Axis and Allies (board game)
Hey, I did a search and I didn't see a whole lot on this, so I'm sorry if I missed it. Anyway, my friends and I play a lot of Risk when we can all get together, so we're into this sort of game. I was a shop the other day and I noticed one called Axis and Allies, which I've heard only a little about. I was wondering how any of you compare it to Risk and if you think it's a worthy investment.
Also I saw a boardgame adaptation of Civilization... I thought to myself, that would be fun if they could pull it off, but that seems like soooo much to try and fit into a board game of all things! I'd like any opinions on that if you guys have tried it out too. Thanks! |

ok, Axis and Allies is like Risk on about a pound of steroids. It's AWESOME. And it kicks Risk's ass. Risk is a great game, don't get me wrong, but Axis and Allies is just more in depth, complicated, and just all around good.
In case you don't know, it's a WWII game. There are 5 possible roles to play - the US, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, and Germany. With 2 players, one plays the Axis and the other plays the Allies. I forget how it works with 3 or 4 players. Anyways, it's WELL worth it. You'll love it. But know that it's also a LONGER game than Risk typically. There are times where you may start to play one night and have to finish it the next night. In short, Risk = Axis & Allies =

Axis and Allies is a very fun game and the rules aren't as complicated as they might at first seem. It's been one of the classic war board games ever since it was released, decades ago. Even for casual board game fans, Axis and Allies is a must own. Wow that sounds like a commercial.
The problem for me is that people eventually learn nearly unbeatable strategies... and it usually boils down to who gets Germany and few die rolls. But there are ways to balance it out... if you ever get to that point, there are FAQs on the internet. |

There are advanced rules available that not only balance some of the sides out (try winning as the Russians while playing against a seasoned Axis player if you want a challange ) but also add alot more depth.
Avoid getting the computer version though. It's full of bugs and is pretty much useless. |

It's a fun game, but even though I'm a mapping purist I play the computer version. Takes away so much tedium.
The fixxed player-nation number makes it somewhat inflexible. It isn't too hard to have one guy play Russia and U.K...or even have an Axis-Allies 1 on 1...but if you have more than 5 people (my gaming group has 7) you're out of luck. Although both sides have their fair share of strategies, there are a few for the Allies that make them nearly unbeatable. Japan's paper-empire on mainland Asia can be taken down with ease if the U.K. player knows what he's doing.

Axis and Allies is fun but time consuming. Also get ready to get really pissed at points too I've played this and Risk on PC but the one thing i hate is the feeling that the dice roll is not truely random...as in Risk when I rolled 14 1's in a row...and lost to a CPU opponent

If you like Risk you should check out the new version I believe it is called Risk 2010, it adds the moon and water bases. It is alot of fun.
Axis and Allies is a great game. If you want to go even more hardcore try Diplomacy. Diplomacy is more about alliances and it gets really interesting when a group of friends starts backstabbing each other!

When I worked at a fast food restaurant, it was always slow in the winter. Imagine, folks don't like sitting out in the snow waiting for their food?!?!
We used to play this for hours and sometimes days at a time. 1000 times better than Risk. Good times.....good times.....

Yeah if you're Germany and make a ton of tanks you can usually roll over most all of africa and still defend against russian assaults.
It is a great game but some fights themselves last 10 minutes (hand rolling units over and over) Sometimes 30 infantry 10 tanks, 2 artilery would be in berlin and it would take forever to finally destroy it. |

oh god, i had a friend who took axis and allies and created all new rules, maps, missions, everything...he ended up giving me the game and it had all his stuff still in it, the most confusing board game experiece to date. Once i learned the ACTUAL rules i fell in love with the game.
