Ladies and Gentlemen...

This week as I toured my city doing my Christmas shopping and watching TV I have not heard a single Merry Christmas! I have heard Happy Holidays, Happy Christmas, Happy Channuka, Happy Kwanza and even a few Happy New Years...

I tell you my friends, there is a war on Merry.

I haven't seen or heard the word in days.

When I called out a cheerful, Merry Christmas to the cashier at Old Navy, I swear she gave me a double take and murmered a "many happy returns to you, sir". What an odd thing for her to say. Either she was wishing me pleasure in returning my gifts post-Christmas OR she was afraid to say Merry Christmas because her managment would come down on her...

As I was walking down the street, I can't be sure but the carolers I passed were singing God Rest Ye Pleasant Gentlemen... by the time I realized what I was I'd heard and went back to make sure they'd switched to Good King Wenceslas.


I have tried to come up for a reason that Merry is being banished from Christmas and all I can come up with is a website that seems to have a thing against certain hobbits.




Ladies and Gentlemen... this is a time to Eat, Drink and be Merry. Don't settle for Joyful... Happy... Overtly Pleased.

You have earned your right to be MERRY damn it and don't let any politically correct, hobbit hating, person tell you otherwise.

She left the night before
Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies, and make them
Realize their urgent cry for sight no more

You are right to remind us ratbastid...

At this time of year is it VERY important to remember MERRY... after all that is what this time of year is all about... being MERRY.

But we should also remember that there are those who chose different modifiers... in the UK they just don't know the joys of MERRY. They are very much on the Happy Christmas side of things.

I dusted off my copy of the US constitution and found this:

We must remember that during this time when we are all trying to be Merry that we should also respect the wishes of the heathens that would be Happy or even Very Happy.

We must learn to tolerate the differences. The best way to celebrate the season is to be as MERRY as possible and let them see what they are missing.

I think it's more the Christmas part that I find missing... not the merry as much.

Yesterday I heard someone on the radio say "let's not forget the REAL reason for the season... Love." What the fudge???? Love?

I've heard "best of the season" "warmest wishes" "happy and healthy holiday season" and all that b.s. but a ridiculous lack of Christ, Jesus, Nativity, Bethlehem, and all that...you know... the real reason for the season....

How odd I just noticed that now as I'm thinking about it. I hear 'Happy Holidays' fairly often, but not so much Merry CHRISTmas or anything that reveals a cultural preference. Maybe everyone is turning too PC these days or worried about offending people so the tact is almost unconsciously done.

I work in customer service and I haven't been too careful spreading my 'Merry christmases' around. Maybe I should be saying Happy Holidays instead?
