have gotten to the quests a couple of times and even got to Lord Surtur once, but died... nethack is a great game.

I love nethack, even though I'm really bad at it. I played some of the various angbands for a while, but they never got my attention as much as nethack did. A friend of mine keeps telling me to try ADOM, but I don't think it will be the same.

ADOM is better in a way coz it has a stronger storyline and u keep getting quests from NPC's
it has multicolor gfx but there r too manychoices to make in it like what to upgrade 75%times i dies were coz of lack of food or dying in 2 minutes after being hounded by wolves in the forest nethack is a more rounded game....its opensource so spoilers r easy to find/make...ADOM isnt best till now: lvl9 human monk in lvl9 dungeon...killed by a lizard while paralysed by floting eye ...15Kpoints

I had to give it up, though, after I dreamed that my dorm room was ankle-deep in white lice. There were these white lower-case "L"s all over the place, and they were MULTIPLYING! Creeeepy. It's pretty bad in the game but it's REAL bad in a dream! |

I myself play an angband variant called T.o.M.E or troubles of middle earth.
Better story line than Nethack IMHO. Fav character is a martial arts master ent. Ever imagined the sight of a dragon kicking ent? That is my fav thing about rouge likes is the use of your imagination.

comon!
i've never died of starvation...[never!] take a monk,he has loads of starting food[apples help you tame ponys/horses,fortune cookies/tripe rations tame cats/dogs] u'd better stick to barb/cave/valk they are tough so hard to kill barb/cave can eat everything(orcs can cannabalise without negative effects also) if its real bad...eat what you kill,newts/lichens eating kobolds/ooze/cockatrices are a bad idea check out antisymmetric.com ...its has a nethack forum

I've been playing Nethack for like 10 years now, on and off. I usually play Wizards since the days when he used to start out with an athame. Being accustomed to engraving, I still use the E word a lot. I've ascended with Wizard many times, Samurai few times, and Monk once. I ascended once this year.
It's a strange game, you make one stupid mistake and you die. Period. I used to cheat saving in the beginning, but I have come to accept that it really takes away from the joys of playing. I steal with pet, occasionally polypile (not recently), and sometimes wish for things. I often raise black pudidngs for food, and once I get fireproof do the magic trap charisma thing My most recent nethack kick was this summer/fall, when I was playing it 3 - 4 hours a day for 4 months straight. I'm better now. If you are dying at level 6, maybe you are going down too fast. Slow down. Get organized and keep the stuff you are not likely to need in a box, and if you are really paranoid, put a boulder over it. Keep working on getting good armors. Once you get to the shops in the gnomish mines, you are all set. You become harder to kill. Get money, buy protection from priest. I'm usually level 9 by that time. I go up and down several times by then. Fight judiciously and run away sometimes. Speed is very good if you can get it.... Happy hacking! |

I'm hooked on Angband myself. I play a varient called AngbandTk that uses 32x32 graphics tiles and has more of a windows interface. Unfortunately Tk isn't supported anymore, so I'm stuck on the 2.7.3 version.
I saw this varient the other day, you should check it out, it's a isometric view version of Angband. whether or not I could ever get used to playing this way is a mystery, but the effort done by the programmer is to be commended. http://www.isoband.cjb.net/

I've tried several roguelikes, but the only one I really enjoy is ADOM. Been playing that on and off for about 3 years, finished the game once, though it wasn't an ultra-ending.
I prefer ADOM for its colour graphics, storyline (non-existant in other roguelikes) and the fact that it's one of the few I've played with an interface that makes sense - none of this hjkl bullshit.

Nethack
Any fellow nethackers out there? It's definately my favorite game of all time.
What's your favorite class? How far have you got in the game without cheating? Personally, I am partial to wizards, and I once made it to the level where you've got to perform the ritual, but I died on one of the upper levels while trying to gather all the right items. I ate a cockatrice egg if I remember correctly. Ever notice how the best character die in the stupidest ways? |

I used to play a variant called Moria, which was, obviously, based on going into the Mines of Moria and taking on the Balor. I never got that far, though I think I got relatively close. Damn fine time. Never have I been more scared of a D in my life, though. Stupid dragons kicking the shit out of me through a wall. Damn.
