On the harder modes, you cannot just drive through the map.
Every single checkpoint you need to slow down, figure a way through (often ends in fighting if you wish to keep using a vehicle) and kill pretty much everything.
Otherwise you'll be dead before you get past the checkpoint.
To get from point A to B in many quests (long travels, keeps total game hours up higher, good for "Long Play Time" crap) it is just not possible in 5 min. But this is on the 2nd hardest difficulty mode.
Its still a decent game tho, but Fallout 3 has def taken full control of my PC at this point.
