A dissenting voice, but I think some of the best Canadian music ever hasn't been made by bands, but individual composers - ie: Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) - one of the defining pioneers of the mislabeled "detroit techno" [should be windsor techno, but y'know how those Americans like to hog the glory] (see Hawtin's Label, Plus8 Records]), or, say, Oscar Peterson, Joni Mitchell, or Neil Young.

But if I had to pick a "band" (how mainstream of me), I'ld go with The Hip or DOA, assuming we're using the same criteria as CBC's "Greatest Canadian" contest..

Devin

Edit: I'm surprised no one mentioned Jeff Healey.. that blind boy plays a mean guitar.

Canadian bands rock... The Hip, OLP, Big Sugar, Matt Good... just to name a few. We can really pump them out!

The Trews have a couple cool songs. :) But MGB (matthew good band) is awesome stuff!
Great Big Sea has some cool tunes too, and Sum 41 is cool too. :)

Steppenwolf isnt really canadian. A German immigrant that came here only cause the US wouldnt let him in, along with a bunch of americans. And Bob Dylan isnt canadian either. My best would be Triumph and Tragically hip.

CYMK 02-27-2005 05:29 PM

Im going to have to say Alexisonfire and OLP

neddy65 03-12-2005 05:11 PM

Blue Rodeo is playing in my mind a lot lately......not sure why but it makes me happy.
also glad I wasn't the only one to recognize the joy of a Doug And The Slugs experience. I saw them live several times in small venues and had some of the best times ever.

jhkayakr 03-12-2005 05:24 PM

I would have to say RUSH also.

matthew330 03-15-2005 11:05 AM

A long ago favorite of mine, King Apparatus.

muttonglutton 03-15-2005 08:38 PM

Oh, the list goes on for me...

Finger Eleven
Metric
Barenaked Ladies
The Tragically Hip
Sloan
A whole lot more, I'm sure...

Ooh, I really liked Alanis back in the day, what with her small, serrated antibiotics.

Lucifer 03-16-2005 12:25 PM

RUSH, Blue Rodeo, Spoons, Kim Mitchell, BTO, The Hip, and a new band out of Winnipeg I heard the other day, "The Duhks", kind of a celtic-folk-fusion thing. Give it a listen...

currently i work with a guy who's band toured with 54*40, and Doug and the Slugs. His band was called Sons*of* Freedom from Vancouver. Now he's a programmer.
