Best Candian band?
I have alot of favourites when it comes to Canada and music. I know I'm always pulling for The Hip and Barenaked Ladies. What about you? Which bands in Canada turn your crank?
|
The Hip are the best band in Canada in my opinion.
Neil Young, The Tea Party, Big Sugar (no split), The Watchmen (also split) are all great as well. I'm sure I'm forgeting a few. |
I loved the Headstones, before they broke up last year :(
You can't have a great CDN band list without: RUSH |
blue rodeo :)
|
Rush! Best. Canadian. Band. Ever.
|
Quote:
Here's my list... Headstones (didn't know they broke up, suckage) Barenaked ladies The Tragically Hip Default The Tea Party And damnit, I like Nickleback :p I'm sure I'm missing a few... Must go home and listen to my Canadian music :) |
damn.. forgot about blue rodeo.
Rush are alright. Never really got into em' though. And the Headstones were a great band as well. Nickleback and Default though get the thumbs down from me. Sorry Averett, but it's true. An up and comer for this thread could be The Spades. They sound pretty rockin from what I've heard. I think thier cd comes out soon. Oh and I forgot all about Sam Roberts. Definitly has to be included here. |
Biff Naked without a doubt but I really dun know much bout music so tis without a doubt for me only
|
sounds like an oxymoron to me... best canadian band...
I kid, I kid. I would have to say Rush. |
Blue Rodeo
And I hate Rush... |
The only Canadian band I even remotely like is the Barenaked Ladies... and Rush
I wish a plane carrying the Tragically Hip, Nickleback, and Default would crash into the tour bus of Nelly Furtado and that dumbass white rapper guy. |

|
I'm gonna have to chime in with the Hip as well, they are the quintessential Canadian band. Barenaked Ladies come close in second though.
And no one likes Shania Twain? @@ |
1) Broken Social Scene
2) Metric 3) The Stills Seriously folks, Canadian music goes beyond The Hip and The Barenaked Ladies. |
What no one mentioned Finger Eleven or Mudmen?!
Can't leave them out. |
Quote:
The Hip in the same plane as Nicklefault?!? You obviously just don't get it. How can you lump the Hip in with these others? Obviously Gord and the boys have more class than to fly around with trash like Kroger, it could never happen. ;) |
What no Anne Murray or Alanis? Naw I gotta go with the Hip. Utronki Road is pretty good.
The Barenaked Ladies annoy me, the Headstones Hugh Dillon is the Canadian version of Scott Weiland in rehab, out, back in again....., Sam Roberts, I played hockey with the drummer and went to school with guitar player, hate the band they are so bad and Sam Roberts needs to wash sometimes he looks like a homeless person. |
Quote:
Has anyone ever heard of Nathan Wiley, from PEI? |
Oh ya, add Hawksley Workman and Sloan to the group. Also, Moist, The Odds and I mother Earth all had some good tunes in thier day.
|
Quote:
I also add a vote for BNL. I'm going to see them in two weeks with Alanis Morrisette. I'll add to the list, Triumph, April Wine and Loverboy (I'm old, shut up :p ) |
Quote:
And just to get under some of your skins, the only act worse than the Hip is Ryan Malcolm, the Canadian Idol. Baaaaaaaaahhhh.. I think I'm the only person in the world (Canada) to walk out on those hacks when they played under an assumed name at A.J's Hangar in Kingston. Just fucking dreadful. I'm done now.;) |
Oh, didn't know Finger Eleven and Moist were Canadian. And forgot about I Mother Earth.
Shoulda known those were all Canadian... My friend all sent em to me, and all he sends me are Canadian bands  |
BNL, Blue Rodeo and Sloan all rock my socks
|
I can't believe no one's named "Great Big Sea" fantastic high-energy band out of Newfoundland....
And of course...Bif Naked, BNL, Lorenna Mckennit (but that's a whole other type of music!) |
Forgot about Lowest of the Low too. New album coming out real soon.
|
Another vote for Great Big Sea!
|
Sloan, Hayden and Rush for me.
|
oh and the be good tanyas!
|
whoops,...
|
The early our lady peace stuff was pretty good. I'm surprised they haven't been mentioned yet (for the good or the bad).
|
How about the Trews?
and Neil young of course |
Great Big Sea, Spirit of the West, Bare Naked Ladies, The Hip..
anyone mention Snow yet? ;) |
Neil Young, The Band (ehh...most people probably don't know them but they used to travel with Bob Dylan), Barenaked ladies
|
I read through this thread again and realize how much I hate almost every single band or individual thats been listed
I guess when you don't like alternative rock, indy, emo, pop, and country... you're kinda SOL when it comes to canadian music |
Quote:
|
Classic Rock, Heavy Metal mostly
It's not like there aren't good canadian bands in those genres, I was simply stating about the groups which have been listed here, besides the ones I already said I didn't mind in my earlier post |
Stabilo is my favorite canadian band right now. My good friends brothers is the manager, so I got hooked through him.
|
Saw Danko Jones in a small club and they blew the roof of the place. Solid band.
