches my ass when I am dressed for work, or the way he just cuddles me when we are both sick). I have come a long long way with this, and it was not easy. But I like to give him something small, because I like to, and that is all.
