UBC vs Simon Fraser

Alright so I am 18, and will be graduating highschool this spring. I am from the praries, but the one thing I know forsure is that I want to move out west, and get my post secondary education in the Vancouver area. My one concern is which school to choose. Someone from Vancouver please help me out, maybe give some pros and cons. I will probably study Business, or Poli Science, so nothing that each university doesn't offer.

I attended UBC for two years before financial realities forced me to finish my degree back here on the prairies. I found UBC to be worth the money, most definitely, and would have finished my degree there had it been an option for me. The library is certainly one of the best in Canada (last time I checked McClean's ratings it was second only to U of T in annual acquisitions and total holdings, something I doubt would have changed). The professors were for the most part good teachers, with notable exceptions found in the Maths and Chemistry (when will academia come to realize that a brilliant mind is no guarentee of an ability to teach others?). I found the student body to be diverse and varied, and met many people from abroad. From the few locals I met while there I got the impression that SFU was more the school of choice for BC residents while UBC was more of an international choice, something due perhaps to the fact that SFU required lower marks for admission (I'm generalizing here). They also offered a 1.5 credit course called "College Basketball: Theory and Application" which basicly taught me how to bet on NCAA Basketball.. yeah, it was a good filler.

I had one friend who attended SFU for Anthropology (apparently the program there is more respected than UBC's), and she enjoyed it, but my reccomendation would still be UBC, if only for the library services..

One negative to consider, however, would be the higher housing costs if you want to live anywhere close to UBC (say, less than a 45 minute express bus ride every day), as the closer you get the more rent you'll pay, where-as you can find relatively affordable housing in Burnaby/East Van with a shorter commute to SFU (say 15-30 min express bus).

Either way, good luck in your studies..

Thanks alot hiro-acid for your advice. Did you find UBC an easy place to fit in and make friends? Were extra-curricular activities good? Btw where are you attending now?

Well, I'm a few years out of date but here are my impressions. UBC is better for giving well rounded degrees. SFU is better for giving practical knowledge. If I had the smarts and the money and wanted to make contacts and get a degree to put me on the path to management, I'd head for UBC. If I had less money, (or to some extent, less smarts) or if I wanted to learn something to get me in to a type of career where I can make good money without climbing the ladder, I 'd go to SFU.

I'm not sure if I communicated my meaning. Does that make sense?

Depending on what your goals are, you also might consider looking in to which companies recruit from which campuses.

Having said all that let me throw in my personal advice from my years of carreerdom. Pick a specific discipline and go get good marks. Obvious, yes but easy, no. Most employers don't really care where you got your degree but many will look at your marks. So check out the campuses, and decide which will be most conducive to your success - whether that is housing, transportation, facilities, finances, etc.

Good luck.

Current UBC student here..first year.

Anywho, I would definitely go to UBC if you have the marks.

1. International recognition (let's be honest, the name matters)
2. Equal or slightly cheaper tuition.
3. Not up a freaking mountain lol.
4. UBC is just a generally larger school. More activities, clubs, infrastructure, activities, resources, class choices etc.
5. I have heard SFU has a very good law/criminology program if you're interested in that.

I go to SFU for a few reasons:

Didn't get into UBC
I want to play for a decent football team
I'm taking Criminology
The tuition is actually cheaper

You're gonna want to head to UBC if you want any kind of social life... SFU is boring

Ace_O_Spades, how much is your tuition?

I got a friend in SFU paying 48-4900 first year, I'm in at about 4600. Though your faculty and credits probably plays a role in the prices.

Sure, for some jobs and companies, coming from a certain university will got you to the front of the list (like prestigious law firms, or maybe if you're applying for chief of mission of the US consulate ), but for most young people entering the career path who have little work history, employers want to see personality, dedication and an interest in the field. I would hire a 3.8 GPA from a comm college over a 2.8 from a university any day. it shows that you are serious, committed and intelligent.

Having said that, I attended UBC once upon a time too but big campuses have big distractions.

Oh I'm not saying that having a degree from a good school is what will make or break your career...

But hey, it certainly doesn't hurt!

I'm currently in my first year of engineering at UBC and I'd definately reccomend UBC over SFU. I don't know much about SFU, but ive been there a few times and it's not a place i would like to go to school. The campus reminds me of a prison and seems like its continously in the fog because its on the top of a mountain. I really have no idea about the academics there though. I've been pretty happy with UBC so far, but it is definately a big school. This has its advantages and disadvantages.... There are lots of oppertunities as far as classes and activities are concerned, but i know a few people who feel overwhelmed by the size of everything. If you do end up at UBC i would recomend living on campus your first year as that is probably the easiest way to meet lots of people. If you lived off campus you would miss out on of alot of the social aspects of the university. If you have any more UBC questions let me know and i can try and help.

Have you considered UVic? Decently priced, good education, and low grade reqs. I don't remember what the courses offered at UVic are though.

I've been to both campuses and looked at both myself for post-bacc work. I like both. My advice--the same advice I give to anyone applying for university--visit! Visit both campuses if possible and decide which feels more comfortable to you. Pick the one that feels most like "home." You will perform better at a school you enjoy being at! Degrees and classes are all fine and dandy, but if you're miserable socially and you hate the campus and the people on it, you won't do well. So get out to Vancouver and see both for yourself. The results will be worth the trip.
