I know both of these games are very good games but i'm not at luxury to get both games. For those of you that own both or have played both a lot which of these games is more fun and has a longer replay value?

Also which game will children/wives have more fun playing?

I've not played Mario Kart yet, but it does look like a lot of fun. I think Mario Kart is probably a more family oriented game as it has little to no violence and is still fun and competitive. And, to the general public, Mario Kart would probably have a higher replay value. (I'm a huge Smash fan, so this does not apply to me).

Mario Kart just got hammered by the EGM I got in today (gave it a C average). They said it caters <I>exclusively</I> to the casual crowd. Smash Brothers is pretty skill oriented so I would probably go with Kart.

Yes and no. I haven't played the previous iterations extensively, but MK:Wii is definitely casual due to the item system. Misjudge a turn and end up in the water? Don't worry, the game will hand you a Bullet Bill or a Star or a Lightning to help you catch up. Are you doing particularly well this race? You'll get hammered with Blue Shells, POW Blocks and Lightnings -- the negative effects of which seem to last longer depending on how close to the lead you are.

That said, Mario Kart is a great party game because of those features. Even people who aren't too good can pick it up and still have fun. And the retro stages are a lot of fun.
In this situation, yes. I will say that a lot of the new items make the outcome based more on luck than skill (smash balls, I'm looking at you).

Mario Kart Wii is an easier game for a casual gamer to pick up--just the other night I had some company over, and my friend's girlfriend had never played Mario Kart of any kind before, but she was able to figure it out quickly. Brawl is harder--as the gentlemen here have said, it's more skill-oriented. Mario Kart is all about the luck of the draw.

I enjoy Kart more than Brawl. I'm actually disappointed with Brawl. It's not very fun.

Brawl doesn't necessarily require more skill. I've beaten my friends many times by mashing buttons. It does require more skill in terms of combos and special moves, though.

I hadn't played a Smash Brothers game until I picked up Brawl because of all of the internet hype, but I wasn't too fond of it either. Too much button-mashing and wasting time trying to unlock characters. Although Solid Snake is really fun to use, I prefer my fighting games to be 2-D and more dependant on skill than opportiunism.

I haven't tried Kart yet since I don't care for racing games, but I've heard a lot of gripes about races being won or lost by sheer luck, that would probably even the playing field for kids and girlfriends while still being fun for you.

I find Smash Bros fun for about... oh.. 15 min tops.

After that its just another smash and button masher like many other Arcade style fighters.

(Yes you can be very skilled at it, but lets face it, you can still win by just randomly hitting shit.)

Mario Kart on the other hand is far more fun for me, and you can play it for hours. With or without others.

Its all to the player though.

I own Smash Bros. but I've yet to get into it, really. My problem is that locally, I don't have many players to go up against. The other problem is that my wireless router is too weak to maintain a steady connection to the Wii. I'm planning on getting an AirPort Extreme soon, so we'll see.

As far as Kart is concerned, I think we'll get this eventually. This is more Baraka_Gurl's speed, and I think I'll have a lot of fun playing against her. I moderately enjoyed one of the earlier (the earliest) Mario Karts. It's all about multiplayer when it comes to these games.

I'd like to see anyone who randomly mashes buttons beat anyone who is actually skilled. (By skilled, I mean someone who plays on at least my level of play.)

And, I tried Kart. I like it, but there is a lot of luck involved if you play single player 150cc. I went from first place to last place on the last lap because I just got hit by everything and essentially stopped moving for 3 minutes.

If smash balls are turned on, you may see that since a majority of them require little more than one button press for an instant kill.
God, yes, it makes it difficult to unlock things... and I swear that the computers actively cheat in Mirror mode.

I hate the mario kart unlocks. I still have all the 1 star rankings and mirror mode unlocks to do. I also have to unlock 20 more expert staff ghosts..... sigh!

yeah all major events and tournaments play without items, anyway I would say that the choice depends on how many people are playing, ALL of the Smash Bros. series revolves around bigger battles, the game is less fun when its solo. If you have a group of 4or 5 then Brawl is great choice lots of fund and randomness. but for fewer like two people I would say Mario kart is better.
If you really want replay value I would say go with Mario kart

I'd be repeating most what everyone else said if I gave a full commentary.

Two points..
1) young kids - go mario kart; older kids; go brawl maybe; just you - do you like the button mashing madness or the infuriating kart mania more?

2) if cost is a factor to you, think about your purchases first. If you want to play with the cool little wheels for MK, then they are $15 a piece extra.If you want all your friends to be able to play.. that's an extra $45 added to the $50 game. I dropped $104 after tax for my MK because I bought 3 extra wheels (1 is in the box). Compared to brawl, that's almost double the cost.

You don't need the wheels to play. You can use the controller with a nunchuck or just plug in a GameCube controller. We have the wheel because it came with the game, but I'm the only person in my house out of three people that ever uses it--the boys prefer the controller/nunchuck combo.

I actually bought 3 wheels after thanksgiving in anticipation for this game. They were 2 bucks a piece so I didn't think I could go wrong

You're absolutely correct. Of course, I'm arguing that skill will beat button mashing in any game 9 times out of 10. Here are some skilled people in different games that will help me prove my point.

I'm only really knowledgeable in the Smash and Tekken series, but it seems like none of these people can be beaten by button mashers. I don't feel like looking through anymore youtube crap for other games.

My favorite is VF5 - button bashers are as easy as waiting for an opening between attacks, and then you can punish badly! Online is a godsend haha.
