Sure, for some jobs and companies, coming from a certain university will got you to the front of the list (like prestigious law firms, or maybe if you're applying for chief of mission of the US consulate ), but for most young people entering the career path who have little work history, employers want to see personality, dedication and an interest in the field. I would hire a 3.8 GPA from a comm college over a 2.8 from a university any day. it shows that you are serious, committed and intelligent.

Having said that, I attended UBC once upon a time too but big campuses have big distractions.
