Anyone else rank 99% of games from "great" to "awesome"?
I noticed today that my "scale" for games is rather skewed to the positive side after reading comments about games that they "were dissapointing" or "not what they'd hoped for.."
With the exception of maybe five games in my life time, I can't really say I've played any "bad" games. From side scrolling flash games where I shoot little black squares coming at me to Half Life 2, my scale just goes from "good" to "fuckin' awesome..." I think maybe I just like video games too much? Anyone else out there in the boat that they really don't dislike 99% of games?

My brother had a tendancy to come to the realization that he wanted a new videogame. He would get up and drive to bestbuy. Lets just say he tended to judge books by their cover.
He always ended up with the some of the worst and most annoying games. I think South Parks Chefs Love Shack was the absolute worst. He also quickly came to the conslution, "man, this game really does suck". ANd then it was off to EBGames to sell it and get something else. I personally, am very frugal. I read a lot about games before I buy, both offical reviews (with the understanding that they may be bribed), and user comments. I am still looking forward to the day when the PS2 drops in price so I can buy it (I have a feeling it will drop when the XBOX360 comes out...in time for xmas). The only time I got burned was with Outpost on the PC in the 90s. That game got good reviews from PCGamer (93%, editors choice), and then sucked. A few years later PCGamer admitted their mistake in an artical about overrated games, they also said they could not contact the author and did not know how it scored so high. I doubt they could not contact the author, but it was from that game that I now slightly distrust reviews from sources that get the revenue from advertising the games they are reviewing. So basically I always try to find some redeeming quality to any game I play. What I find 'fun' may not always be what the developers intended but I can usually entertain myself long enough to justify the purchase. |

ANyway i thought this topic was going to be about (sorry for a threadjack) sites or people who don't really give bad reviews or consider an 80 to be bad. I hate to read a negative or mediocre review of a game(or any media in particular) and then it gets a high score! It's like what they've done with cup sizes. You ask for a large, but it's now actually a small and the super-extra-large is actually the biggest. There needs to some kind of normalisation! although i've found a few sites to rely on reviews now anyway, so this doens't really matter. Just a nonsense peeve i guess |

Well I've certainly played some horrible games in my day. But that's why I wait to read reviews or hear from peers about most games before I buy. I just don't have enough money to spend it on shite games.

I'm a lot more discerning these days about my choice of games, but I used to come across random crap at work and at home. Here's a gem from my past.
GoDai, Elemental Force. I was fortunate in that I didn't actually buy this game. But I was unfortunate in that I tested this game for 3 months while I was working at 3DO. This game is SO bad in almost every regard. It's buggy, the graphics are substandard, the frame rate crawls (mind you, this is a late-generation PS2 game, so no excuse), the sounds are recycled (the protagonist and the antagonists share the same audio clips), the ending is crap, the gameplay is repetitive, the level design for certain sequences is uninspired, the camera controls suck, the entire second half of the game is practically missing, the multiplayer is pathetic, and the game would better served as a coaster, if it didn't create a black hole at its location. Whew. On the plus side, some levels were done well, the art before it was 'Frankensteined' by Trip Hawkins was respectable, and the music that runs over the credits is decent. |

For me, it's the way I approach any and all forms of entertainment. I approach everything in the way that they're probably intended and try not to compare and try to ignore hype. For example I don't think it's cool to compare the physics in Gran Turismo to the Need For Speed franchise, because that's just not gravy. So, Yea I love most games and can enjoy em the way that they're intended. In saying that, after playing like a million games over 12 or 13 years since getting my very first sega and snes, you develop at least a bit of a taste for games and can discern from the classics to the really really cheap knock offs. It just takes a bit of playing to realise it.

I either try to play a demo, borrow the game from a friend and try out the first couple levels, or just go online and find a "copy." If the game sucks, then I delete the game and go on with life. If the game is great, I go to the store and buy it, backup any saved games, uninstall the "copy" and install the freshly bought game. Unless it is a Sunday evening I usually don't play a game I don't have the CD for more than an hour or so.

I usually buy based on reader and professional reviews. I'm the exact opposite as you in that if a game isn't outstanding I can easily get bored with it, even if its a decent game. Take Final Fantasy for example, everyone loves those games, but to me they're just the same old rpg and can't play the game for more than a half hour.

I hardly ever buy games. I just mooch them off my friends or play games where I download the beta.
For the most part, it's pretty rare for me to say a game sucks. Since I don't actually buy the game, as long as it provides me some entertainment, I don't really care how bad it is/becomes. If I were to start paying for all my games, well that might be a different story.

I have very good ideas about what I like in games, and as such, I tend not to buy games I won't enjoy. Spur of the moment purchases are few and far between, and I won't buy a title I know nothing about.
