Playdough in an oven
Hey everyone,
Does anyone know if its alright to put playdough or something similar into an oven? I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive way to make a moulded cake. What i was planning on doing was making the mould out of playdough, and covering it with greased tin foil. Can anyone tell me if this will work or maybe some other suggestions? Thanks!

Play Doh cracks when it dries as it shrinks.
You'd be better of using Fimo or cheap modelling clay.

Sculpey/Fimo is gonna get expensive (also, I don't think it's food-safe)... depends on how big your cake is.
I suggest making big sheet cakes and using those to layer and build your form. This depends on your form of course, but we made a fantastic topographical island cake this way before. I've also seen people use rice-krispie treat cuz you can mold it easily while it's hot, it's cheap and edible, and it holds its shape well when it cools. You can also sculpt it quite easily with kitchen tools. Can you give us a better idea of what the end result should be?

Sure. My girlfriend loves Futurama so I want to make a small cake in the shape of Fry's head. (The main character)

Bakers Clay
Mix together: 4 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 cup boiling water food coloring if you want Knead until smooth. Add food coloring if desired. Make shapes and bake at 300 degrees until set and golden (1/2 hr to 1 hr) you could also paint it with some egg white before cooking to make it more golden... shellac it when done - .

Wow that's really sweet! Hmm if it's a small cake I'd almost say that you should just make it out of cake and forget the mold. It might be easiest to make a cake that lays flat in the shape of Fry's face. Start by baking a sheet cake (errr.. maybe two in case of mistakes... depends on your klutz factor). You can shape the face with a sharp knife to be roundish (e.g. cut out two half domes for his eyes, the mouth and nose will be slightly raised in the corners). This way you won't have to worry about a full 3-D sculpting job.
If it's small enough, you could probably print out a picture of Fry's face and use that to make cake stencils. Then whip up some different colored frostings and go to town with a gel frosting tip. ... Or spring for some fancy fondant if you're so inclined. And if you make mistakes, frosting surgery can fix it up pretty quickly! Or at least, that's how I'd do it. Hope that made sense. Let's see some pics when you're done! You've got a lucky girlfriend! EDIT... I think you've inspired me to attempt a Radiohead cake for my boyfriend... EDIT2: Marzipan --> Fondant, thanks Jenna.

Fondant is what cake decorators use (if you didn't know).
You can find many recipes online. You can also buy it pre-made. Wilton.com is great. It's where I buy most of my supplies. http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipe...ledfondant.cfm You can also google recipes. |
