Constant neck pain and headaches

Everyday i wake up with a headache, starting from the base of my neck and ending in my forehead and both temples. My neck aches every minute of every day Every day I feel like chopping off my neck and just putting my head back on.

The only med I take now is tylenol, which basically has zero effect on my head and neck. I have already tried Alleve, ibuprofen, excedrin. You name the otc drug, i have tried it.

I've been to quackopractors (chiropractors). That only seems to temporarily relieve the problem. Then i have to go back in 3-4 times a week. That adds up to a lot of money NOT covered by my health insurance.

I have also been doing neck exercises, suchs as rolls and stretches.

Does anybody have any other suggestions for relief from chronic neck pain and headaches? Please?

Maybe your pillow has something to do with your neck pains and headaches. Have you tried switching to a new pillow?
You could try one that can be shaped/moulded easily or a Therapeutic Pillow if you haven't already.

No, i hadnt thought about that. That's an obvious one and was too easy a solution for stupid me to even see. I'm going to check out some new pillows tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up! (no pun intended)

I'm sorry your expierence with chiropractors was a bad one- if it weren't for my chiropractor I'd probably be on disability right now.

Changing your pillow is a good start- I know that when I sleep wonky my neck hurts all day afterwards. I use a chiro-flow pillow that I got at my chiropractor's office, but it's definitey not quackery- it's the greatest pillow ever. http://www.chiroflow.com/PillowsHome.htm

My insurance paid 80% of the cost, and I have no neck pain when I wake up. It's a super pillow- takes a bit of finangling to get the water level just right, but now that it's just right I take it with me EVERYWHERE even tho it weights about fifteen pounds

Also I would suggest going to a doctor. Having constant neck pain is NOT NORMAL. Pain is an indication that there's something not working right, and the longer it doesn't work right the harder it is to fix. Go figure out why it's not working right and what you can do to fix it. Taking meds just covers up the pain- it doesn't get rid of what's causing it. You need to deal with the problem itself, not just cover it up with meds.

I'm with ya on the chiropracters -i had one do more damage than help

A few years ago, I was having all sorts of headaches... and then then started getting tingling up and down my arm and started losing feeling in my forearm and hand and pretty much most of the strenth....

Muscle relaxants... pain killers.. physical therapy... chiropracter who gave me apinched nerve... nothing helped... On a whim,I bought a new laptop bag... that sat on a different spot on my shoulder... and the problem stopped getting worse - i havent' recovered full arm strength but at least headaches are just stress induced now and not nerve from nerves being pressed on...

Go to an osteopath--they're trained medical doctors but they have additional training that gives them tools to better advise you regarding this sort of problem.

A couple of years ago I had bad neck pain. It turns out I have a forward head (due to bad posture, caused by sitting at a computer all day). Between osteopathic manipulation to deal with the pain and physical therapy to correct the posture problem, the neck pain went away without using any sort of drug.

One thing I learned--and I recommend--is to roll up a towel and place it between your shoulder and head when you go to sleep. The towel will support your neck and you don't need any sort of special pillow.

These chiros saved my life! I finally learned how to find a decent one after moving a few times. One such accomplished adjustor told me to call and ask what techniques they use. If they (underline they) say Gunstead - go for it! It's a shame that some of these people give the rest that do good a hard time.

On another note, since they only move the bones a little at a time it will take several visits to get what is out of line in line again. The first time I had to go three time a week for two weeks, then twice for two weeks then once a week - and he got me out to where I only go once every 2-3 months to keep thngs in line. Plus, I do excercise to keep the supporting muscles working well.

On the pillow thing...we purchased a Temperpedic bed and pillows a few years ago. Both are awesome. The pillows conform to yor head and have a high and low neck support on the different sides. They are pricey but worth it if they work!

I would guess its the pillow or the bed or how you spend your day. i have had bad neck and back pain last weeks because of stuff like that. try sleeping somewhere diffrent or in a diffrent position. use diffrent pillows or no pillow at all try sleeping on the floor even. If you spend alot of time at the computer try moving the moniter around. or move your chair or use a diffrent chair.

Basicly it sounds like its from muscle tension. i have had my neck start feeling stiff from the stuff i do and the way i sleep then it just gets worse till it turns into a bad headache. Unless you have something really wrong other then just basic muscle strain and stuff doctors are a total waste of time. at least thats my opinion. doctors always seem to make me worse. maybe one out of ten doctors has any idea what they are doing if even that many. the rest will just make you worse or try to get your money.

Like Snowy, I had posture problems that caused me chronic and severe neck pain. What helped me IMMENSELY was getting regular (once a month) Deep Tissue massage. Not only does it help my neck (the pain is completely gone, by the way, the monthly visits are just for maintenance), but it's made me more flexible in many different ways--I even dance better because of it! It's literally changed my life.

I won't lie, it hurts like hell while it's happening, eventually it may not hurt so much, but it's better in my mind to hurt a bit for a few seconds and not hurt at all for the rest of the month.