Forgot Max Webster too. |
Quote:
|
I really like a lot of canadian bands. But my absolute favorite would have to be...
Matthew Good Always loved MGB. Great tunes... |
matthew good
/end thread |
How about The Guess Who or maybe Bachman Turner Overdrive.
|
Definetly gotta say Danko Jones is my favorite.
but sloan, and the hip are pretty damn good to... anybody for some paul anka? |
Well, Sloan's been mentioned, so I'll go with Thrush Hermit, and, after they broke up, Joel Plaskett Emergency. I'm also a fan of The Weakerthans. Hmm, who else...well I've heard some very good things about Wintersleeps, although I'm not terribly familiar with them myself. What little I have heard by them, however, has been quite excellent.
|
without a doubt, I would say Voivod
kim mitchell and rush are good too |
YAY bookerv and fuelmyfire
matthew good rocks - theres a guy who is not afraid to speak his mind despite the fact that he might alienate others. I respect that. Will also add Hawksley Workman and blue rodeo to my list |
I like the Hip but I just havent been diggin their new stuff nearly as much as the classics.
Love barenakedladies and great big sea |
Best Band;
English; Rush & The Tragically Hip French; Harmonium & Beau Dommage I had to put a french flavor into it!! :) |
I still respect the Hip, but not as much as in my Uni. days.
Still enjoy listening to The Watchmen, they're a small Winnipeg band that had some success, dunno if they've done anything lately, I haven't been in Winnipeg in years :) |
He has already been mentioned, but I can't mention Hawksley Workman enough. That guy oozes talent, and is a really really great guy.
|
GrimSkunk from Quebec, and The Smalls from Alberta
|
Holy crap... the Smalls? Haven't heard that name in a while. I went to school with some of the former Smalls.
I'll echo those who said: Matthew Good (Band) Hawksely Workman The Watchmen Be Good Tanyas (you rock, brianna) Thrush Hermit / Joel Plaskett Emergency and add: Spririt of the West King Apparatus Uisce Beathe Treble Charger SNFU (anyone remember those guys?) age of electric / Limblifter / AlarmBell / Static in Stereo (those guys have to just give it up and get back together) Holly McNarland Martina Sorbara Wow, apparently a lot of my musical faves lean toward the defunct side. Bleh. |
tricky woo
|
They have some amazing guitar work...awesome band!
My vote goes out to either Rush or Triumph Quote:
|
Rheostatics, DOA, furnaceface, black boot trio, the gruesomes, Skinny Puppy, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Crash Vegas, Jellyfishbabies, The Pukka Orchestra, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Shuffle Demons...
Artists such as Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, etc. don't count on this list as they are solo artists and not bands... |
Nice... Forgot to mention the Smalls and Crash Vegas.
Good stuff  |
RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH!
RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! RUSH! One word: Loverboy
|
Ya Matthew Good, The Trews, Sloan, Moist/David Usher. Its suprising to know how many good underground/Indy groups out there as well.
The Watchmen are still my CDN faves  |
Gob
Avril Lavigne The Reason (formerly Sewing with nancie) Simple Plan and so on (not that I like these bands) edit I forgot A.M.P. |
How is there any question that this is Rush? Easily, obviously and unassailably the best band in the Great White North.
Is it because Geddy Lee sounds like Terry Jones in Drag? Everything else about the band is so awesome, I think it's pretty much mandatory to forgive them Geddy's voice (and their deploarable tendency to didacticism in their lyrics.) |
[QUOTE=Averett]And damnit, I like Nickleback :p [QUOTE]
I used to like Nickleback, but every song they do is exactly the same and it got pretty old for me pretty quick. |
Rush is the best CND band period.
|
Quote:
(even if you have some valid point) Geddy Lee has one of the best Rock voice ever, get an album like 2112, his voice turns my soul upsidedown when i hear it, take a closer look at Hemispheres ... |
Nobody mentioned Doug and the Slugs yet?
|
As I was reading this thread "Platinum Blonde - Cryin' Over You" came on in my mp3 rotation.
I'm not saying they were great or anything, but OK. :) |
I've always liked Matthew Good/ Band and the Hip and the Headstones.
