I did a search for adventure games and didn't see anything so I hope I'm safe in posting this.

I just recently got into adventure gaming. The last adventure game I played was The Longest Journey and I loved it! I'm an avid reader so the storyline to a game is very important to me. Longest Journey fit the bill and then some. Right now I'm playing Syberia and it's pretty good too, though maybe not as good. I also have tried playing Grim Fandango but some of the puzzles were so illogical that it really pissed me off and I had to take a break. Though I must say that I really did like the humor in that game. I'm going to be running out of adventure games to play soon and was hoping for some recommendations. Also, the recommendations don't have to be strictly adventure. I also liked Resident Evil and Baldur's Gate. The main criteria is that they have to have an interesting story line and not have completely illogical solutions to puzzles.

Eternal Darkness has a fun storyline, but it's easy to beat.
ICO is incredible, but short.

You really should get some old school Sierra stuff, like Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.

Find an old Lucasarts pack, either online or off. Some of the best games ever in there: Day of the Tenacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, The Dig...

Depending on the speed of your computer, you could try The Eldar scrolls Oblivion, or it's predecessor, Morrowind. There's not necessarily a lot of humor in there, but these are games you can play for ages.

If you're pc is up to it, I can also recommend Vampire the masquerade: bloodlines, if you can put up with not-so-perfect video speed and the occasional hiccup. If you play as a Malkavian ("crazy") vampire, you'll have some of the funniest dialogue options in gaming history... It also has a very good story line.

If you mean adventure as in puzzles, you could try the Myst series, the worlds there are full of puzzles and there's lots to see as well

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions thus far. Some really good ones that have been made which I can feasibly check out (I have access to or can buy them) are: Eternal Darkness, Morrowind, Monkey Island series and Vampire the Masquerade. To clarify, puzzles are not really what makes the game interesting to me. A decent plot, writing and voice acting are what I care about. Having some puzzles thrown in is fun but does not need to be the focus. Having a few fight scenes is alright with me too. For example, another game I really liked was Undying. While it was not really classified as adventure it did have some elements of the adventure genre. It was an FPS but it had an interesting story and decent voice acting. I tried playing Myst several years ago but it left me feeling cold. But that was several years ago so maybe I should try again.

Anyways, keep the suggestions coming. Thanks again to everyone who participated.

Yeah, probably due to the lack of human interaction in the first few in the myst series, they get better as you go

You should definitely go old school, Simon The Sorceror 1/2, Sam & Max Hit The Road, Day Of The Tentacle.
Good old fashioned point-and-click fun!

for adventure go for the monkey island series and other older lucasarts games like loom/sam&max/day of the tenticle, beneath a steel sky(any game that runs on scumm system)
for rpg/adv go for planescape torment/neverwinter nights
for rpg/fps, nothing beats deus ex 1(not 2) followed by system shock2 and nolf series

go REALLY old school for the good stuff.

Space Quest 1 for a humorous one.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Zork (the original), Wishbringer, Planetfall, and A Mind Forever Voyaging for oldest-school text adventures that were really good. All were made by Infocom, and you can play them online for free if you look hard enough.

Siera has some great ones... Gabe Knight is my favorite one. Then there is Police Quest and Space quest... all solid

grim fandango is the best imo

i could not play the longest journey, there was like no game play whatsoever, it was just walking around and listening to people talk, does it pick up at some point?

You're right. Most of The Longest Journey is like that. No, it doesn't really change. There is a fight scene at one point but you can't lose really. For me that wasn't a problem because the story line remained interesting to me throughout the game. Though I can certainly understand why you liked Grim Fandango better since it has much more comedy. Perhaps Longest Journey is more of a "chick game".

Anyways, thanks again everyone. These suggestions are really awesome! I've been meaning to try those Gabriel Knight games as I've heard so much about them. Where to find them though..... I wish I had gotten into gaming much earlier. Especially as this genre is nearly dead.

Just wanted to mention that I also played this other game Sanitarium. That was pretty cool and inventive. Almost too short though. I finished it in one weekend.

On my old Mac computer I had a bundle of demos, and Full throttle and the dig both intrigued me a lot. They were really cool. Do you any ideas on how I might find these games for my machine (running XP)? Is there an emulator? Does any site offer these classics?

I just ordered Shadow of the Collosus after seeing many positive reviews, screens, and trailers.. Definitely a neat concept, and the palette of colors (large use of grays) seems to set a mood for a game that I would love to play.
Zelda: The ocarina of time, on N64 was a great game. but I'm not sure that you're looking for this kind of game.

I'd love to see an adaptation of Samurai Champloo for video games. It'd be great to travel through feudal japan, and challenge gangs and samurais, choosing to be either Mugen or Jin.

The Lucas Arts game require http://www.scummvm.org which is free and runs on windows xp and nearly every other Operating system.

They even have a legal, free version of beneath a steel sky available to download

For other older games, you need a DOS emulator, a widely recommended one is dosbox, which is free and open source ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ )

I just finished this game last week. It had an excellent beginning, but I felt the ending was a bit underwhelming.
Anyways, it still a good game, but very short (took only about 12 hours to beat).
