Far Cry 2
I'm considering buying this game, but its hard to come to terms with my computer being insufficient for these new games. I was struggling with framerate and graphic quality through Crysis... is this game worse? Has anyone played it? How is it?

I've played a little of the PC & 360 versions (I own the 360 version and have access to the PC version). Thankfully FarCry II isn't a resource hog like Crysis.
If you meet just the min requirements you should float around 30 to 40 frames in the open areas. From poking around the net I've found some people with lower end systems notice the game drops to 20 frames in certain areas and the game runs better on Vista systems than Windows XP. ATI recently released a hotfix for the game, it "Improves performance on Crossfire and single-card setups, in both DX9 and DX10." Rumor is Nvida is going to release a patch too. Also, be aware if you have a widescreen monitor the game crops the full screen image to create the widescreen image. There is a fan made patch out there that makes the game run in true widescreen; nothing official from Ubisoft yet. Lastly, taking a trip to System Requirements Lab and using "Can You RUN It?" never hurts if you're worried about your specs.

I've had a lot of fun with the game. People have bitched about the abundance of baddies in the world, but I'm sure they think they're playing an RPG not an FPS. The purpose of the game is to wreak havoc and leave flaming death in your wake, not have serene drives in the countryside. The map maker is fantastic, a little unwieldy with a 360 controller, but quite powerful.

First off, DO NOT EXPECT FarCry 2.
It has nothing to do with the game other than its FPS + Pretty. Second, as long as you dont mind excessive enemy spawning and poor AI you're good. Example: You clear out a safe house, or small enemy camp. 3 real time minutes later, even if you're there, they will respawn. You go into your house to rest? Come out, tada!, ambush. Every mission includes taking a 20~ minute hike across the map. Clearing out check point after checkpoint (Stealth system is mostly shit) and then finish your objective, and go back through and re-clear out every checkpoint on the way back. Enemies spot you from half a mile away, and shoot you as well with impeccable aim through the thickest of bush. Every mission is a repeat of its previous self. NOW For the good? Amazing, breathtaking beautiful game. Fun action. Vehicles are great. Fire, lots of fire. Wide arms selection. Music selection is flawless. All in all, if they would have called it anything but FarCry2 there would be a lot less to bitch about. I figure a few patches or mods will eventually make this game truly great.

I didn't play much of the first FarCry anyways. I think I encountered a fatal bug fairly early and never bothered to find a fix for it. All I am looking for is some mindless FPS action. If that's what it provides, I will gladly accept.

Uh, yeah. I'm some ten hours into the game and have not once had to trek 20 minutes across the map for a mission. Five minutes perhaps.

You know, whenever I don't think my computer is fast enough, I rub cheetah blood on it. That usually does the trick.

Every single checkpoint you need to slow down, figure a way through (often ends in fighting if you wish to keep using a vehicle) and kill pretty much everything. Otherwise you'll be dead before you get past the checkpoint. To get from point A to B in many quests (long travels, keeps total game hours up higher, good for "Long Play Time" crap) it is just not possible in 5 min. But this is on the 2nd hardest difficulty mode. Its still a decent game tho, but Fallout 3 has def taken full control of my PC at this point.

If this is a true sequel to FarCry's gameplay (which was truly amazing), then there should be some sweet opportunities to snipe. The sniping was easily the best part in the original FarCry, as well as the open-endedness.
Halx, I truly recommend you get your hands on a copy of the first game. I've done the same missions 6 times with completely different strategies, weapons, techniques, and routes. You can go commando, with a P90, a M16 (or M4, whichever it was), or you can circle around the village, climb up a steep hill, lie prone on a rock and carefully snipe, and prepare your path from there. That's the essence of the game: you can take vehicles, or walk through the thick jungle, or swim around, or boat around, through entirely different rivers; you're never stuck anywhere. I could've done without the retarded trigens(mutated monsters) but it's quite a challenge either way. Far Cry is a must play, and as soon as I can afford a gaming PC or a console I'm getting Far Cry 2.

I watched the trailers for Far Cry 2 although it wasn't easy. My PC's are so out dated that the video would load for 15 seconds and play for two seconds, load for 15 seconds and play for two seconds...on and on and on. I have DSL that is fairly fast and will play most videos without pause but I guess the high end graphics on the trailer was too much?
Anyway, the visuals of this game are cool. I'd like to play a demo of it on my PS3 when its available. I never played the first Far Cry, though. |