For some lesser known people, The Real McKenzies for some Scottish Punk/Rock I like Sam Roberts, his musics just pleasing, and Lythic Blue, are a local alt-rock band in Victoria that has some major talent. I also like smaller alt and ska bands in the Victoria scene. |
are we talking about bands that are still around? if not, the guess who and who can forget trooper raise a little hell.
|
Yeah, BTO turned my crank, you could say that they... took care of business. Oh, I kill myself
|
bob and doug mackenzie
|
Rush, I have to say Rush. The Guess Who and BTO also.
|
Quote:
I think that Canadian rock is kind of the renaissance of music nowadays. I love the old metal, but I sure got tired of the whole hip hop style, and love the Hip, and especially Sam Roberts, man do i love his band. I liked the old stuff too like Prism, Toto, Rush, godo, and Teenage Head, Viletones, Diodes, GOB, DOA. I also like Neil Young and the Band. I am learing the guitar, and love the string work. Eeven though i don;t like Nickelback too much, I love the guitar work in Figured You Out. I don't like Furtado, or Alanis, or Celine. |
Five Blank Pages

Quote:
Good call man! I was about to say the same exact thing, maybe add a few more bands like Godspeed! You black Emperor, and Eric's Trip. |
Chalk up another vote for the Hip... but also honourable mention to the Rheostatics (How can you not love a band that wrote a song about Wendel Clark), and Spirit of the West (I know a good/ugly drunk is coming on when Home for a Rest gets played early on)
|
Quote:
Yes Eric's Trip!! I love the song Girlfriend... |
Alexisonfire
|
I don't like any Canadian bands because I don't know of any hard rock or metal bands. The only band I remotely like is Sum 41.
|
Quote:
so... is it Alexis on fire or Alex is on fire?? |
Quote:
-dichotic - 3rd Degree - Puddy go to this forum: http://canadianmetal.com/forum/index.php some of their top five are: 1. Kataklysm 2. Infernal Majesty 3. Woods of Ypres 4. Cephalectomy 5. Torn Within |

|
Rush, can't have a list without them at the top.
There are lots of great band that are no longer around. ChalkCircle, NorthernPikes, Truimph to name a few. Solid music. None of this techno-dance-house crap. |
Quote:
- For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall, Concert hall And echoes with the sounds of salesmen. (Rush) |
Quote:
Thanks a LOT. Gonna check them out ASAP. |
STEPPENWOLF!
|
Quote:
Born to be Wild! ( wish they would play some other songs besides that, on the radio) what about the Diodes? I know one hit wonders, but still fun. And DOA with their cover of Takin Care of Business? I love Doug and the Slugs too, and Hot Hot Heat. |
oh, and Harlequin.
|
Quote:
I support every Canadian band out there, with the single glaring exception of... Simple Plan. If I could, I would slap their singer in the face and tell him to man up then set their instruments on fire and steal their money. Favourite Canadian bands/artists (I'll probably forget a couple): Swollen Members, Default, The Guess Who, K-OS, Rascalz, Kardinal, Maestro Fresh Wes, Finger 11, and Sum 41. edit: Oh, if Steppenwolf is/was Canadian, add them to my list too. |
steppenwolf is/was most definitely canadian.
I also liked the following from the canadian artist commemorative cd: April Wine, Chilliwack (nothing like sugary rock ballads!) A Foot In Cold Water, Crowbar and 2 hit wonders: Pukka Orchestra (might as well be on mars), Boys Brigade (Melody) And several hit wonders: The Spoons (Nova Heart, romantic traffic) |
There's JoyDrop...not really my cup of tea but my friend used to be their promoter. A great band to party with!!!
|
Matthew Good,
Moist (did they officially break up? I heard an album was to be made) Tea Party, But I think I have to go with: Pulse Ultra |
Quote:
also going a little more recent, Kid Koala kicks a lot of ass! |
Nice to see someone finally mentioned Godspeed You Black Emperor! Props go to those pointing out Broken Social Scene too. I guess there aren't many post-rock fans on this board :(
|
RUSH ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Quote:
What's Post Rock? I thought that defined Hip Hop, or in an earlier era, Disco. What is it now? |
Id say that The Get Down is the best canadian band... hands down
check em out at www.thegetdownrock.com they have some sound samples on there web page, and if anyone likes em i can send you some full mp3's through msn my msn is thee_gate_keeper@hotmail.com |
Quote:
And don't forget Streetheart, a damn good band in its own right that later evolved into Loverboy. And what about BTO? Those guys put Canadian hard rock on the map in the '70s. Best Canadian band not to receive more recognition? 54*40. |
Quote:
And I'd add The Guess Who. Burton Cummings has one of the purest voices in rock and roll. (The Headpins were a helluva band, too. The lead singer, Darby Mills, had leather lungs. Loud.) |
I LOVE 54'40! everything they did. I think that they are still active, didn't they have a hit about 2 yrs ago?
And what about Teenage Head? They have a new cd out... There's also a great band out of Hamilton: Blackie & the Rodeo Kings (I've had enough of You ) and his earlier band that did 'Shine'. |
Quote:
I second Burton Cummings! Manitoba all the way! |
