Do you mean that your SO *expects* you to give her something, and not give you anything in return? If so, that's total bullshit, and I say she should get a lump of coal for V-Day.

It doesn't have to be about the greeting card industry... I think *making* a card (or gift) is way cooler and more personal, if one has time. I used to do that crafty crap all the time, though these days I seem to have lost my ethics and have surrendered to Hallmark for the time being.
Then again, it's my habit to get cards for 3 people on V-Day (husband, mom, dad), which would be a lot of card-making on my own. Sometimes it's just better to buy it and be done.
